  1. Big Ben isnt on the list. The 21 contenders for the seven slots are,
  2. I think i would start with the first people to have a written language, was it the Sumerians of Mesopotamia who had the first written form? Good luck with this monumental task, sounds like a lifetimes work .
  3. The only way i can see Rome having Britains as slaves before colonisation is if they purchased them from Gaul.Slaves were taken as spoils by the British tribes maybe the leaders of the winning tribes sold there surpluse to traders from Gaul, who intern sold them on to Roman traders.
  4. LOL A friend (Aelfric) was on the left wing fighting against some Normans from Germany! He said it was the greatest reenactment he's every been involved in,im definetly going to go down next year,it sounds like a great day out! Here's some shots he took from the event. A shot of the Battle.
  5. Is that title available on Amazon US?Amazon UK dont have it in stock .
  6. Thank you everybody,i had a great day yesterday but i'm paying for it now! :stretcher:
  7. There is sections of the wall excavated but your right, most of it is a ditch.
  8. I think this was done purposely for historical accuracy as the legions were never uniformoly the same, there was allways a mix of equipment in use by the men, some old some new. The costumes have been this series only saving grace i feel, its good to see metal Cuirass's for a change instead of the usual yellow plastic ones the Beeb like to use for there historical drama's.
  9. Thanks guy's,should be getting gloriously drunk tonight :drunk: . LOL,thanks m8.
  10. Whats with the monsters? i was confused to spy some big fat dude with blades for hands,a ten foot tall nasty brute and the worlds ugliest Hoplite doing some fine spear work . What the hell's that?
  11. Here's a link to the Crocodile armour. This page gives a little information on the origins of Roman weaponry (brief).
  12. There's allso the Thornborough Henges in Yorkshire. Sea Henge Avebury Stone circles Vale of Mowbray Henges Arbor Low Ring of Brodgar (Orkney) Castlerigg stone circle Long meg and her daughters Stones of Stennes (Orkney) Are Henges unique to Britian?i cant find any info on European Henges/Circles.
  13. Indeed,i was glad to see some of the Hastati with the Pectorale (heart guard) armour, you dont often see them on the screen. The general mix of Infantry equipment has impressed me,the soldiers in this period wore what they could afford and tonights episode showed that well i thought. Some of the Infantry only had a Helmet and shield wearing no body Armour at all, some with the Heart guard and the odd well to do Pleb wearing chain, excellent!
  14. If you install Grabit you can download it for free . Longbow
  15. Are you patronising me Alas,i dont have enougth free time to waist it reading about Greeks, especially Spartans, who i dont particullaly admire.Nearly all of my reading time is took up with Saxon England or Roman Britain, which are the subjects i'm most interested in. I got my information on the later 'Tourist' Agoge from this 3 part documentary, whilst i know documentary's are not the best source for information its all the time i'm willing to put into the subject i'm afraid,i'm just not that interested.I only watched it because it was the only history documentary i could find to download on Grabit. I'll bow to your superior knowledge (and your book). :notworthy:
  16. Arable that has been "opened up" and left in a state of disorder- topsoil having been moved across site, a good example is where the poppies flourish when earth is heaped up randomly during road building. Not a type of Psychotic Soil profile. Its allso the reason we wear Poppies as remembrance to our war dead (In Britain anyway, not sure about the rest of the world) once a year.Poppies grow all over battle fields (Somme, etc) because of the disturbance the Artillery caused to the top soil. L
  17. I know what the Agoge was, what im trying to say is by the time of Augustus the Agoge didnt exist in its former form.It wasnt a training school for boys from the age of seven to adulthood anymore,it was a recreation of rights of passage what the boys went through purely to satisfy Roman tourists. The Romans didnt watch the boys training for years and years, they watched them being punished to recreat the trials of the Agoge what the famous Spartan warriors went through many, many years before, hence the whipping. Longbow
  18. Wasnt the Agoge just a tourist attraction by this time?a Roman Amphitheatre was built at Sparta at the time of Augustus to accomodate all the Roman tourists to the site. The Romans would watch the competetive dances and religius ceremony's the Spartans were famous for in the theatre and allso watch young boys being whipped (sometimes to death) in the Artemis Orthia! The whipping was supposed to represeant the rights of passage the boys went through in the Agoge. I allways thought Sparta was a theme park for the sado tourists, long before the Christian emperors were on the scene. Longbow
  19. The statue we have today is a Roman marble copy of a Bronze which formed part of a group (pictured in the above post). The Bronze's were erected at Pergamon by Attalos to commemorate his victory over the Celts of Asia minor, the Galatae. The statue is one of my favourites allthough its slightly stereo typical 'Celtic',a big strong naked barbarian with his lime washed hair. How many Galatians actually looked like him?The earliest representations of Armoured 'Celts' are on reliefs on the temple of Athene at Pergamon, there descriptions are identical to the armour shown on the statue at Vacheres in Gaul,he looks very Roman. Gallic nobleman of Vacheres.
  20. Thats a shame,i would of liked to know what the frugal Spartan's favourite staple foot taisted like,if i had the courage to try it . I like Pease pudding on toasted bread with Ham and black pepper, but i wouldnt let my dog eat a Saveloy, horrible paisty muck!yuk... Ever tried White pudding Pertinax?i've never had the pleasure myself and i dont think i want to,it looks too unapertising to me.And there's no Blood in it!Bah... Longbow
  21. I wasnt aware Big Ben was considered one of the wonders of the modern world,Big Ben is the thirteen ton bell in the clock tower of the Parliment building.Who could consider a rather large but none the less still only a bell, a wonder of the world when the Millau bridge isnt even on the list?
  22. Black pudding taist's delicious but you have to get a nice one, some of the cheaper variety's are bloody awful .Its a must on a traditional English fried breakfast but i'll eat it any chance i get,my favourite snack is a Black pudding sandwich . Do you have a recipe for Spartan Black soup Pertinax?i understand that was made with Piggies blood, sounds lovely . Longbow.
