Is this this the coin in question? Why not m8? The Elgin Marbles are not the best exhibit in the world are they? I dont know what all the fuss is about.I wasnt overly impressed when i saw them,in fact i thought they looked pretty poor compared to the Persian Statues and Reliefs (which you have to walk past to get to the marbles).I say give them back to Greece it might stop them whinging and make some space on the museum floor for a better exhibit . Sutton Hoo Helmet (From the ship Burial) edit: to fix the coin link,it was a Brutus coin but somehow it turned into a drawing .

The Bronze Harness fittings were allso very sophisticated. The fittings are beautifully decorated, made out of Bronze with coloured glass inlaid it was skillful craftsmen who made the examples in the British Museum.Did they use steam to bend the wood to the right shape? Bit off topic but it looks like Israel's going to be knocking heads with the major middle eastern countries in a while, it could get very messy very soon for all of us if Iran takes Israel on.I dont think the British army is capable of commiting any more troops, with soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq the Army's overstretched as it is (according to ITV news). If British troops are needed for this new war (if it happens) they'll have to pull them out of there current tasks. Romans Vs Boudica Were They Just Fluky?
longbow replied to wally1987's topic in Gloria Exercitus - 'Glory of the Army'
Everyone's assuming the Celtic warriors just rushed at the Roman lines, are we certain thats how these people fought there battles?I find it a bit hard to believe, usually a people will addapt tactics to suit the foe.The British 'Celts' new about Rome and its fighting style long before any legionnarie's landed on the shores, they new what they faced. The British 'Celts' had chariots which carried a driver and a warrior, the driver would use his skill to get the chariot moving fast enougth and close enougth for the warrior to loose his javelins at the Roman ranks. For this to be done some discipline is required from the waiting mass of warriors or the chariots would be useleless. So thats one tactic . Another one was to ride your horse at the enemy then jump off and engage on foot, this sounds daft but if you think about it the Legionnaire would be expecting to fight a man on horse back then he's faced with a man on foot,it may catch you off guard for long enougth to cause problems. How common was the famous Celtic longsword?a sword is a expensive bit of kit and a longsword is not only expensive it was hard to make in the period in question.I think they would of been reserved for the rich and famous with the majority of warriors armed with spears and Axes. You can make a defensive shield wall work if your troops are using the spear or the axe (Saxons made it work all day long at Hastings ).I dont think anyone's ever mentioned Celts using shield wall's but why wouldnt they?.Caractacus was supposed to be a good leader,i find it hard to believe that he would waist his men by letting them charge the Roman ranks one on one. Wonder what he said to him to cause such a reaction? How many commercials are shown during a televised baseball/football game in the states? There is commercials on ITV and the cable channels which show footy matches (only the BBC doesnt show commercials) in Britain but they dont air them during the match. They show them before the start, during half time and at the finnish before the interviews with the players. Yellow and red cards are integral to the sport, dont you have them or something similar in the NFL?I watched a NFL game once and a player got sent off the field for tackling helmet to helmet, twice!I cant remember if the ref brandished any cards at the bloke though,i think they just told him to get off. When that happens in a game can you bring on a replacement or do you have to play a man down like in football? Can you ever see the American kids putting down the Baseball gloves and shoulder pads to pick up soccer balls? The American sports are great games and i think the Americans like the fact that there unique to them,i dont think 'Soccer' will ever be a contender to the more traditional American sports. South Korea played Germany in the semi's of the 2002 cup and they were on home soil, the advantage of palying at home is immense.Teams usually play well when there staging the tournament (usually),not wanting to let the nation down and all that. The England team needs shooting ,some of the best individual players in the world (defense, midfield) with the worlds highest payed international manager (godamn you Sven!) and the best travelling support in the world and they STILL cant manage to win a penalty shootout! It would be a great coup for the Americans to grab Klinsmen, before this tournament the Germans wanted him sacked but now he's golden balls! He's proved his worth getting to the semi's with some mediocre players Ballack,Lehman and Klose are top class but the rest of them are nothing special,Even though it was there tournament its still a good result the last four. However,i think that its better for a team not to have a foreign manager.Foreign manager's dont have the same pride and passion for the country that the players and fans have.Look at Sven,he couldnt give a toss,he just want his

Im lucky,i see Kestrel's all the time. There's a few of them nesting in the woods near my house, you often see them hovering looking for prey. Two days ago a Sparrow hawk chose to kill a bird and eat it in the middle of my lawn!he had it plucked and eaten in minutes but it took me ages to clear all the feathers up! I love wild things and i like to see them as often as possible in my daily routine,im not too keen on cleaning bloody feathers up though .

Im a great fan of Scarrows books too,if you liked his novels you'll like Bernard Cornwell's historical fiction, there styles are very similar. I still havent read the last book in the series (its on my list) but i greatly enjoyed Macro and Cato's romp over Brittania .

