Why Romans Didn't Charge
longbow replied to caldrail's topic in Gloria Exercitus - 'Glory of the Army'
Medieval Conrois (20-30 mounted sargeants) had a lot of advantage's what there Roman counterparts didnt have, stirrups and a crouched lance can make a lot of difference. But even so,Infantry will stop them,Caltrops and pitts will brake a Conroi up beautifully and the horses what dont snap a leg can be easily killed with a Swallowtail or two through the chest.Once you've got the mounted soldier off his Horse,be it mounted sargeant of even a Knight (very rare on the battlefield) he's knackered without his nagg, last thing he see's will be a lot of Bollock and Rondel daggers . Play nicely you two! Longbow -
Why Romans Didn't Charge
longbow replied to caldrail's topic in Gloria Exercitus - 'Glory of the Army'
Not the case in the middleage, during England HYW with France the French Horses were rutinely targeted, they had a arrow heads designed for bleeding horses out.I allways figured the Plumbatae would be a good weapon for stopping a horse, one or two of those darts into a horses chest will topple him. Type7 for chain maile Type6 for poaching (not for cutting rigging ) type10 Bodkin for armour piercing Type 14c Swallowtail for Horses (14D is a bit bigger) Fire Basket (not easy to light a arrow) type1 Broadhead for people. -
What was the Gladius designed to do?
longbow replied to Conan's topic in Gloria Exercitus - 'Glory of the Army'
The kinetic energy of such a blow would probably be fatal to the legionnaire behind the Segmentata plates, projectiles dont have to penetrate to be fatal.A Legionnaire didnt wear much padding behind his armour, with no jack to help absorb some of the energy the force would break his bones, maybe rupture the important bits inside. Has any tests been done on Balista/Scorpion Bows? can they be accuratly recreated today with the same materials as was used by the Romans? I know a accurate medieval WarBow replica can produce 110kj of force on impact, with the correct type of Arrow and point, thats more than enough to kill a man.I imagine a Balista can produce a lot more energy than a hand drawn bow,but i have no info on Balistas,i just presunme there more powerful. -

i love those old place names Butts lane must of been close or on a Archery Butt,a medieval shooting range for Archery training. -
I've been trying to find info on the Saxon King who had the Byzantine gold crosses in his grave (and plenty of wine urns),but for the life of me i cant rememeber his name . Calling a Roundhouse a thatched hut is a bit simplistic dont you think? Thatch is a good material to use for roofs, thatch today will last for thirty years before it needs replacing.

An ordinary Brit is someone who a Roman would probably consider a slave,or at best a serf! The wonders of a tiled roof. how did the animals suddenly get healthy, did the romans change the grass . Theatre's and baths were erected for the Roman occupiers, how does that add 'culture' to the British? did the south African's let the natives into there cinema's in the 70's etc? I have no doubt, but i dont think the place a shinning example of civilisation before the Romans left, even if they did bring (for themselves) tiled roofs and mosaic floors.

Did the ordinary people of Britain live this way?every home made from stone and tiles?i find that hard to believe, but i'm no expert!

The name will probably come from before the Danelaw existed. There was Danish settlemets all over Britain Hundreds of years before the Danelaw came about.Same goes for the Saxon's/Angles/Jutes who came over, there was no sudden urge to migrate and invade it happened over hundreds of years.

Can you give us some examples Western? Sorry to sound so demanding but I'm really getting off on this fascinating topic and thirsting for more knowledge. Thx We say'Aye' for yes and 'Howay' for come on (lets go),Gan means 'Go' etc..I'm not sure if there old Norse words or just the region dialect.we call small children 'berns' that's a Norse word,Arse! comes from the word Ars,meaning rump/backside .Dale comes from the word Dalur, which is a Valley.Flags (flagstones) comes from the Norse Flaga,Reckon is from Reikna meaning to ponder/think,Acre comes from Akr,an Acre is 4800 square yds of land. There's many, many more.....

Hi Lost Warrior, nice Bow you have there! In England we call those Bows FlatBows because our Longbows (Elb) have a specific design to stick too.A English Butt Bow (Victorian style for hunting) is shaped like a D with the rounded part being the belly,it has no built up riser (handle) but the handle area can bulge out a little.Only the limbs are working on these types of Bows same as your Bow,the handle area is stiff and doesnt bend.A Horn arrow pass may be used but not allways so,the handle area is allso covered with a grip usually leather. The Nocks have to be made of Horn, historically Cow was used but today Buffalo Horn from India is most common. What types of wood are in your Bow?can you give us the specs? Whats its length Nock to Nock, whats the draw weight, what length is it tillered to,what size arrows are you using? I love talking Bows . The English WarBow is not to be confused with the English lonbow,Longbows or Butt Bows were designed by the Victorians for target shooting not for Wars. The Bows used during the wars were a different design shot in a different style and much more deadly.WarBows have no handles and no stiff area, they bend full cumpass which gives a lot more power. My WarBow is 77" Nock to Nock 75lb at a 32" draw, the 32"draw is important for WarBows,32" is past your ear making your aiming a instinct and not a sight as you do with the victorian 28" draw to a anchor point on the face, usually the chin or cheekbone. My Bow was made by a English Bowyer called Steve Stratton who's one of the best Bowyers in the world at making military spec WarBows, but there is a couple of excellent Bowyers in America who are now making EWB's,i can get you deatails if you want one LW? Here's a pic of it,its a laminate made from Hickory, lemonwood and greenheart with white Cowhorn Nocks. The hand area, the cross is the arrow mark. Size comparison with a Hungarian HorseBow (which is a joy to shoot!) Arrows,32" cedar shaft with 7.5" goose feather fletchings and a steel field point (making a new batch now with some armour piercing heads :2guns:). Longbow.

What evil regimes (real or fictional) do you most dislike?
longbow replied to a topic in Hora Postilla Thermae
The Star Wars Republic Rebels, there just a bunch of Terrorists Robert the Bruce was excommunicated for killing his rival to the Scottish throne,John 'the red' comyn in the Greyfriars Church Dumfries,Scotland 1306. When Edward Longshanks was ill the Bruce and Comyn saw there chance of getting a independent country,It was impossible to get it when Longshanks was still alive but his son was a weaker creature. The two men made a deal with each other,"Give me your lands and you shall be King or i'll give you my lands and i'll be King",Comyn choose to take the Bruce's Lands so Robert was supposed to get the throne. But Longshanks recovered from his Illness and went about his Scottish affairs in his usual manner. With Longshanks recovery Comyn got nervous, very nervous,he told Longshanks about the deal he and the Bruce had made but Longshanks suspicious to the last waited to see the documentary evidence from Scotland. When the documents arrived he invited the Bruce to his English court for a Banquet,he treated him well hiding his true intentions to chop him up into little bits but at the banquet was a old friend of the Bruce, the Earl of Gloucester. The earl sent the Bruce a gift of a set of silver Spurs, the Bruce took the hint and immediatly fled back to Scotland where he killed John 'the red' Comyn in the Church. -
Poor Guido,he's been vilified all these years when the main conspirator was Robert Gatesby who's no ones heard off! The conspirators plot to over throw the King and install his daughter as a Catholic monarch was wrong, but James I was a dog of a man and he deserved to be killed in my opinion. When the torturers asked Guy why he did it, he said "To blow the Scots back into Scotland" Then they put him on the rack and used the hot Irons on him and he soon gave up the other plotters (who wouldnt?) .
