  1. Well I received a scholarship a while ago that will allow me to travel to Rome for almost two and a half month. As I'm leaving at next Thursday (26/3) would I just like you guys to know that there is a certain risk that I won't have internet access as normally for quite some time which would mean very limited posting while on the other hand, with any luck, I'll be able to post a lot of beautiful pictures and notes on what I'm doing there. In case of me being in "bad luck" (How could Rome ever mean bad luck?), see you guys in 3 months 8th of June! Take care!
  2. What page are you referring too (Out of curiosity)? I happen to have the book at home and can't find anything similar after a (very) quick look. From what I know would a channel with a sidewalk for inspections be normal, and the channel would gradually be filled with calcium (and other) deposits in a up side down triangular shape. Here it almost looks like it's filled from the top down, hence the curious shape.
  3. I would love to read that book! Thanks for the post Viggen!
  4. I have worked quite a deal with roman water technology and I look forward to reading a proper report on this find. The shape of the tunnel is very curious and not very roman like while the calculations on how much water it would supply the final destination with is reasonable.

I finished my Magisters exam (Swedish version of a masters) about a month ago, right now I'm just writing a little and killing time as I'm going to Rome on a scholarship the 27th of March -7th of June. And I'm desperately looking for a way to get phd which is all but impossible in Sweden

This was rather refreshing after the last 2 hours of reading about Roman shepherding How close to a degree are you now by the way? Ps. XXI, just look at my cat
  7. I cannot confirm your last notion but it would surely be interesting to consult an expert! The thought is intriguing.
  8. I guess that you are referring to 1st century bc pieces CN?
  9. R. Ling's Pompeii: Life, death and afterlife. I will try to write a short review on it! Edit: Next book finished, B. Santillo Frizell's 'Pastorala landskap' (Rural landscapes) about Roman shepherding. I finally found time to catch up on some books as my essay now is finished.
  10. Masters of Art. I finally finished my degree; I've now got a Magister (The Swedish version of a masters). As I should be really happy, I'm not cause I can't figure out what to do now. There is no possibility to get a Phd in Sweden, I'm trying to get something in the UK, but it's difficult even with good contacts there. The USA/Canada would be great too but as I don't even know anyone there...l don't even know where to start. I can't get a job as it is, I tried museums but a masters degree isn't enough even for guiding during the summer (Something that I'm more then able to do) and to work at excavations they ask me to pay them - it
  11. I finished my masters in classical history a few weeks ago and I can't get neither a phd nor even a job over the summer. Right now following my heart feels so stupid, I should have studied engineering. What the heck should someone with degree in the Beatles do if I can't anything in a serious business?
  12. Galen On the Natural Faculties, book I, II & III
  13. Another great year with UNRV have passed! Thanks a lot guys
  14. I prefer to see the sites in person and then remind myself by looking at the details in photos.
  15. I must say that I enjoy this game very much, as it is fun and don't take too much of my time. I would recommend it to any member on these boards!
  16. Ah ancient toilets, I have stumbled on them several times the last year while researching the urban Roman water distribution. Anyway the sponge is all but unknown to us, it was never a favourite subject in ancient times by some reason. However we believe that it is likely that they were common at public latrines and probably publicly shared in such facilities. Almost all public latrines had a little channel in front of the seats that is assumed to be where these sponges (on sticks) were "cleaned". On sources; I've actually only found two sources on the use (Seneca Ep. II 70.27 & (Martialis XII 48.7). That you have found a reference to such a sponge in John (19:21) makes it three and I tell you, some major sharks in the ancient water would probably love to get to know this (as A. Wilson). Seneca: "For example, there was lately in a training-school for wild-beast gladiators a German, who was making ready for the morning exhibition; he withdrew in order to relieve himself, - the only thing which he was allowed to do in secret and without the presence of a guard. While so engaged, he seized the stick of wood, tipped with a sponge, which was devoted to the vilest uses, and stuffed it, just as it was, down his throat; thus he blocked up his windpipe, and choked" (Loeb) Martialis: "Yet your dinner is a handsome one, I admit, most handsome, but to-morrow nothing of it will remain; nay, this very day, in fact this very moment, there is nothing of it but what a common sponge at the end of a mop-stick, or a famished dog, or any street convenience can take away." (Bohn's Classical Library (1897))
  17. Would it be possible to plots in the market for sale/hire? (And merchant ships, soldiers and slaves as well?) I think that could help the game gain a rhythm if you need to invest now and then. A second suggestion would be to allow natural hazards affect these things (random income due to, illnesses, flooding, bad rain, crop chosen etc)
  18. Haha you're welcome! Remember that now you owe me one! How do I increase my income by the way?