Im glad the Portugese beat the Dutchies, the diving tactics by the Holland team was getting on my nerves all match. All players in all teams have a bit of a dive now and then but the Dutch last night were disgraceful! Rolling and flipping on the ground as if they've been shot, then remarcably jumping up like a spring lamb once the player has been booked .No wonder Figo lost his rag and stuck the nut on one of them . The play- acting in todays football is a goddamn shame ,it spoils the sport when players are trying to get other players dissmissed,i understand gaining an advantage and all that but its unsporting behavour and the culprits should be sent off for diving, which is the rule, but refs dont enforce it because they'd be no one left on the pitch. Could you imagine the likes of Terry butcher and Graeme souness rolling around like todays players do? LOL. Terry butcher back when footballers were real men. Its unfair to blame the referee for all the cards which were given out (a world record i beleive),the players are the ones who should be blamed. This is all good news for England fans though ,Deco and Costinha are ruled out of Saturdays game because of there Red cards and Ronaldo's not looking good with the thigh injury (oooh, that was a stinger) which can only help the English, and we need all the help we can grab!

Its been a while since i had a drive up to the wall,i live just below Hetton le hole, bottom right on the map. Ramses asks why it was built when there was so few attacks, its worth remembering that the wall wasnt just a barrier against invasion,it was allso a way of controlling the trade between the tribes. If you wanted to sell your goods in the north you would have to go through the Roman controlled gatehouse and obviously vice versa. Then you could be taxed on your goods. Only certain parts could be attacked like that because of the geography of the ground,a lot of the wall is built across ridges,it follows the contours (spelling) of the land.

Crested Plumes On Helmets
longbow replied to Pantagathus's topic in Gloria Exercitus - 'Glory of the Army'
The Republic Legionnaries bought there own gear so couldnt they have whatever decoration they wanted on there helms?or was there some uniformaty laws regarding the armour you brought to service with you? I prefere how feathers look rather than the crest's,purely based on looks mind you i dont know what would be better for spying your superior's. RTR Legionnaries. The Macedonian Helms allso tend to extend the warriors height, this one from Phillips tomb is a good example of the style allthough im not sure if its ceromonial, its not one of my favourite Helms . Infantry Helm. -
First half England were all over the Swedes but the level dropped in the second half again.Beckhams schoolboy errors trying to defend the front post for set plays were at fault for the two goals.Whoever decided to put him in that critical position wants there head looking at! Both the England goals were excellent finishes,Gerrards header was textbook and Joe Coles volley was a cracker! It looks like Owen's out of the competion with a Knee injury,i cant say im dissapointed about it though,he's playing crap anyway. England are going to have to do something about there second half performance, when we go up against better oposition (presuming we beat Ecuador) we'll get turned over if it isnt sorted out. Im really enjoying these finals, the German hosts are doing a great job!the erection of the big screens in the parks etc seems to be keeping everyone happy and in the party spirit, even the English and the Argentinians were partying together!WOW. I hope the party spirit carries on and this is the first world cup for years without major crowd violence, its early days but its looking good.

I thought the destruction of the nose and beard had been atributed to the Islamic cleric,Sa'im al-dahr in the 14th CE.He apparently had the Sphinx dissfigured because the local Egyptions were leaving offerings to it at harvest time.

If he wasnt offside it wouldnt matter You can stand in a offside position as long as your not interfering with play,as the player was behind the defenders when the ball was struck (offside) and his body was blocking the keepers view of the ball,he's interfered with play. Yes,it was banned a while ago.A two footed challenge is deamed to be dangerous and reckless as when both feet are off the ground your not in control of the tackle. If a man has his leg planted and you two foot him in the shin or knee area, you'll snap his leg.For that reason the FIFA rule to referee's is to by pass the booking (which is a warning) and give a mandatory striaight red card. You dont even have to hit the player either,if you lunge in and miss him you'll still get sent off. Years ago it was perfectly acceptable to elbow people, like what happened to Mcbride last night. But because its dangerous and players were getting series injuries FIFA deemed it a red card offence,no warning issued (yellow card) instant dismissal from the field (which happened in the game). If you get sent off for a elbowing you will allso receive a ban. I think the USA deserved to win the match, there style is similar to Englands which is at a faster pace than the Meditaranian teams like to play at, and i thought they showed more passion. Its hard to play against the Italians though because they go over like they've been poleaxed if you so much as brush against them! Didnt the senate declare Antony 'inimicus'? Invalidating the laws he passed as Consul, which means Gaius looses Macedonia.
-
Oh i dont know it was a pretty rougth game. The dissalowed goal was the correct call,Mcbride was obstructing the keepers view therefore interfering with play so he's offside. The elbow incident was shocking and thoroughly deserved his red card and the probably suspension he'll receive. The two footed tackle what got the USA player sent was the correct call too,its dangerous when a player lunges in with both feet (broken legs) thats why the tackle was banned.Ten years ago you could do those tackles all match,as long as you won the ball it didnt matter what happened to the player, but now it'll get you sent off.The players know it but they still do it in the heat of the moment. However,i didnt think the defender who got two booking's deserved either of them! two bad calls by mr referee there. Good match though i enjoyed it. Longbow

Argentina are looking good, that goal with something like 23 passes was amazing!it will be on the wonder goal DVD's for years to come.Unless England pull there socks up i dont think they'll stand a chance against this Argie team .

