  1. I know you're right, mostly, but we've been over this before I think. Modern racial sensibilities didn't apply back then and were irrelevant.
  2. Livia to Claudius' sister, forgot her name, Lucilla?
  3. Everitt makes this very claim in his bio of Augustus, but provides little proof. His theory was that Augustus silently consented to it to provide a smooth transition for Tiberius and prevent a civil war. How did Everitt reach this conclusion? I don't understand the reasoning. Why would civil war be averted by the appearance--but not actuality--of his natural death? Unfortunately, it is exactly as Ursus described. Everitt makes the claim in his preface but never expounds upon the theory at all, nor attempts to prove it in the text of his otherwise well presented bio. Been a while since I read it but its probably from Suetonius.
  4. I'm PP, no I'm PP, I'm PP and so's my wife!
  5. There was also the factor of demobilization/service reward which were, at this stage of the game, tied with the 'success' of the commander. Had Caesar been removed, prosecuted, whatever, the chances of their receiving such was slim due to senate obstinacy. Caesar's consulship included the legislation to award and settle Pompey's veterans. If you were a legionary who had given 10+ years of service who would you hitch your wagon to?
  6. I shall therefore refrain from thread thuggery. Could it be because Caesar promoted on ability rather than social position, was capable of communicating with his soldiers on their level, led by example, shared rather than hoarded, was one of the most successful military leaders of ALL time, etc....?
  7. I daren't, I'd get shouted at! hehehe. That's my gf and I took them and posted them purely from an art perspective, I know they're somewhat suggestive, but I do see them purely from a technical, and artistic angle. I had the 'gall' to suggest taking pictures of women in whatever states of dress or undress the otherday, this of course was firmly vetoed....I tried to explain my artists interest but to little avail...Doh!
  8. At the risk of betraying my age, you need a new needle for your record player as it appears to be sticking. So let me get this straight. The under-represented classes did not benefit from any of the legislation proposed, and passed by whatever means by Caesar?
  9. Well sheeit, I turn my back for 6 months and what do I find, a deluge of Naughty boy Caesar posts. The end of the republic had its roots in the second punic war, rich individuals/conglomerates buying up land because the owners were drafted to fight a mismanaged conflict. The Head Count, (displaced persons) had a votive weight of 1, is this right? Who would speak for these people? Those that attempted tended to die at the hands of the ruling class. As for the "cause" quote, consider its source. While I love Cicero for the unique insight he offers into this most critical of time periods, I cannot take the quote seriously when coming from someone who regarded the people as "scum". The cause was just, the republic was sick (not necessarily beyond repair), the cause required a Caesar to lead it.
  10. Excellent piece of work Thelian, congrats!
  11. Here's stabbing at you! Seriously, happy birthday.
  12. Didn't Augustus nominate two of his daughter's(?) children 'Caesars' and had Tiberius adopt them? Yeah but I think he means actual rulers
  13. Gaius, know to prosperity as Caligula
  14. This is very interesting. I'd like to do one for me and my boy, I like to encourage his mind in scientific wonder....Cash flow is tight right now though due to the recent move etc...Back burner. Edit: My original post sounds somewhat cold and cruel. But of course I was referring to the phonecian practice of child sacrifice not to 18th century views on race. I'm sure most of you got it!
  15. So, if a person wished to claim himself the all powerful messiah and turn donkey piss into vodka, would they be banned?
  16. I too was a little disappointed...There is still hope. Vorenus will be compelled by Antony to return to the colors and Pullo will side with Octavian...I wanted more of Octavian, and agree with MPC his snub of Decimus would have been great, to underline the impending civil war so to speak and to emphasize Octavian's mission to crush the assassins. The were all dead withing 3 years if I remember correctly.
  17. Mainly choice 1 and 2, with a smattering of choice 3.
