  1. The more lictors the better, I'd want 24 ;-)
  2. Senatorial membership shouldn't necessarily have to incude free stuff I don't think, though some of the others may disagree. I think the benefit comes from having to come up with a thesis, then back it up with pros etc...Like a term paper. I for one would welcome the challenge as it would encourage research and broaden the perspective of the consuls and those that chose to respond.
  3. May I suggest a reorganization of heirarchy. Seems that Ursus and Germanicus should be Censors, the admins triumvirs, and the rest of us (those say with 100 posts for example) be made senators. We elect consuls as previously stated but they don't do just book reviews, the subject matter could be anything related to our passion (and no, I'm not talking *or* ;-0). The elected have a month to prepare their indepth thesis then post it for their peers to critique. And I don't mean 1 sentence answers but carefully prepared rebuttles. Thoughts!!!
  4. Elect two consuls monthly from the senate (which I don't think is created). These two consuls would be responsible for researching one aspect/subject indepth and making a post, then having the subject scrutinized by the said members of the senate. Thoughts/additions?
  5. Both Spartan JKM and Germanicus are correct. I am currenty reading Hannibal by Theo Dodge in which he mentions the Extraordinarii quite often. As for spelling I think we should be flexible in light of the many non-native english speakers that visit this site. Unless of course your name is Future Historian, then may I recommend a copy of "Huct on Foniks".
  6. None, the only thing I care about is Rome. Of course we can't exclusively talk about Rome/Romans because of the inclusiveness of roman society and its willingness to adopt ideas etc....But I only care about things roman.
  7. I don't have the channel but I'll get it from the newsgroups when it appears.
  8. Justified!! How can WE judge if it was justified or not? During the early, mid and late republic when was Rome not at war with someone or other? You pick on Caesar, label him a self serving glory seeker, etc... He was a product of the system and was doing what many others had done before him. What were the consequences of his Galic campaign? When Rome and the western empire fell into ruin, France was still a gleaming jewel of romano/galic civilization. Most students of the western world would acknowlege Caesar as the man who transformed Rome from a meditarenean centric, to a euro centric empire. Hail Caesar. ALL HAIL CAESAR!!!
  9. Also, south/central american indians don't/are unable to grow facial hair of the significance of that found on the head.
  10. Given this, governors must have held one of the above powers because they had millitary forces under them. Correct?
  11. PP, correct me if I'm wrong. (Pro)Praetors, (pro)consuls, and dictators were the only one's to have imperium?
  12. Finaly. Hooooraaaayyy!!!! And here I was considering posting a Soviet 3rd Shock Army vs. Regulus thread!!
  13. The murder of Caesar scene was VERY well done. The scene with Servilia, Atia, and Octavian, at the the end Servilia looks at Octavian as if trying to read what was on his mind and received an emotionless return look. The series was awesome, must..live ...til 2007. Great job HBO!!
  14. Ahhh yes, this was the start of my namesakes carrier of agitation. hehehe
  15. Hi Prof, As many of us are aware ancient rome has/continues to influenced the world. i.e. law, architecture, etc... In respect to english common law and the concept of starre decisis. Isn't this the concept of mos maiorum in principle? I always assumed common law to have developed uniquely within the brit isles. But after studying ancient rome it appears that the two concepts are practicaly the same, despite the 800 something years between the departure of rome from Britain and 1215. Your input would be appreciated. Clodius
  16. Past is prologue. In 1942/43 at Stalingrad the german 6th Army was surrounded and crushed by the Soviets using the double envelopment manouver first used by Hannibal. The german commanders name was Von Paulus. Paulus wasn't to blame for Cannae, Varro was. The romans chose to go for depth in formation as opposed to frontage. If they'd have gone for frontage they would have outflanked Hannibal on his right(his left was protected by the Aufidus). Hannibal read the roman tactics right and exploited it to its fullest, hats off to him I guess.
  17. Without a doubt, Augustus. Arguably the greatest politician ever!
  18. For those of you who missed the Spartacan Rebelion, you didn't miss much. Just some chronic poster who had a large male apendage pertruding from the middle of his forehead. And... Christmas=Saturnalia in these parts ;-)
  19. This is indeed true. However, this was not unique to Imperial times. Look at Scipio's spectacular fall from grace.
  20. As promised here is some of Clodius' legislation. Righthand page quarter of the way down. http://www.ancientlibrary.com/smith-dgra/0693.html
  21. You've hit the nail right on the head. They indeed had no staying power. After Clodius' death they went and petitioned Pompei to become sole consul to end the civil strife (which of course led to Caesar being declared an enemy of the state), something that would have made Clodius spin in his grave. Roman poilitics were based on Amici, clientela, and of course enhancing ones dignitas. Hence it tended to be a very personal affair. I will dig through that book at some point to list his legislative accomplishments.
  22. As far as Clodius and his gang...well that is what they were, a gang organized by a politician and not by the people. I don't see what worker's group they could have represented.
  23. To my knowlege collegiality meant political counter parts. i.e. 2 consuls, 4 praetors, etc.... No one position having political monopoly.
  24. I think the way Brutus' character is being portrayed is awesome and is a very powerful performance by the actor. By far the best character acting. I am no fan of the historical Brutus but this portrayal makes me almost sympathize with him.
