  1. Hi Omoplata, As long as the questions are Roman related or at least historical or in Hora postilla Thermae's case, anything goes!! then you can ask any question you like, just search the forum and find the appropriate place to ask it, so there is really no need for a "Random Questions" thread, as any question that is asked will more than likely be answered. But still feel free to start any thread you desire!
  2. I admire the Romans total and utter self belief. The belief that they were by far the most intelligent, noble and powerful race on the planet and if anyone had the audacity to disagree then they would do everything in thier power to prove them wrong. In my opinion the Roman Empire became as powerful and long lasting as it did due to it's massive confidence in it's own abilities, and it'sstrength of will to see things through.
  3. I'm a bit late to the party as usual but what the hell!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY NN!! Hope you had a great day!
  4. I think it's a great idea, an official UNRV calendar would not only be good to own but would also be a great gift for someone too. I do remember it been suggested a few years ago but we have a lot of new members since then so maybe the idae will take off this time.
  5. Maybe you should invest in the official UNRV Roman Empire map!!http://www.unrv.com/roman-map-for-sale.php This should help you out!
  6. From what i can gather the Askumites were a major trading ally of the Roman Empire, they were heavily involved with the trading routes between India and the mediterranean and to my knowledge never went to war with the Romans. Rome never ventured that far into Africa on a military scale.
  7. Happy birthday Aurelia, hope you had a fantastic day!!
  8. A big welcome to all our new members, it's good to have you on board! Anyone with a love of Roman history will love it around here so have a look around and enjoy!!
  9. The list really is endless, there's just so much to see and do but if it's your first time then i'd start with the big hitters first, the Forum ,Palatine hill, Pantheon, colloseum etc. Then you can expand to the lesser known sites. just make sure you get your self a really good guide book and you should be ok. But what ever you do don't rush!!! Take your time and savour the beauty of every place you visit instead of trying to cram it all in!! And most of all........ENJOY!!!!
  10. HAPPY BIRTHDAY DoC!!! Hope you brought the new year in with an extra special birthday bang!!!! Cheers and a happy new year!
  11. Io Saturnalia to one and all, hope everyone is having a joyous festive period!! And I hope that Santa brought you everything that you wished for!! Have a good one UNRV 
  12. I can see where Melvadius and G of C are coming from with their comments on the Roman Britain map but I've got to admit that from a purely visual point of view a framed map Roman Britain would look pretty special on the wall along side my Roman Empire map. So for that reason it gets my vote. But Neph and Docs suggestion of the map of Rome comes a very close second!!
  13. Just a bit more info that may be of use, from the ever reliable Wikipedia An ergastulum (plural: ergastula) was a Roman building used to hold in chains dangerous slaves , or to punish other slaves. The ergastulum was usually subsurface, built as a deep, roofed pit - large enough to allow the slaves to work within it and containing narrow spaces in which they slept. They were common structures on all slave-using farms (latifundium). The etymology is disputed between two possible Greek roots 'ergasterios' (workshop) and 'ergastylos' (pillar to which slaves were tethered). The ergastulum was made illegal during the reign of Hadrian. The term is also used to describe any small Roman prison.
  14. I guess I'm a bit late for this one but I'll wish you a belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY anyway!! Hope you had a good day mate!
  15. Nice review GhostofClayton, I've had the Breeze and Dobson book for a good few years now, it's such an excellent book on the wall that I've never felt the need to buy another book on the subject that is so thoroughly covered in that B &D's book. But I like the sound of the book you reviewed so I'll keep my eye's open for it. Cheers.
  16. Happy Birthday Neph!! Hope you have a great day!!
  17. No mention of Adobe for me either! The site seems to be running pretty smoothly now.
  18. The Rajput warrior had some serious weaponry going on though!! Must have been a pretty formidable opponent! Plus apparently the Roman Centurion regularly fought with a pick axe?????? The latest installment of this show pits the Somali Pirates against the Medellin Cartel !!!!...........Genius!
  19. Its probably Hadrian's Wall for me, I come into contact with the Wall quite a lot due to my regular ventures to Scotland and back and when ever I've got a bit of spare time I'll make a little detour to the site of any remains and just have a little wander about for half hour or so. It's good to get a little Roman fix to break up the day!!
  20. Great post Centurion Valerius, very interesting article, I wonder if Gaius Appuleius Diocles was as big a celebrity as our own David Beckham?? I can just see him posing in a loin cloth with his current squeeze draped across him in the ancient Roman celebrity mag ....Salve!... It also ties in nicely with the book I'm currently reading, The Legates Daughter by Wallace Breem, where the main protagonists is the son of the most famous charioteer in Rome.
  21. Gotta agree with you Russ. This show should not be taken seriously, at the endof the day it's just a bit of fun, entertainment based on ancient warfare, that is it! Laugh at it and enjoy it! It is on Bravo after all!!
  22. The same thing has happened in the Imperium Romanurum forum. All the posts are dated "yesterday at 10:39" Infat after a second look around, all the forums seem to be doing the same thing, every posts is dated the same as the last entry??
  23. I wouldn't mind having a chat with crazy old "Little Boots" just to see if he really was mad as a box of frogs, or just had a really wicked sense of humour?? Who knows maybe he'd even let me have a trot around on Incitatus? Riding around the forum on the back of a Consul, now that would be fun wouldn't it!!!
  24. I've just seen a trailer for it, and it looks pretty good but then again that's what trailers are for though aren't they!!! I'll still give it a go though, anything historical is good by me!!
  25. Hey gilius, This website should be of interest to you, it gives you alphabetical and chronological lists of all the Legions.......... The Roman Legions
