  1. Personnaly i'd laugth my head off the crown jewels are horrible ugly pieces and they mean nothing to me,they may mean something to other Brits but i dont care about them (sorry).Anyway the nasty, thieving Colonizing British courts ruled in favour of the Indians in the Siva Icon case, which wasnt owned by the British museum,it was brought to the museum to be restored and the staff impounded the piece when they saw what it was,so were not all bad . The British museum is wanting to return four drawings which were stolen from a Czech Jew by a Nazi during WW2 but its British LAW that nothing in the B.Museums vast collection can leave it.The Attorney General (Lord Goldsmith) has asked the High Court to clarify whether the museum has a moral duty to return property obtained improperly. If the High court rules in favour of returning property improperly obtained then the Elgin marbles (probably the most famous of Britains stolen artifacts, even though Elgin payed the Ottoman Emperor for them and if he never took them they would of probably been destroyed) could well be on there way back to Greece. What i do want to see returned is the 36 Saxon drinking horns currently situated in North American university's,these pieces are not on public display the uni's use them to educate future archiologists. At least the 'stolen' artifacts in the British museum can be seen by anybody free of charge. And while the Americans are giving the Horns back could they put London Bridge onto a boat and send that back too please Personnaly i think the Elgin marbles and other such artifacts should be returned to there rightfull owners,as long as there going to be looked after properly and just as important displayed to the public for no money charge. Do you think the French will ever give the British the Bayeaux Tapestry? And a good portion of the Louvre collection was looted by Napolean, give it back Frenchies
  2. LOL I thought that coach was going to thump somebody .Why's he speaking two languages?i've noticed the actors doing that in Bollywood movies, there speaking in urdo (or some other Indian dialect) then they sprout of a few lines in English why? Does anyone like the Zutons?they've just released there second album (Tired of hanging around) i love it! Valerie Its good this Youtube,i found Creep ,Radiohead used to rock my world . Im getting old can you remember This?
  3. Pakistan gained Independance from India after WW2,i think it was 1947. L
  4. "I like a man who grins when he fights", Winston Churchill.
  5. Its supposed to be released on June 1st,so only a week to wait . Alexander TotalWar Edit to fix link.
  6. I can remember watching it when i was a kid,i seem to remember a misty dragon what lived in the woods,is that the right movie?
  7. Reading the culture and traditions page on that site and it appears the Scots are going to name the new waterfront in Edinburgh Via Albana or Via Romana .
  8. Had a talk with a friend who's a lot more knowledgable than me on the Saxons and he favours Bromborough for the battle site.If not Bromborough then he thinks it would of been on the other side of the Pennines,in South Yorkshire. Longbow.
  9. The Romans may have used a similar method to the 'Nightsoil men'.My guess is probably slaves cleaning the streets in the early hours, someone must of taking it away. You cant just let it build up in the streets can you?after a couple of months you wouldnt be able to open your front door
  10. I live in the North East of England and my surname derives from an old Danish word,so i can assume i have some Norse in me .Maybe some Norman blood (doubtful) probably some Angle (as it was the Angles who settled up north not the Saxons).Maybe a bit of Roman (or the Auxillia) because of the proximety of the wall and the Veteran collony at York. Before then it was the Brigante Celtic tribe who had control of this part of the Island so maybe a bit of Celtic blood is still mixed in. But my mothers family came to the North east in 1920's,before then they lived in Sussex but they hadnt been there for very long.Just long enougth for my mams Grandfather to join the 8th Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment and he went to the war,he was killed at the battle of the Somme in 1918 (i have some great pictures of him in his uniform,he looks like Errol flynn ). My Mams family came to England from county Cork(Eire),the Rebel County ,there's a link to some Irish Celt blood. Just a mix and mash of all the peoples who've lived on the Island really, who can really tell? Royal Sussex Regiment.
  11. Your page seems ok to me but im no expert,Andrew Dalby and Pertinax are the Food experts around here (you have a picture of one of Andrew's books on the page). We did get taught that the Rabbit was a Norman introduction but new archeological evidence proves that the Romans brought them here. BBC news
  12. There's quite a few different theories to the sites Whereabouts but without any artifact finds its impossible to be sure,Somewhere on the Wirral is my best guess The important thing about this battle is the unification of the southern Eanglish kingdoms, which was obviously nescessary to beat the King of Alba and the king of Dublin (viking)or Dyflin as the Saxons called Dublin (Eire). The Irish contingents would be from King Olaf Guthfrithsson the Viking King of Dublin who was married to King Constantine of Alba's (Scotland) daughter.Constantine's Kingdom included parts of North west Wales but 'Welsh' is the Saxon word for Foreigner, the Saxons called the native Britons 'Welsh' so the welsh contingents in the army were not nescessarily from Wales, but some probably were. Do you like the Poem?its obviously a piece of Saxon propergander and im not sure how much later than the battle it was actually added to the Chronicle, any ideas? I still think its a good piece though. Longbow
  13. Im surprised at her view too,Remembrance day is a pretty big deal in Britain still.Everyone wears poppy's leading up to the sunday(especially in schools) and the parade at the cenotaph where all the WW1 and WW2 veterans march past the royal family is televised on the BBC and ITV.It must just be her personnal opinion but i assure you its not the opinion of most of the British.
