  1. P. Clodius, I liked what he did and what he stood for. Rock the boat! I'd love to have known what he'd have done had he lived longer and how he'd have reacted to Caesar's bid for power.
  2. C'mon Populares, we can't let the SNOBS win!!!! All those who want free bread arm yourselves with clubs and makesure the "undecided" vote the way you would have them vote!
  3. From my user name you can probably guess what I would be. What about you?
  4. Marius to Sulla after Sulla made and flaunted his ring depicting him, not Marius capturing Jugurtha. "You gonna pull that gladius or whistle the Adeste Plebis"
  5. Clint's movies have some classic lines. I bet the Romans would have loved them. The Senate floor. Caesar, "I want a Gallic command and 50 thousand troops. When I'm done I'll give them back!" Cato, "Don't piss down my back and tell me its raining!"
  6. Don't piss down my back and tell me its raining! You gonna pull them pistols or whistle dixie?
  7. You also need to factor in the Roman 10 month calender, and the changes put in place by the Divine Julius when reading primary sources.
  8. I seemed to remember reading, Tacitus I think where he stated homos were clubbed to death in the legions.
  9. God was an Englishman called Charles Darwin! And JC being Caesar is certainly feasable. What has JC done for me? Not much. What has Caesar done for me? Well, the entire western world is basking in his glow as we speak.
  10. What's your favorite battle to learn about? Certainly Alesia, Pharsalus, and Zama occupy a special place for me but the Metaurus River is an awesome story. How Nero tricked Hannibal into thinking he never left his camp, marched 3-4 days being egged on and supported all the way by the citizens. You can't beat a patriotic cause like that!!
  11. Not sure, you probably just google it or find it on this site
  12. I believe it was voted to them by the Concilium Plebis. Its called a Cognomen
  13. I remember seeing an episode of I Claudius when it was first broadcast backhome in 1976, I was 11 and didn't understand it too much. I came to the US in 91 and when the History Channel first started they had it on and I was hooked to it. But I didn't know if it was true or not so I got the two books and found them even more fascinating, but saw in the intro it wasn't true but it was based on Seutonius, et al. So I read Seutonius, then Tacitus (Annals), and Dio. I knew I was truly hooked when I read Livy's The War with Hannibal. What a story!! Then I just continued to read as much as I could. I have quite an extensive library now, (as I'm sure most of you do), and some books I read over and over. Recently I've gotten into Newsgroups and discovered there is so much more out there, hehehe. But my dream is to write a script, make a documentary and have it shown on PBS.
  14. This is a pretty good overview http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/historic_figu.../claudius.shtml
  15. Yes, in reality his reaign was actually quite bloody. I think 34 Senators bit the dust during his stint
  16. Claudius is a very interesting character. He shelled out LARGE $ to the army and Praetorians upon ascension. I think I read 15,000 cesterces per Praetorian someplace. Which leads to the thought that he was possibly on the fringes of the plot to assassinate Gaius. His reign was not without scandal, his wifes were attrocious, he was said to be dominated by his Freedmen. But he did play an active part in the courts leading some to critisize for micromanagement. Claudius was deified after death so calling into question the people that were around him indirectly critisizes the God. A slant attack.
  17. That's the whole point of the post, read mine I give a brief description of what Marcellus did. I only asked what Laelius did besides command a wing of Scipio's army!
  18. The final victory for Caesar was a tough one against the Republican holdouts in Spain. After it was over Caesar said "I have fought many battles, but this is the first time I fought for my life!" During the battle Caesar's able onetime second in command/turncoat Titus Labienus was finaly killed. The Republican cause was in tatters!!! HAIL CAESAR
  19. It was the Concilium Plebis that proposed and ratified laws. The Senate was little more than an advisary body.
  20. OK he was in charge of Scipio's leftflank. What else did he do?
  21. Yes, Regulus is great. His eye balls were peeled and he was placed into a barrel of spikes and left in the sun to die.
  22. Actually, I think if you asked the average person on the street to name two famous Romans they'd probably say Caesar and Julius. Or possibly Biggus Dickus!!
