  1. Fantastic list ASCLEPIADES, no World War battles though, I would have put D-day or Dunkerque. Arminius is a surprise, i would think Trasimene or Trebia is a more world changing battle. Nothing from the crusades. Otherwise great! vtc
  2. What particular 'units' did the Illyrians have? The Emperor series by Conn Iggulden suggests they paint themselves blue and are very similar to the british. RTW seems to suggest they are just javelin throwing peltasts and falx wielders. Any thoughts? vtc
  3. I have already posted in this, but i would love to know more about and see Illyria discussed more. vtc
  4. I'm back with another few questions. Did the scutum have an iron (or any other metal for that matter) rim and was the bottom edge sharpened to stab down on feet. I have heard this. Because of the way a maniple works, you protected the man on your letf with your shiled and you were protected by the man on your right but what about the man on the furthest right, was he a particuarly skilled fighter to be given no protection? Centuries or maniples or whatever were in rectangular shapes, right? so shouldn't a few of the enemy slip imbetween and the lines split or is this a multimedia myth? Did the Optios use their staff's in battle? Where were the pila kept before being thrown? A bit gruesome, but when the mangled bodies began to pile up, didn't the enemy have a height advantage so in battle did the legion slowly step backwards to avoid this or step forward? When was the drop to the knee, cover the body and stab up into the groin technique first used? Did the triarii have a gladius and dagger as well as the hasta? That'll do again.............for now vtc
  5. But without several civil wars Rome could have imploded on itself. Think without the civil war between Caesar and Pompey their would have been Emperors. Without that who knows what would have happened. I will try and develop a few of these ideas another day. vtc
  6. I know at 147 bc there was approximately halfa million, i therefore suppose that Rome reached the big million when Aurelian expande the walls. vtc
  7. Nothing could match the true comeradery of a legion, a real bond of friendship, brotherhood. Your life rested on those to your right but the problem with that is the probable likelihood of death. Which i am not so keen on, that is not to say i fear it, but i would not like to be put in the front line. I would like to have came from a senatorial background, just to have politics as a reserve. My optimum life would be out of the slog that is politics though, maybe an action packed stay in Illyria later to develop a knack at forging, and help at the legion smith. Yet have enough time to find a roman girl whatever. vtc
  8. Guess who? I assume the city it was near to is pergamum. Could it be Kinik? vtc
  9. I started it to try and spark a few posts on what did actually happen, considering 157bc is prime republic time i thought it would be suitable here. Somehow the thread has spiralled off into obscurity though . Maybe it should be moved. vtc
  10. Amazing! I love your refined style, unique yet profoundly original. Can you give me an insight onto the attire of the crouching celtiberian has. He seemed to draw my eye even though he is in the earthy colours. Cheers vtc
  11. hmmmmmmmmmmm i seem to be the only 1 guessing. sratoticaea (wild card or what) vtc
  12. Heres a start I know of these: Lantrunculi (a game not dissimilar from chess, where the objective is to defeat your opponent by removin all his pieces from the board, it involves many military tactics so was popular among the learned and generals). The Venus throw which i think is a dice game that has four sides and knucklebones. This was where the game the majority played. Noughts and crosses were also played, but i don't know if this is true. The tabula which is also similar to the twelve line game I believe that the most interesting is the ludus duodecim scriptormu or the twelve line game. This and teh tabula became mordern backgammon. Here is my source http://www.britannica.com/eb/topic-350810/...ecim-Scriptorum and this site has a picture of a tabula on an urn http://www.tassoni.it/ancient-rome/romerecreation.htm sorry i can't be of more help vtc
  13. Close Geographically? Ok is it Laodecea? vtc
  14. I'm back and so frustrated, i was thinking about taking a holiday for 1 day to turkey visit every attraction. Is this Troy
  15. Definitely a sign! Throughout history the sky has been the home of the gods and such a phenomenon would have almost definitely been interpreted by the Romans as a sign. Whether good or bad, depends on directions or so forth. It would be interesting to see what they made of the listed appearances. vtc
  16. For a good painting of the toga picta from the times visit this site it has an unclear toga picture as well where i can't determine the colour of the stripes. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/comm..._toga_picta.jpg vtc
  17. Indeed, i have once again not read through what was going on. oh well. vtc
  18. Whereas Primus Pilus is and as a result can change the rules hehehehehe vtc Ps Actually Primus if you are reading this can you just take a look at my predicament to do with my profile (its in Consilium Comitiorum, Nephele gaves me some pointers but was no success) [MOD EDIT=PP] I edited this post rather than reply so as not to screw up the thread... I looked at your profile and everything looks normal to me, you may want to send a PM to Moonlapse, but I'm not sure what if anything he can do.
  19. I was recently challenged to an air guitar duel but lost because i was deemed to be to realistic Do you want to buy my air pick? vtc
  20. How about the mini battle of the beserker on stamford bridge 1 man versus a few. Or the political battle between Alexander and Philotas (does that count). Otherwise Id say the battle of thermopylae was pretty small and unimagianbly important. 3000ish (300 + 2000 + 1000) is a pretty small number considering this wasn't a garrisonning force. vtc
  21. fine... last guess for today Phocaea (but its wrong becaue the ruins aren't big enough) vtc
  22. Well I'm back but this time with a different name. Can i go again? oh well. uaibiuosestvirbsict just curious? *raised eyebrow* vtc
