  1. To answer the first question, I would say that no, they did not have 'proper' schools if you mean school in an institutional sense.
  2. Doh! I can't believe I have not tried this local porter! My last purchase was New Belgium's seasonal Saison Harvest Ale, but its a bit light for me though it has a nice peppery flavor. Btw, try the 1554 if you can get it.
  3. Holy eugenics, Batman! The Eloi and the Morlocks!
  4. There is also nothing wrong with an individual wanting to maintain his/her identity. This is the main statement that I'm concerned with. I'm just stating observations of U.S. history, as a caveat, where immigrants were made out to be a threatening mass along with the primary supporters of Americanization and their true nature as I percieve it. I can't honestly say if there is a current threat. All I have to go on is someone else's word. I agree that there is indeed a problem, but I try to base it on my own principles. For instance, if I lived in Mexico, I would migrate to the U.S. - legally or not. If I lived in China, I would migrate to the U.S. - legally or not. Etc, etc.
  5. Philanthropic foundations - namely those of Ford, Rockefeller and Carnegie. They were (are?) the key players in formation of education policy and even foriegn policy. Now... grasp this... the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation currently has an endowment of almost 32 billion dollars. Whether the true intentions are right or wrong, that is an incredible amount of potential influence. The CEO is Patty Stonesifer. Her husband is Michael Kinsley, known for his involvement in Crossfire, The New Republic (coincidentally co-founded by Walter Lippmann) and Slate among others. And yes, it is the parent's/family's responsibility. Unfortunately, the current system effectively replaces the parent in several crucial ways.
  6. It's human nature to deny anything that will create inconsistencies in one's world view. Suppose you could indeed convince this person, it would mentally wreck him. At least, this is what my experiences have shown me. It's no excuse, but it should be expected from any zealous person, despite their particular belief.
  7. Either way, I don't think it will affect UNRV. But... I think the situation is a catch 22 because it involves U.S. telecommunications.
  8. Funny... this kind of thing happened in the nineteenth century. Those immigrants had to be 'Americanized' so that they didn't pose any sort of threat. Take a look at the ideologies of the most fervent Americanizers. I'll put one out on the table - Henry Ford, recipient of the Grand Cross of the Supreme Order of the German Eagle by the Nazis.
  9. http://edge.org/documents/archive/edge183.html An interesting read for me, adds more perspective to what I do online.
  10. Well, we are democratic republics with an ever more corporate government. Is that an oxymoron?
  11. There's a lot of viewable content on the website, regardless.
  12. I'm curious about what 'Dacia' really means in this context. From De Bello Gallico, Book 6, Chapter 25: In particular, he indicates that the forest extends in a line along the Danube to the territories of the Daci and Anartes. As far as I know, the territories of the Arnates were north of the Pathissus river close to NE Pannonia and the sharp southern bend in the Danuvius. Would this indicate that Caesar's conception of 'Dacia' was more like NE Pannonia, rather than the Carpathian/Transylvanian mountains which would have been considerably outside the territories of Rome at that point? Edit: Nevermind... I just figured out that the Dacian kingdom at the time extended to that point.
  13. I don't think it's any concern to me who lives here as long as they want to live an independent rather than dependent life. 'Extinction of the great race'... bah... people are people.
  14. I usually do not watch much television. The exeptions are a few shows on the Discovery/History/Science channels and the sitcom, 'The Office.' Recently, I was looking at the dazzling array of crap that I pay a monthly fee for, trying to somehow justify the cost other than just accepting that my wife watches more tv than I do. As I was skipping through, I stumbled upon a show that at first seemed documentary-ish but was actually some footage of three guys exploring miles of tunnels underneath Paris. Even if they didn't stop to eat their lunch in a large chamber full of human bones beneath some sort of graveyard, it was captivating. The station it was on is called Current, which apparently involves viewers in the selection and creation of content. This interaction is carried over on to their website, http://www.current.tv , where you can find out how to submit your own content, rate submitted content to determine if it will make it on air, watch selected submissions, etc. I find most of it very interesting and I just thought I'd share it with everyone, since much of UNRV's content is now driven by member contributions.
  15. Heres the deal, short and sweet. We stay on top of security updates and upgrades. The exploited part of the forum was supposedly up to date, unless you take into account that Invision, at some time between now and the initial release, made critical security updates to the latest version without any notifications or changes in the version number. So, in essence two forums can have the same version number of the same forum addon and one might be vulnerable because it was updated sooner than later.
  16. Be careful!!! You might rip a hole in the time-space continuum!!!!
  17. I just figured out what happened and I am ****** livid. I'll explain it later when I'm not so tired, but all I have to say is that I've lost my last shread of faith in Invision Power Services' competence.
  18. I'm sure they could but constructive doesn't get you props from other idiot kids. I'm just grateful it wasn't extensively destructive.
  19. Do historians share a foreign policy consensus that others do not? I don't know but I would tend to think that specific specialization is irrelevant. But... I'm curious to see how all us Romanophiles tend to think. For anyone that cares to answer - what do you think the proper role of government is regarding foreign policy?
  20. With IE cookies, it may be difficult to find all of them. In IE to go Tools > Internet Options... In the Settings popup window, click the 'View Files...' button to bring up another poup window that will contain your cookies and some other files. This new window has rows of files and columns of information - (Name, Internet Address, Type, etc). The page will reload and you should still be logged out. If you are magically logged in again, you need to manually delete all your UNRV cookies. You should try this if you have login problems anyways. Delete IE cookies. Delete Firefox cookies. The cookies may be under unrv.com, .unrv.com, or www.unrv.com. Either way delete them. Login, making sure 'Remember Me' is checked. Close your browser, open a new browser window and see if you are logged in. Let me know how this works.
