He's got no Greaves on so i'd try to get my Spear into his ankles, hopefully his Tendons will cut and he'll drop like a stone .If he drops the Scutum to protect his ankles he's vulnerable to a Spear in the face then kick/charge his Scutum into him, once he's on the ground he's finished . Just trying to put an attacking point of view across L

One person thought Tony Blair wrote it! I did a search of my home town and its not listed, the closest town is Normanlay (Normanebi) in Yorkshire.I guess the people of Normanebi didnt fight against the Norman invaders,it sounds like a Norman settlement(traitors ). Longbow

Here's a interesting page.'the cosmic mysteries of Mithras. The Mithraeum at Carrawburgh is obviously built above ground but wasnt the Temple supposed to be underground?to simulate the cave. A underground Mithraeum, did the innitiates sacrifice the Bull in the Temple?i bet they had a right time of it getting a Bull down there if they did . L

Is any one playing this?you need to install Steam then you can download the game for free for one week's trial only. Its nothing like the usual FPS WW2 shooter's its more realistic and therefore a lot harder to play.I'll admit im struggling with it,not only the controlls (too many) but allso im having a hard time identifying the enemy,i got kicked of two servers this morning for teamkills ,i didnt know! And one John Wayne type shot my rifle out my hands Im going to stick with the game for a few more days, see if i can crack it because apparently once you get the hang of it,its the best online game out there. The Hibernian Tribes raided all along the West coast of Bitain so finds in Ireland could come from Dumnonia,Siluria,Powys,Elmet or even little Kernow. L Edit: i wrote East coast by mistake,it should of been West coast

The Roman army cavalry adopted the Draco from the Dacians during Trajan's campaign, there's twenty representations of the standard on his column. These early Draco's had animal heads (wolf, boar, snake, fish etc), it wasnt until later that the standard had a Dragons head. The Infantry started carrying the Draco around 300AD, but it was purely a visual aid, tests have shown you have to get up to a good galloping speed for the eerie noise to come through. Longbow -

I dont think its known what the Manus signify's, 'This far and no more!' seems a plausable theory to me.Or a copy of the Salute maybe? If the hand has a wreath around it that signify's a honour won for the Unit and the Crescent Moon below the phalerae is supposed to represent Mithras, but other Zodiac signs were allso used. The fringed bowl below the Zodiac sign looks like a good place to put your hand if it comes to using that thing as a weapon (unlikely i know). I like the Draco standards,Time Team ( a British TV show) recreated one and the sound it made as the guy was galloping along with it was really quite creepy,i imagine it scared the natives . -

Signum standards were used by Legionary and Auxiliary Century units, the "Manus"(human hand) represent's the first Century of a maniple formation(republic). The discs represent the number of units in the cohort,i think . Longbow -
The Celtic daggers look like they could do the job in a shield to shield situation . Dont know how you would hold this type but it seems to be a popular design. Hallstatt daggers.

I find it hard to beleive that every Celtic warrior was armed with a Longsword, swords were expensive and difficult to make.I'd be more inclined to think the majority of the warriors were armed with Spears,Saex's and Axes, those types of weapons are more affective and much easier to mass produce. Kirkburn sword. The Tarves horde.

Nice pics Pertinax,i wonder how many initiates would be in the Temple during the rites.Presumably there would allso be a Bull in there with them, for the sacrifice. L

Who want to settle down to England ,what the hell is that supposed to mean? How about fighting for your home, your family, your people and your land! Or did they just think to hell with it im off to fight for the Byzantians to get rich! The Saxons were allready rich,England was one of the richest country's in europe at the time.

Yeah originally, but over the century's other peoples joined the guard. When Harold Hardrada (King of Norway) was a striping youngster he and his men joined the Unit,he ended up in command. A quote from Wiki regarding the English Guardsmen. David Moreno quote.

The bad press they receive is richly deserved in my view (there's no love for the Conqueror in Durham),the ten year Genocidal campaign in Northumberland was a diabolic act of savagery by the Normans. You have to do a fair bit of Pillaging and burning to make a Earldom the size of Northumbria uninhabitable, which one of the Doomsday books states. With the departure of the Huscarls to the Varangian Guard after 1066,the best English troops had left the country so the Northumberland Earls allied with the Scots and Danes to fight the Normans. After the mixed force had captured York i feel they could of sued for a independent state but allas it wasnt to be and Williams Normans payed off the Danes and Edgar fled (Again) to the Scots. Its after this that the Normans commited the Genocide, they had allready won controll of the region there was no need to kill all the inhabitants. The people who escaped the sword were not spared, why kill all livestock, burn all crops and buildings?it sounds like revenge to me,punishing the people for so-called crimes of there masters. William the Conqueror (spit) the man was a dog, im glad he burst open at his funeral, i hope he stunk! Indeed,Edward III was the first Norman King to speak English as his first language. The Norman rulers were raised speaking French but would often learn English from the servants, this meant there English was erm..a bit course to say the least, plenty of swear words . I read the Alexander trilogy some time ago and it looks like i'm in the minority because i really disliked the books. The series is similar to Conn Iguldens Caesar books i found,a swashbuckling adventure of a group of pals. But i too am no Alexander expert so maybe it is accurate, but i doubt it. I did like scene when Alexander met Haphastion for the first time and they gave each other a milk tooth,Alexander didnt have one handy so he pulled one out his mouth . I read 'The Last Legion' last year sometime and this too i didnt like,i was enjoying it up untill all that nonsence about Caesar's magical sword, which Wulfilla just had to get his hands on,so much so he chases the fugitives all the way to Britain.Pffft,im not expecting much from the movie but i'll still watch it ,there's Romans in it afterall . I've booked all my holidays in at work for this year (off to Barcelona next week ) so it will be a bit difficult for me to get the extra time off.But if the meet isnt until next year i would be delighted to meet you all,i would favour somewhere like York but if given enougth notice i could probably do a trip to the Big smoke, but you'll have to drag me out of the British museum i just love the place .
