Hi all, there was a documentary on bbc about torture,Torturers from all over the world were interviewed and what was most disturbing i found was that nearly all of these men,who i assumed would be barbaric animals were actually quite normal. Not one of them felt guilty about what they had done and most of them were proud of it.This got me to thinking about the morrality issues discussed resently, life was cheap 2000 years ago and it still is now, maybe our governments dont kill entire citys now but they still kill individuals who are a threat to there state (and a lot of the time people who are no threat at all).I dont think were much different to the average person in ancient Rome, just its been scaled down more but still has the same effect.L

Hi all, has any one read anything by Ross Leckie?i got Scipio today and it looks pretty good, heres the "Praelectio" This is the fictional memoir of Scipio Africanus (236-182BC),born Publius Cornelius Scipio. The "Africanus" was an honorific, awarded him for conquering Africa in general, though he didnt, and the Carthaginian general Hannibal (247-182BC)which,at the African battle of Zama in 202BC,he did. It was under Scipios leadership, actual or assumed, that Rome mastered the world.A world long ago,and a smaller one,but one which has for better or for worse, formed ours.It was in Scipios time, after the sack of Syracuse in 211BC,that the Romans began to absorb the culture of ancient Greece. To that synthesis we owe our laws, our art,our science, our architecture and out literature, much of our language and system of government and the best-and some of the worst-of what we are. As was in fact becoming customary at the time,i give fiction a secretary to Scipio,an amanuensis. His name is Boster, and if he ever lived,he had served Hannibal before Scipio.Scipio is something of a mirror to Hannibal, because his life and that of Scipio are remarkable the same, and both men died in the same year.

The Battle of Crecy took place on the 26th of August, 1346 in northeren France and is commonly known as a/the battle which ended heavy chivalry. Outnumbered 12,000 to 35,000, Edward III took up a defensive position on a hill and waited for the French under Phillip IV to engage him. Despite their inferior numbers, The Welsh longbowmen both outranged and outfired the French crossbowers who were pinned down and thrown into confusion and panic. Phillip then ordered a full cavalry charge but Edward had anticipated this and prior to battle had constructed pits, trenches and spiked defences (caltrops) to disrupt and cripple the French horse. The Longbowmen all the while continued to inflict enormous casualties whilst the footmen effortlessly repelled all that evaded their defences. The result was a humiliating defeat for Phillip with 15,000 killed and many more wounded. The English estimated their dead at 200. Crecy is my favorite battle, after reading about it i went out and got myself a longbow and have been doing archery ever since. L

hi all,i was researching my home town history and i was quite shocked at some of the info that came up.heres a brief history of were i live. Before the Romans came the land around here was the territory of the Brigante tribe and this area was thickly forrested.Hartlepool forrest is still recorded in the 13th century,Anglo Saxon name for hartlepool was Heret eu meaning stag island (town crest is a stag)Hereteu was later known as Hart or Hartness, with the word pool added to distinguish the coastal headland town. In 640 AD the Anglo Saxon monastry was founded by st.Aiden, its first Abbess was an Irish princess named Hieu. The monastry was destroyed by the Danes in the 9th century. On the site of the destroyed monastry the present church stands still (st hildas) was built in the 13th century by the Normans De Brus. The town was fortified by Robert the Bruce I,grandfather of the famous scottish king. The Bruces accuired the town after the norman conquest, allthough the bishops of Durham allso had a claim. Some parts of Hartlepool's town wall date from the 14th century including the historic Sandwell Gate which can still be seen. Here the wall is eight feet three inches thick. And it needed to be for the place was regulary raided by the scots,One notable Scottish raid on Hartlepool occured in 1315, the year after King Edward I had been defeated by King Robert the Bruce at the Battle of Bannockburn. Robert the Bruce may have had a particular grudge against Hartlepool as it was the place to which the English King Edward had fled following the battle. Furthermore Robert the Bruce had once been the owner of Hartlepool, but it was confiscated from him by the English, when he was enthroned as King of the Scots. In medieval times the town was an important trading port, Such was its importance that it regularly attracted pirates who hampered the trade of ports like Hartlepool and Whitby. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries Hartlepool was recognised for its strategic importance during rebellions and in times of religous conflict. In the conflicts of the sixteenth century for example its significance was recognised by all sides as a potential landing place for the enemy. At the Siege of Dunbar in 1650 it was said that the French had come into the possession of a detailed map of Hartlepool and hoped to set men ashore to fortify the place as a base for seizing the whole of northern England. In August 1561 Hartlepool was again asked to remain vigilant when the activities of Mary Queen of Scots came under close scrutiny. The Hartlepudlians were advised to keep a watch out for foreign ships entering the town. Eight years later during the Rising of the North in 1569 the Spanish ambassador had instructed northern rebels to capture Hartlepool in order that the Duke of Alva might land troops from the Netherlands to lend their support. In the following century Hartlepool was occupied by the Scots during the Civil War. During the Dutch Wars (1644-67) a report and map of the place was drawn up because vessels pursued by the Dutch frequently took refuge here. Nothing of much note seems to have happened after that, oohhh yeah, some people found a poor monkey washed up on the beach and they set up a gallows and hung the little bloke, thinking he was a french spy.lol easy mistake to make Thats basically the history of my home town,i know its not exactly Rome but its interesting stuff. Thx L

The only good thing about this film is its set in the Dark Ages, which is were it should be.Not the Medieval story wrote in Victorian times.L
-
Gladiator had a good script and was well acted, the set designs were good and the CGI work recreating Rome was breathtaking.Only problem is,its historically dyslexic. L
-
I didnt like it at all, thought the acting was bad the costumes terrible and it had a very poor script.Stellan skarsgard was good as Cerdic but overall a very poor attempt at recreating the Arthur legend. L

Hi there,i know that Saxon shields (willow board with leather coverings) will break apart after three good whacks with a sword. My question is how long would a roman shield last, would the soldiers have spare shields passed to the front rank?would a soldier with a broken shield pull back and be replaced?this would have to be done pretty quickly, before the celts could get in the gap and causing havoc in the ranks.Or would he just carry on with his gladius and hope for the best? any ideas. thx L