  14. Whoo there,i think your getting me mixed up m8, it was Princeps who chose to watch Braveheart not me(i watched Hannibal) .Dont get me started on Braveheart i could be here all day listing the faults with that crap! The most annoying thing about Bravehaert, apart from the battle scene at Stirling Bridge (without the bridge ) where Wallace 'invents' pike warfare is the fact they left Andrew Murray out completely!Murray's the true hero of the Scots not Wallace. I think its unacceptable to recreate the scenes using the wrong equipment, you can at least try and hide the stirrups/saddles like they did in the 'Alexander' movie. The HBO/BBC Rome series didnt use stirrups at all,i know they had a bigger budget and therefore could afford to employ better riders but they could of tried to be more accurate at least for the close up shots where the horses arent even moving, how hard can it be to sit on a horse and say a few lines? Its not that i think the Roman costumes are unaccurate,i think they didnt look very good on the actors (dont think i saw one soldier who's helmet or cuirass actually fitted them correctly) and it all just looked a bit cheap and plasticy. But the Numidian cavalry didnt look anything like it should, and thats wrong IMHO. I did enjoy the production but the little details niggle at me,i cant help it Longbow
  15. I wasnt overly impressed with the costume departments work the cuirass's the Romans wore looked like they were made from cheap plastic, kinda like the ones in a child's costume set. I thought the Numidian cavalry looked stupid, they didnt even bother to hide the stirrups or the saddles for that matter! I did like the acting and the CGI work was good, but the best thing about this programme was the documentary that was on just after it last night, did anyone see it?it was a lot better than the drama. There was a Elephant trainer on the programme who said it would take 8 tons to feed 36 elephants every day!!!Of course Hannibals 36 elephants were a smaller species than his African ones but not that much smaller, how did Hannibal hope to feed them on the journey never mind get them over the Alps?seems ludicrous to even entertain taken the beasts with you.
  16. Jerusalem once had a female ruler,Melisende and her husband Fulk of Anjou became joint rulers in 1131 (she had ruled alone since 1129).Fulk was doing all the ruling but melisende wanted the power aswell. In the 1130's they had a war!and her forces won after that it was her and not him who was doing all the ruling she was very much in charge. William of Tyre wrote Or something like that She so liked the power she didnt want to give it up when Baldwin III (her son) hit his 16th birthday and reached his majority,he had to fight his mothers troops to get control of the crown, laying seige to her in the tower of David.Baldwin won but he didnt punish his mother, she then became one of his closest advisors. 17. So what,we invented Tennis too when was the last time an Englishman/women won anything at Tennis? Fair enougth ,i only mentioned the war because you mentioned the rivalry and it is a part of the hostilities between the two sets of supporters.I like the rivalry between the teams it makes for good football matches, and that can only be good right? We only expext to win because they (players/manager) tell us there going to win,how can it weaken the managers position when its him who claims it?and i think Svens position is weak enougth, lets face it,its Beckham who runs that team. England can hardly be accused of 'giving it a good go' during the last world cup could they?the match against a ten man Brazil team just about summed those underachieving pre madonna's up. Anyway,i look forward to this summers finals and you never know we might just win it (only joking,i know we've got no chance ) Longbow
  18. Who told you that gem? In the 98 world cup we drew 2-2 at 90minutes( we only had 10 men ) Argentina won on a penalty shootout 2002 world cup we beat them 1-0 2005 friendly match (hehehe no such thing when your playing the Argies) we beat them 3-2! The rivalry between the teams dates back to the 1966 world cup match (which we won),the game they played was one of the dirtiest international matches ever played!the Argentinians were described as Animals by the International press after this game (the fouls were terrible, you did that today some players would be arrested for assault) the England manager would not allow any of his team to swop shirts with the Argies after the game,he ran on the pitch to stop them . Then you have the 1982 war, which we allso won The 1986 world cup when maradonna blatenly cheated to get the Argies the win which knocked us out of the competition (cheating ********). Its all good fun though ,i cant wait to the competion starts Humiliated?its more of a humiliation if your team dont even qualify for the tournament isnt it?who are Scotland playing this summer?when was the last time Scotland qualified for a world cup? I look forward to Scotland humiliation every time a Scotsman puts a football shirt on (all in good fun m8)
  19. They were croos trained too,the Legionaries would become proficiant in all the Legions weapons and fighting styles. This would include Slinging training,Archery, riding, swimming, basic medical care, then there's all the building skills they would need for errecting camps and the construction of roads etc...They were highly skilled people.

  21. They allso have the advantage of a padded cloved hoof,so they dont do any damage to the ground unlike cattle and sheep.Beautiful animals.
