  1. I don't really see how a place becomes overrated just because you don't get to touch it or have it to yourself all day. I'm not even talking about the 'too remote/not remote enough/have to pay/can't hold a concert in it' whining. If you want an attraction, go to Disneyland.
  2. It was already off limits when I visited in 2004, but you could still get up to the point where this picture was taken. I'm too busy for the next few days, whoever wishes to can post the next picture.
  3. That looks a bit like the Porta Rosa in Velia but I don't remember the structures in front of it.
  4. Sarmizegetusa? edit: post 1000, that might be a UNRV first.
  5. It's the Council of Europe in this case. I'm not sure if they have enough power to overrule national governments, probably not.
  6. As do I. Might be fun to post some pictures/description, start a small online UNRV member coin catalogue in the new subforum?
  7. It is interesting that the SU adhered to its defense pact with the Czechs until the end, a cunning pact that was only valid if France adhered to it as well. In hindsight, the war could have been won so easily it's almost silly. The Czech and French armies outnumbered the Germans by more than 2:1, and they had numerous promises from Britain and the Soviets that they would side with them if Germany attacked the Czechs. It boggles the mind why Chamberlain was still so intent to sacrifice the Sudetenland and then again the rump Czech state, but I suppose the scars of WWI did run that deep.
  8. That would be the Valletta Treaty, which calls for archaeological research whenever soil-disturbing activities are planned to make sure nothing is lost undocumented. Typically though, the treaty has been implemented unevenly among the signatory states.
  9. Was the UK really capable of starting a new war? I thought they were pretty much exhausted and bankrupt at that point.
  10. Lying in state != burial. There's the source of the confusion. The shrine of Julius I guess would have been the one in the Forum (hence the second oration from the rostra), not Caesar's tomb which iirc was on the Campus Martius. Burial in the forum would be highly unlikely in any case. I dinstictly remember seeing an epitaph bearing Octavia's name in the Mausoleum of Augustus. It was a fake, though, and I'm not aware of an extant original.
  11. Not sure what is meant here (Caesar's tomb?), but Octavia was buried in the Mausoleum of Augustus.
  12. I can't see it, at least not without signing up.
  13. Nice review, I've been tempted to pick this book up before. Is it exclusively centered on the triumph or does it also cover things like the adventus?
  14. Objecting as much as they could, no doubt. UNESCO has no authority to do anything against it. They cannot assign heritage sites as they please, unless the national government asks them to. And even then there is no binding legislation involved: If the Iraqi government later on decides looting is the way forward, all UNESCO can do is de-list the site, nothing more.
  15. Well that would probably have happened regardless, you just gave them a convenient excuse to up the price.
  16. You were cycling? Sounds like an interesting journey. Does Transnistria still require a bribe to get in?
  17. I agree the picture provides insufficient information. While it does look like it might be Roman, given its remote location I'd say it is unlikely. Romans did have a presence here but I doubt the area was ever secure enough to allow the construction of costly infrastructure. I'm not an expert on the region though.
  18. It's a warrior mounting a chariot.
  19. The main panel looks like a generic image of warriors on horseback, not necessarily a scene from mythology. The top bit might be, perhaps a hero leaving for battle?
  20. Same thing happens to me, every single time I travel alone. Once they told me they found a metal object in my bag that looked like it might be (used as) a weapon. It wasn't, but I could understand it might look that way on the scan. But as I was in a foul mood from being searched twice already I thought well it's your job, you go and find it. I was stunned when they gave up after a few cursory glances in the wrong pockets, and discretely left the offending object in the waiting area before boarding, along with a sarcastic note.
  21. I'm completely clueless on this one.
