  1. One problem i have with this theory is the dates,if like me you believe Arthur was fighting against the saxon invasion then Arturius Castus would be over 300 years old.I believe Arthur was a Celtic warlord who fought with the other British chieftans against the invasion,Rome was long gone from these shores.
  2. Saveloy's are gross,i like a bit of pease pudding with thick cuts of ham, hmmm. I agree Pertinax the welk is a poor meal, too chewy. My Grandad used to eat some strange food,he allways seemed to be cooking something weird like pigs trotters or tripe.I asked him once why he liked that sort of thing and he said its what he grew up eating, and i was lucky that i'de never been hungry.I guess its because of growing up during WW2 and all the rationing that people endured.
  3. Hello Latin speakers, could one of you helpful chaps translate the Latin name of the European red squirrel for me?Thanks,Longbow Red Squirrell=Sciurus Vulgaris.
  4. Oysters are horrible its like swallowing something bad you coughed up. Snails are quite nice in garlic butter, something i would only eat when in France though.I like most sea foods (except oysters),including Octopus and squids,i grew up in a coastal town and when we were kids we would spend hours picking muscles off the rocks or hunting big fat crabs .Happy times.
  5. Didnt Gladiators live on a Barley diet?i thought the fighters ate a kinda barley gruel most of the time, but would eat meat before a match. The barley is supposed to give a certain type of harder fat, which would help stop the more serious woundsThey must of ate a lot of the stuff though, barley's quite low in fat content.
  6. Interesting page regarding sword weights This early Vikings in Ireland page might be of interest.
  7. I found this regarding the Galloglas Irish,
  8. The Claymores just a Scottish Longsword or Broadswoard, the earlier types have the cross guard facing up to the sword tip like in one of the pictures earlier. The later designs have a basket hilt,The earliest positive date for a basket hilt is 1545, from a sword found under the wreck of the Mary Rose. I've never heard of the Vikings (Viking is an activity not a tribe or people,to go viking meant to go raiding)using Claymore swords at the time of there occupation of Britain, the Claymore is a much later weapon. Viking swords Highland Claymore, blade length 56 inches,15th century. hey Germanicus,Durham isnt in Scotland you know.
  9. Why was the phalanx so imobile? The English used a kinda phalanx during the civil war and they were anything but imobile. The English used Pikemen and they were arranged in units of a couple of hundred men, they would march in line formation or form squares if cavalry were about,it only takes a couple of seconds to get into square formation and then no one can get at your backs.Infact the english were using these tactics at the time of the red coats too,a Brown Bess musket with a 3ft bayonet on the end is a kinda spear i suppose. All of the Army's parade groud marching today is based on the pikemen's drills from the civil war. So why were the Greek phalanx's so slow and cumbersome,as i understand it they only used the one tactic, which is to form a long line at the front and wait for the cavalry to get round the enemy and push them onto your sarissa's.I may be wrong though
  10. We had a cracking game against the Argies last saturday, beat them 3-1 its allways good to beat the Old enemy Did anyone see the chaos at the Turkey,Switzerland game? both sides and the phisio's etc started fighting in the tunnel FIFA probe BTW,congrats Australia, see you in Germany.

  12. I watched a programme about this on the telly just after it had happened.Dan Cruishank (British historian) had travalled to the museum to see what was going on.All the museum staff were being as unhelpful as they possibly could, saying they cany find the keys to certain rooms and when they eventually did find the keys (with the help of an American major and his troops) the ring of keys was so big it was comical ,the silly women was trying every single key in the lock until the Major got angry, took his pistol out and blew the lock off . Inside was a right tip its no wonder they wouldnt let them in,there was antiquities lying in heaps and most were broken, you could tell they had been broken when they were happasadly placed anywhere at all, and in any position.Cruishank was asking the staff if this is how they normaly store the statues etc..her reply was 'yes'. They allso found some RPG's and spent cases for the rockets, the Iraqi's had been using the museum to fire on the American troops. Dan Cruishank 'return to Baghdad'
  13. I woudnt say its dissapointing that the British Army's only got 100,000 soldiers, how many do we actually need these days?theres only 100,000 of them but there highly trained,i dont think the Army needs to be any bigger than that.

  17. 'The band' are a group from the 70's,you may of heard the song 'The weight' ,i love that song Theres a good documentery dvd by martin scorsese called 'The last waltz'. I have heard of the 'pixies' and 'joy division',Ian curtis was a troubled soul, that was good for his music but not so good for him, such a shame he killed himself at such a young age.If you like 'joy division' do you allso like 'new order'? New order
  18. I've no idea how the Romans used war dogs, if they used them at all.I have read about the saxons using them though and the saxons valued the animals highly. When the saxon horde was attacking a shieldwall they would let loose the dogs so the mutts hit the wall just before the warriors did,the dog impact created gaps in the wall the warriors could get into and thus break the shield wall easier. They were big animals, like the bullenbauser breeds (now extinct) so i suppose they could of created some confusion just before the initial impact,i dont think many of them would survive the battles though.