Cats Are Scary Animals.
longbow replied to FLavius Valerius Constantinus's topic in Hora Postilla Thermae
My dog got beat up off a cat once and he's a big six stone Boxer dog he went over to check the cat out and the bloody thing stuck its claws into his face and wouldnt let go when i finally managed to get its claws out of him he ran into the house up the stairs and hid under my bed crying his eyes out -
I wouldnt use the FIFA ranking's as a guide to the world cup.The FIFA system is based on wins only, this can be missleading because certain teams dont play very good opposition (depending on where there based goegraphically and what competitions they play in),so they win a lot of the time. The bookmakers are a better source because they base there odd's on a teams ability and form. Current odds. 1 Brazil 5/2 2England 6/1 3Argentina 15/2 4Italy 9/1 5Holland 12/1 The Czechs are at 20/1!!!!wow.Even though they've probably lost Koller (48 goals in 67 internationals,phew...) for the rest of the tournament, they have a really good team and i quite fancy them now.I'll certainly be putting twenty quid on them at those odds . USA's odds are at 500/1,the Americans have got it tougth in group E with teams like Italy and Ghana to play and i cant see them qualifying after loosing in the first match.I hope they can do it though (anything can happen its football) i really want to see a USA v Iran game ,It'll make us and the Argies same tame World cup Odds checker.
-
True, but the match in question was between two full streangth teams and Eng v Arg are allways competitive games. When he says 'exhibition match' it makes me think of teams like the Harlem globe trotters,a team who does tricks and such.Friendly international football matches are not like that all. Yeah but,Tflex said The world cup finals are the highest stage in international football and England have played in more finals than Argentina so how is Argentina more accustomed to playing at that level I think i can answer that myself, because they won it more. But i dont want to godamnit!! I know we have no chance of winning the cup but i can hope cant i?i think we can get to the semi's if we have a good draw but i think the finals out of our reach. Brazil are just too good for the rest of us,i cant see anybody beating them. The Spanish and the Italians are strong but i think we can beat those teams, maybe. The Argentinians are good but not as good as us (sorry Tflex couldnt resist ). I've got three full weeks holiday booked in at work starting tomorrow yah!!! so im looking forward to watching all these great games, regardless of who wins (Come on England!!!!!).
-
Firstly there's no such thing as an Exhibition game,do you think the premiership clubs would allow there palyers to play in such games??the answers no. Secondly, what's this highest stage your talking about??England clubs play to a higher level than Argentinian, the European cups are the most important in the world. The European championship is better than the south American counterpart,England plays in that competion,Argentina obviously dont!England have played in more world cups than Argentina,so what you talking about? Did you watch the game?i dont think you saw it or you wouldnt of said that crap!it was a hell of a match!one of the best encounters between the two teams.Read this Wiki quote because you obviously didnt even watch the match. I havent avoided your 'Challenge', i ignored it.I think (hope, really) England will win it!i allready placed bets with the William hill (bookmakers, seven bets in all),i dont know you,why the hell would i bet you?if England beat the Argies i dont think for a minute you'd send me

It can get a bit more series than that,a bottle thrown into a crowd is not comparable with some of the trouble which goes on.You think its exciting,i think its terrifying, especially when we've got our family's with us and all we want to do is take the kids to the game. When you've got rival Firms fighting it out in the train stations and the Police waiting outside to lay there batons into anybody who comes out the station (they darent go in and stop the mayhem, they wait till its ended)!the Police rarely get stuck into the actual Firms (Hooligans) its the innocent supporters who get there skulls cracked open, especially abroad. There's nothing exciting about it.

Dr. Hawass Calls For Return Of Stolen Artifact
longbow replied to tflex's topic in Hora Postilla Thermae
Im confused by this did they steal them or pay for them? -
So your a football fan then?if its the fighting you like more than the actual contest why dont you watch a boxing contest or something?innocent fans and people get hurt in these Hooligan clashes, you want to hope you dont get caught up in the middle of one,its a very dangerous and scary place to be. I hope the Hooligans dont spoil this world cup but when you get sets of rivals supporters together in these situations its pretty inevitable.Hopefully the German police will crack them hard enougth and the competition wont be spoiled by the inevitable fighting, hopefully. I hear the German police are pretty good at crowed control/riot situations but i think they'll have there hands full. There was a newsnight report from somewhere (cant remember sorry)in the Balkans with the Hooligan element and there looking to get revenge for WW2!!!!jeez it may be a bloodbath. There was virtually no trouble at the last world cup but that was in Japan and the Hooligan's didnt bother going to the expense and trouble of travelling, but i think they'll all be there in Germany. The English get a bad name because of the Hooligans but where baby's compared to the Turks or the Serbs, they use handgrenades and Kalashnikovs!i hope there's no trouble but i think they will be i just hope it doesnt spoil the games. On a lighter note, i cant sleep for excitement!its the world cup, yah!i hope we do well but i think a semi final place is as high as England will go,they may not even qualify you never know how England will play .I really hope we get to play Argentina though, those games are great and i think we'll beat them just like last time the two country's played You make that sound like an underachievment, the last four in a world competition is a pretty good effort dont you think?
