I heard somewhere that Roman centurions served for life.I was wondering if it was true because I had heard elsewhere that they were allowed to retire. If someone could help me straighten this out I would really appreciate it.

I found venalicius listed in a Latin dictionary. Mercator servorum might work as well, but I am not sure on that. I believe it means trader of slaves. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable than me can help you with this, my Latin is a little rusty.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. I guess I confused what my teacher said with something else.

I remember my Latin teaching commenting about a woman on the cover of our textbook wearing a yellow dress which meant she was probably a prostitute. Is that correct? I'm asking because I think it seems strange that prostitutes would have an assigned color of clothes to wear.

Welcome to the forum! Do you have any particular field of Roman history you like most? If I had to pick a single topic it would be military history, but I enjoy pretty much anything.

Just introducing myself here, looking forward to using this site frequently in the future. Just a little about myself I took three years of Latin in high school and have been hooked on Roman history ever since.
