  2. First programme was shown tonight, its running for the rest of the week.Tonights programme started of the digs at the major sites and tomorrows show is going to concentrate on life in the Army. Chichester finds include wine vessels the top of a Legionaries helmet some neck segmenta and a sword scabbard dating from 10bc,this hardly supports a earlier invasion theory. Mine unfortunatly the site of the Mine was so heavily polluted that its unsafe to work(arsenic is a bi- product of Lead smelting) .In the top soil they found evidence of Religuse activity and tiles from a bath house?i wouldnt of thought the miners had a bath house so there must of been high status people living in the vicinity of the mine. Romanised celtic site A Celtic site with evidence of weapon production, finds include spear points and knives and a Roman coin minting press. There was a Roundhouse a timber Roman villa with a mosaic floor(yellow/blue and purple) when they built the villa they allso filled the defensive ditch in around the site. Annatolian wall evidence on this site was a Roundhouse ,roman foodstuffs(grapes/wheat) the Archeoligists were hinting at a peacefull coexistence between the locals and the Romans. Roman fort in Wales A huge complex which consists of two forts, the earlier one is dated at 50AD and the later at 80AD,the finds are Spanish amphora gaming pieces cremation pits and some Malvernian ware. There was allso a large local population living outside the Roman fort walls, another peacefull co existence. Heres a list of the Dig sites Big Roman dig
  3. Couldnt Ceasers invasion account for this?he must of lost some equipment/weapons when he tried it on. Allso, didnt the Gauls hire British Celts as mercenary's?they could of brought the weapons back from Gaul.I suppose it depends on the size of the finds. L
  4. Pyrrhus of Epiros, who was avery capable commander fought against the Romans when he aided the Greek city of Tarentum,he won the 3 battles but at such a cost to lives he had to withdraw back to Greece.Do you think these early battles helped the Romans become the military power they were?Did the Romans learn from there enemys tactics and copy or modify them to suit there own troops? L
  5. Heres a good page what pretty much sums up the Roman military system L
  6. Im going to try and find a download of it somewhere,i hate missing stuff like this
  7. When i started reading McCulloughs Rome series i really didnt like it,her writing style isnt what your used to in Historical fiction, but i found the more i read the more i enjoyed it. Hope your novels as good Skarr, look forward to reading it L
  8. I bet that went down well with the Legionaries Centurions should allways be Veterans IMHO,i would of thought political appointments woud be Tribunes, after all the centurions were in the thick of the action. L
  9. What would the Legionaries use to make camp fires etc? Im thinking they would use a steel and flint technique but not sure Anyone got any ideas? thx L
  10. I thought it did start in 38,when the Germans invaded Poland I know the Brits declared war in 39. I,ve been looking forward to this programme for a while now and i agree with what tony says,i love it when a biggy like this happens. Big Roman dig Click on the Game on the right of the page,i beat jupiter 2-1
  11. Nice work Do you do any models from History? I have some Metal Crusaders and such, the kids are allways trying to pinch them
  12. The origin of the standard seems to have been a handful of grass gathered and tied to the head of a lance, on trajens column there is a standard surmounted by an 'aries' a ram,it was emblematic of siege operations. L me too,Lol
  13. Did the Celts really have warriors who hurled Heads at the enemy?i mean, instead of a Javalin Anyone have any info on these fellas? thx L
  14. I watched the tv programme about this dig last week,The King was one of the first Christian Kings but his two sons were very pagan. On his eyes he had two foil crosses, the only ones ever found in Britain(there common around the Easten countrys)But because his Pagan sons didnt believe in the new God, there Fathers tomb was allso stacked with his worldly goods(his war gear and even some objects from Byzantiam),a very unchristian thing to do. L King of Bling
  15. The death penalty for treason was still in use as late as the 1950s,in Great Britain at least.
  16. Would a Centurion really be a new recruit? I thought the Centurions would only be Veteran soldiers who served at least a couple of years as Legionares. L
  17. The republican is reputed by the historian Pliny the elder to have had five standards, an eagle, a wolf, a Minotaur, a horse and a boar. Marius made the eagle supreme because of its close associations with Jupiter, and the remainder were relegated or abolished. I like the Draco standards. The sound they make is really creepy,i imagine they would of scared the hell out the locals. L
  18. Is that why some were buried with these skull caps?
  19. I was thinking around the time of the British invasion,General Plautius,s troops. thx all L Would that land be in Italy?or wherever the legionare came from?or would it be where he was last posted? Thx
  20. Legionares signed up for 25 years with the Legions, how many of these men would of actually served the full term?Im thinking not many would make it,if the enemy didnt get you, the rigours of campaigning certainly would.Any one got any ideas? Allso,if a Legionare did serve his full term what type of pension would he receive? thanks
