  1. The list shows you if they are online and gives you a quick link to send a PM. I'm not sure what practical use the profile comments serve. As far as your picture goes, I'm not sure. I'm just glad the upgrade didn't kill a lot more things than it did.
  2. Ahh but the current craze is not to improve efficiency of fossil fuel use, but to switch to new and unproven alternatives.
  3. I appreciate the complements! Thank you.
  4. Well here is the thing if China is not the main country in Asian who is? Thailand, Burma, laos, North Korea, Malasysia who. It might possibly be/become the main economic player, but not 'THE country of all Asia.' That phrase indicates to me that India, Japan and S. Korea are insignificant in Asia. I can't really dispute this, I can only say that I value the opinion of the people I know because they are grateful and successful despite starting out with almost nothing. Ok, I'm really going to stop now.
  5. Happy birthday! Enjoy the next 10 years.
  6. Can it be said that all of these statements stem from Aristotle?
  7. If you see any weird stuff or out of place colors/graphics, just post them here.
  8. My day job even makes me feel like a waste of society.
  9. It's a very broad generalization, but this is just how I feel based on my relationships with several foreigners, ranging from Bosnia to the Philippines. The one idea they all had in common was that we (mostly) take what we have for granted. Our country is the most capable of protecting its interests. I think this has a far greater role in these matters than is acknowledged. I disagree. As much as I like to argue, I'm sure most of you know my opinions by now. I really should turn my attention to other things.
  10. You're equating 'working more' to 'working better for a given cost' or 'working as well for less cost'. China is only one country in East Asia. There are very rich areas of China and very poor areas, I don't see how that means that they are not catching up. I suppose GM's production activity there is a step backwards for them? Yes, they have pitfalls ahead of them, but there is a lot of economic momentum in that part of the globe, regardless of ideology or moral stances on the subject.
  11. The fact is, other countries are catching up to the United States whether anyone likes it or not. Many people in those countries want to see improvement and have the drive to achieve it. Meanwhile, we have become complacent as a natural result of prosperity. Things will have to adjust. It's not just as simple as 'we need to keep jobs in the U.S. and paying our workers more while expecting our standard of living to be affordable.' Ever wonder why ethanol is touted as the alternative fuel par excellence?
  12. Pretty soon, you won't be able to function a full day without turning into a criminal in some way. Reminds me of original sin.
  13. Norton can't prevent/cure hardware specific errors, the problem is similar to putting a malfunctioning stick of memory into your computer. BTW, did you try out different burning software?
  14. It shouldn't cause any more damage than whats already occurring, it should just eliminate the situation causing the crashes - specifically, corrupted virtual memory on the hard drive.
  15. Do you know how much memory you have? Basically, your memory (RAM) is fast, temporary storage for files that are being used. Because system memory is a very limited resource, Windows also uses virtual memory, which is space on your hard drive used in the same way your RAM is. Your computer is crashing because the stuff in virtual memory on your hard drive is being corrupted. If you have enough RAM, I can show you how to change your memory settings to only use RAM and hopefully stop the crashing until you get a new computer, though it will probably run a little slower and data will continue to be corrupted on the hard drive. If you right click on the 'My Computer' icon and select 'Properties' it will bring up the System Properties window with your computer info. In the lower part it will say something similar to: Computer: Intel
  16. You may be right about the hard drive. That error usually only comes up when there is a problem with the hard drive controller on the motherboard (or its drivers), the hard drive cable, or the drive itself. You should at least boot into safe mode (by tapping F8 right before windows starts to load) and run chkdsk:
  17. What software do you use with the CD-RW? Adaptec. I would use the free trial of software like Nero... http://www.download.com/Nero-7-Ultra-Editi...tml?tag=lst-0-2 and see if the burner is capable of functioning with different software. If it works, then you have a problem with your current software. If it doesn't work, there might be a problem with the burner itself. BTW, you are using Windows Millennium Edition?
  18. What software do you use with the CD-RW? http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_attrib....ws+xp+home/rd=1 Also, a lot of online retailers have XP computers still in stock. Ubuntu Linux is free
  19. Thanks for sharing this. I hadn't heard of the solar energy theory, but it makes a lot of sense. BTW, I don't think that was a BBC program.
  20. Have you ever checked for dust inside the case? Do you keep the computer in an enclosed space? The most likely sources of problems are software and dust/cooling issues. Blowing your hard drive is difficult to 'do' during normal use. A system restore should be an absolute last resort. What kind of disc?
  21. What exactly is your computer doing?
