  1. Wow, that Russia was amazing. I shall be backing them for the title Another good one coming up tonight, down with Italy!
  2. If it's the fourth century, the source is most likely the Regionaries. A source to be used with some caution. I'm a bit baffled by that map with the shaded 'open land' areas in second century Rome. Obviously it's not 'open' land but rather public buildings and imperial properties, but still it seems to be riddled with errors. Not trying to bash your article, mind you, kudos for putting it up.
  3. Rejoice, for the heathen Portuguese have been eliminated
  4. My Latin is very rusty, but it would be something like "reason illuminates the symbols of nature". Iirc it is a masonic phrase, and in that case I'm sure it's not a coincidence the words form the acronym INRI.
  5. It wasn't necessary. I guess some governments figured it would be a nice gesture, only to have it blow up in their face. But the fact remains that the people had little or no idea what they were voting on, and voted out of a general dissatisfaction and hesitation regarding the EU as a whole. A valid concern, but not the issue at hand. I understand your objections, and I share a lot of them, but there will be no going back on this one.
  6. The politicians, who were largely in favour of the treaty, already had the mandate of the people.
  7. I believe in the case of the French and Dutch referenda it turned out less than 1% of the voters read the document they were voting on. As dreadful as it may sound, some decisions are best left to politicians.
  8. Another great win for the Dutch. They should have mercy and let Romania win the last match, thus saving both France and Italy from further embarrassment.
  9. Brilliant win for the Dutch! The first goal was not off-side btw, there was an Italian player lying outside the field behind the goal line.
  10. Oh I remember that. We were driving around Lazio with a poster of the Korean squad on our rear window. It was magnificent.
  11. You know what, we should organize the next unrv-meet at your library instead of some dull Roman place.
  12. Does not look particularly ancient to me. In fact it looks machine-made, but I could well be wrong.
  13. By the way, I think the 'new discovery' mentioned in the article was actually made a few years ago.
  14. Indeed, it was one of the most popular forms of early Christian syncretism. Not to mention a very apt choice for catacomb decorations.
  15. I do know an archaeologist that has a whip, known him all my life in fact. I also want to make it clear that it was a gift
  16. If you'll settle for the first and last of those, you really should consider archaeology
  17. Just pointing out an inaccuracy Actually, I was going to comment on the article, wondering who the authors were trying to 'educate', only in rather more colourful language. Then I thought the better of it.
  18. This is why I don't have a remote. I get annoyed by the time the first commercial starts, and since I have to get up anyway, I might as well switch it off. Problem solved.
  19. too kind, too kind. Thank Vulcan it's over, I was just about to call it a day. It's getting pretty dark outside (you can tell by the laccolith). Last one, I promise.
  20. A degree from the University of Tuff Luck, I'd wager. Recycling puns, who do you take me for, some old geyser? That's too easy, we could continue Etnauseam, but I'll let you dacite. Que Thera, Thera
  21. Beware, you're on shaky ground, or in a hot spot, if you will. I'm outpunning you, and will be without interuption.
  22. Is that a sulphurfilling prophecy? As legata, you can put a lid on it, and more power tuya!
  23. That is indeed a crater worry, and one should take care not be caught dormant.
