  1. Yes I believe so, and the emergence of the central american land bridge meant that northern species (including us) could migrate southward and force the local quirky animals into retirement. There's a point to this that hasn't been highlighted. The landbridge across the Bering Strait was useful for us to occupy the north american continent, but I notice that horses and camels left by the same route. I wonder why? We come in they get out sounds like great fun Why doesn't any camel want to stay at the north American party with us?
  2. Very very interesting. I've never heard that before either. IIRC crucified people were even denied proper burials, let alone expensive ones. This is actually an old chestnut. It has actually been pointed out in the past by people like Haim Cohn, etc. Crucifixion was meted out for sedition or armed rebellion and as such the victim was denied burial as a part of his punishment. That coupled with the absolute horror with which Jews regarded the handling of bodies "hanging on a tree" makes the likelihood that the tomb belongs to a crucified Jesus rather improbable. Exactly my point! Thanks for the elaboration
  3. The paper an also be found here in a word .doc. If you're not interested in the introduction I suggest you skip down to the discussion. I hope that everyone will enjoy the reading! Introduction, intention and objective I have chosen to write this paper on the colonisation of the Mediterranean during antiquity. This is because I argue that this is a both important and interesting phases of the areas development. As the subject stretch over both a considerable area and time frame it is my intention and objective not to write a deeper analysis of the subject but to give the reader a basic view over the colonisations during this period. These will later in the paper be compared in a summery and in the very end in a conclusion for a closer look on the reasons behind the expansion and colonisation. I will also attempt to redefine the word colonisation to fit the period, which I
  4. By that standard, nothing in ancient history will ever impress you. Well I wouldn't consider the tomb of Jesus the norm. Normally historians don't draw this kind of conclusions. If they find a grave with the inscription "Here lies (I can't remember the Latin term right now) A. Flavius Niger" I'll buy it any day. But how many fakes do you think there would be for Jesus? How much fame would anyone who found the real grave get? How tempting would it be to make the results look a little better? How much would the bones of Jesus be worth? How much would the Churches pay to destroy them if they still exist? I would demand a lot before believing that any specific tomb was found. I would demand one hell of a a lot more for Jesus, Mohamed, Buddha, Abraham or any other religious leader.
  5. Find the picture you want to use on your computer. Make sure it's less then 1 mb. Go to this site: www.imageshack.us and upload it. This will give you an external url for the image (Look at the bottom of the page), it'll look something like this: http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/2724/luciatogaoe6.jpg Copy it. Continue by going to your control panel --> Edit Avatar Settings Now use the "Enter a URL to an online avatar image" and paste the link. Update Avatar.
  6. I can see myself in that fiction head-ace place too Doc. Not counting the summer holidays, it's almost 2 years since I read anything but what could be useful for my education. Anyway among the favorites are: Isaac Asimov Tolkien Con Iggulden Jules Verne Anyway I will now have to pick up my sister at the bus, I will be back for more later.
  7. M. Demetrius I well aware of the fact that Jesus died in the 30s AD not 1 BC, thank you very much. It was meant as a general approximation beacuse we do not know how old the tomb that we are "looking for" is. As you stated yourself, still some tombs are known to whom they originally belonged, they're very very old. Jesus clan tomb could be potentially hundreds of years older. Or possibly he never were even laid in a tomb even as they claim in the bible? We have no idea. We do know however that crucified people usually didn't get very expansive funerals. Second: My point was that out of the population (of whom they all in the end died), to find one tomb is far worse then finding a needle in a haystack. Maybe we could stumble on it, but finding it by searching? Essentially impossible. Until I have rock hard solid evidence in my own hand I stand unimpressed.
  8. Zero. It was reported to have been destroyed during the Muslim occupation sometime around the end of the First Millennium. I no longer have the reference work that cited the date and names. These same kinds of defacements of tombs and ancient monuments are happening today, too. Reported destroyed or not is beside the point. To find one specific tomb from around 1 BC is however not.
  9. This title reminds me of the iron age Mickey Mouse and Hobbit found.
  10. WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Scientists in Uruguay have found the fossil remains of a 2,000 pound (1,000 kg) rodent that lived 2 million to 4 million years ago -- the largest rodent ever found. The giant creature probably ate soft food such as fruit or tender plants, Andres Rinderknecht and Ernesto Blanco of the National Museum of Natural History in Montevideo reported on Wednesday. "We report the discovery of an exceptionally well preserved fossil skull of a new species of rodent, by far the largest ever recorded," they wrote in a report in Britain's Proceedings of the Royal Society. "Rodents are a very successful group of mammals living almost worldwide and with small body masses (generally less than 1 kg or 2.2 pounds)," they wrote. Read more here.
  11. It would seem like you've found a place on the net where you''ll fit right in History geeks we all are here! Welcome!
  12. Interesting but I do wonder if this really is the last on Mona Lisa's identity. It's one of those subjects that seems to be resurrected over and over again.
  13. I rest my case and trust your experience in the matter since mine is after just one or two episodes.
  14. From what little I've seen of "Time team" I've had the impression that they are stressed, non thorough populist archaeologists, destroying good evidence in their path, rushing excavations that would have needed time. Is this correct?
  15. Yes he's completely nuts and we like it!

  16. This is inspired by Faustus latest photo album.. It's really great! One of the most striking architectural traits of the Parthenon may also be one of the most difficult to notice. When facing the building it
  17. Wow this was bumped, anyway, the problem with all those who's influential, who's the most important threads are that all the people listed build on each others achievements. Of all the Romans listed none of them would have have been influential at all without Scipio who's also listed. Therefor should Scipio be the most influential by logic. Now I guess that you all see whats wrong with it... Potentially you could have a bloody dinosaur on the top of the chain. Anyway I was curious on the other votes so I threw mine on Constantine the Great. Christianity had a slight leap forward with him so to speak.
  18. It should also be taken into consideration how much more less densely the continent were populated. I believe that conflicts by this time were rather unusually and mostly not lethal. To strengthen this point you can notice that the first written campaigns in Mesopotamia that we know of from cuneiform tablets. They are describes as enormous and massive, and yet when we stumble upon the real number later into the text we find that they were no more then 40 ish. Now, those chaps had far larger resources for warfare and armed conflict yet this is the scale needed.
  19. Thanks lol, I do like soft rock but that's just about it. People say you can't really like hip hop and rock but I don't know, it seems not to be so for Klingan. Well my selection of hip hop is very small, not more then 10 songs probably. The again I don't have much more then 30 rock songs I like either.
  20. The kind of music I listen to are only whispered in fear. (and not represented on the list) Serious though it's rather spread, I listen to almost anything as logn as I like the individual song, from techno to rap.
  21. Brittney Spears would be some nice 65+ points (I have no idea about how old she is) Ariel Sharon should be a good bet. Maybe you should add a Hamas leader? They tend to jump before their time.
