  1. Was Trebia and ambush or a "strategic trap" during a battle?
  2. The vegetarian diet was more or less universal during the ancient times. It wasn't just gladiators who ate just about nothing but vegetables, it was the same with the common people. Bread was the base diet and beans was very common. Meat was a delicates and for most people the best way to get some was to attend at religious ceremonies where the sacrifice was given to the attendants.
  3. I've just finished the Foundation trilogy and I, Robot, and now going on from my Isaac Asimov streak. I've just begun reading FG's The Pirates of Pompeii, and so far I enjoy it very much. it's the first book I've ever found that is settled after the Vesuvius's eruption, while I've read half a dozen books about Pompeii's last days. I've begun on Adrian Goldsworthy's "The Punic Wars." a few months back during the semester too but never had time to finish it. Probably going to chew through that one quite soon too.
  4. Do you know if there's anything about that on the net Caldrail?
  5. This isn't really purely archaeological news but I believe it's well fitting here anyway. Why did humans evolve to walk upright? Perhaps because it's just plain easier. Make that "energetically less costly," in science-speak, and you have the conclusion of researchers who are proposing a likely reason for our modern gait. Bipedalism
  6. Josephus (A hostage from the Jewish revolt in the first century AD) claim in his book, "A History of the Jewish War" 3.71 that: "The Romans are never caught unexpectedly by an enemy." Now of course we all know that ambushes did occur, the battle/slaughter in the Teutoburg forest might be the most well known example (The one you're thinking of L?), but it might give us a hint that it wasn't something that happened very often. ("As the Romans Did, second edition, A Sourcebook in Roman Social History" by J Shelton) In the book "The Punic Wars" by A.Goldsworthy it's stated that the cavalry during those wars at least, never were any good at scouting.
  7. Haha no problem Keep it up we need some fresh faces here!
  8. I reckon that they did use their cavalry for scouting the closest surroundings. From what I remember, they weren't neither very consequent nor careful about it. Interesting subject definitively going to see if I can find something more on the subject tomorrow.
  9. A 2,400-year-old golden mask that once belonged to a Thracian king was unearthed in a timber-lined tomb in southeastern Bulgaria, archaeologists said Monday. The mask, discovered over the weekend, was found in the tomb along with a solid gold ring engraved with a Greek inscription and the portrait of a bearded man. "These finds confirm the assumption that they are part of the lavish burial of a Thracian king," said Margarita Tacheva, a professor who was on the dig near the village of Topolchane, 180 miles east of the capital, Sofia. 10. Great to see you back and well!
  11. If it is, thenit's the second time Paestum been posted.
  12. This one is difficult. Actually I'm not entirely sure it's following the rules. Working on it thou.
  13. You're good! Get us another one now.
  14. Ok this one could be tricky, however there is an important clue in the picture.
  15. Oh actually uhm, I don't really know what to post. Can you give me a few hours to think about it? If anyone else want to post a picture during that time, just shoot. I've posted my share and more here
  16. Triumphant arch of Caracalla in Volubilis?
  17. Fair challenge that one, seems great! Going to start looking for it after sunset.
  18. It's correct! So fast! Easy huh? Asclepiades, no more bridges please. Oh this is going to hurt!
  19. Oh nice pic there, I like it! And woops sorry for the him I'll think about that in the future Going to work on the picture tomorrow.
  20. I thought maybe you were a Star Trek fan... but that's 'Klingon'! Haha I've heard that one before, but nope it has nothing to do what so ever with Star Trek.
  21. Yeah, difficult pictures ain't bad, we've had some that just passed away too fast. The Octagon lake's still the worst one thou Next picture hmm, do you have one Miguel? I've posted I don't know how many places here now I'm kinda running out of my favorite not too known ruins. (Edit) Oh yeah by the way Me love you long time for that link Asclepiades!
  22. Oh nice bump this one. Anyway might just as well post my nick. Nothing strange about it it's just what I've always been called by friends who're not too close. It's short for my last name Klingborg. Actually Klingan means blade too in Swedish but I've never really reflected upon that. it's just a pure fluke.
  23. The wine here is strong, Klingan soon feel how it's intoxicating him. Too much of it too fast. Damn. Who did spill on my toga *wobbels* Can't be seen like this. Klingan throws of his toga. No way I forgot my underwear. He's head rushing what shall I do? There's people everywhere, where can I hide? There is only one place that can hide me now... The atrium! Boldly Klingan runs to what in his state of mind seems like a prima caldarium and makes a head on jump into it!
  24. Yeah it was a great teamwork with Miguel who made this possible. Hope I'll get the chance to break another hard city with him soon! You guys really don't wanna know how much time I did spend looking for that bridge. Now when we've got it, how can it be this infamous? It's a masterpiece. And by the way, ASCLEPIADES would you please give us some information about it? I would love to hear the whole story.
