  3. Over here in blighty the daffodils are in full bloom and the sun is shining although there's still a chill in the air, summer is on it's way ...... hooray!
  4. Seems like a bit of rhetoric. I praise him while I damn him. It does seem a bit two-faced doesn't it? Maybe deep down inside Cicero was a little bit jealous and fearful of Catilina, he was everything Cicero was not, he was a strong able military man, he was charismatic, and he was a man that other men would follow, all these attributes could well take him to the top of the cursus honorum which would certainly affect Cicero's standing in the senate, so maybe Cicero used his own form of self-preservation and set out to destroy Catiline career in order to prolong his own.
  5. I personaly think that Catilina was a better man than you give him credit for, we all know the stories of his depravity and his desire to bring down the state but how much of this was really true or was it just fabrications by Cicero who hated and feared Catilina more than any other Roman, Cicero hounded Catilina's every move and had a helping hand in blocking any attempt Catilina made to further his own political career. I'm not saying the decision of rebellion that Catilina took was the right one, but he was definately forced into it, a similar situation to Caesar and the Civil War, great men, proud Romans like these two will not simply take a step down and admit defeat, they will see their beliefs out to the bitter end because in thier eyes it's the right thing to do. Years after Catilina's death even Cicero who hated him showed his respect for the man. "He had many things about him which served to allure men to the gratification of their passions; he had also many things which acted as incentives to industry and toil. The vices of lust raged in him; but at the same time he was conspicuous for great energy and military skill. Nor do I believe that there ever existed so strange a prodigy upon the earth, made up in such a manner of the most various, and different and inconsistent studies and desires." From Cicero's Pro Caelio

  10. Wasn't William Wallace(aka Braveheart) hung, drawn and quartered? Like you said, half hanged, disembowelled, beheaded then cut into four and then I believe his head was put on a pike on London Bridge and his limbs were displayed separately across North England and Scotland.
  11. I've read about something similar to that but involving horses, where the victims arms and legs are tied to four horses then the horses are whipped and proceed to run of in different directions resulting in the victims limbs being ripped off, now thats gotta make your eyes water! Also, has anybody seen the film 'The Passion Of The Christ' where he's (daren't mention his name in-case I get told off for turning this into a religious thing) flayed to within an inch of his life and then nailed to a cross...ouch!
  12. I've read most of Manfredi's work and really enjoyed it, as far as historical fiction goes I think he tells a really good entertaining story, I thought 'The Lost Legion' was an excellent adventure and if they're still going ahead with the movie version it should be very entertaining. The last book of Manfredi's I read was 'Empire Of Dragons' http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/m/valeri...ssimo-manfredi/ I also second The Augusta's shout on Manda Scott's 'Boudica' series, very entertaining.

  22. Unfortunatly Augusta I think the premiership title is now beyond your grasp ( how I hate the scumbags from Manchester ! ) March this year means to me the approach of the big 30 , does that mean I'm officially a grown up and have to act all responsible??
  23. That's pretty amazing, I find it stunning that they would go to all the trouble of building those towers just to keep track of the passing year, I wonder how long it took them, to firstly work it out and then to actually build it? One things for sure, there were some pretty clever people around 2,300 years ago.
