  1. This is amazing Neph! Absolutely stunning.
  2. Could be, I would need to get out to his villa sooner rather than later. Favonius Cornelius album here might be a good start. It's fairly frustrating that Vitruvius and the Campanian region are is so dominant in the modern literature.
  3. Very good point I guess my focus is rather narrow the problem is i have a word cap on the essay (no more than four pages) so I'm kind of tight for space lol . Would you have any other suggestions for areas i could discuss other than military expansion that would be relevant to essay? Thanks to everyone for their input so far! It will be taken to heart! Out of curiosity, what's the cap? Margins and line spacing makes all the difference in the world. Anyway I would say that Augustus campaigns after the defeat of Marcus Antonius and Cleopatra are rather insignificant compared to the other wars you have mentioner. However, you should probably mention Caesar and the civil wars however, and possibly the aftermath when he was cleansing the empire of Pompeian supporters. Would it be possible to read your paper when it's done?
  4. No licenses required, and no rules save in case of wall paintings and other sensitive materials. God no! I didn't pay for them! The thing is that I've heard from a very reliable source that the authorities charge you 55
  5. Even when the museum doesn't allow photography? How about open air sites, such as the forum Romanum, Pompeii, Tivoli, etc?
  6. Even as I'm not convinced by the approach, wars are but one part in the expansion of Rome, I feel that you should probably mention Marius campaigns if you want to focus on the military expansion. And remember that many of the early wars are legendary and not historical (As the first Samnite war) and thus has no territorial consequences.
  7. Gerasa Gwahhhh! One second before I posted.
  8. I spent the day there yesterday and I intend to return as soon as possible Are you traveling in the area around Rome at the moment?
  9. I actually don't know exactly how wide the change is, I have only very recently noticed the phenomena. However, the only exception I've found so far is Paestum, which could be explain by the back waters state of the city during the empire. (There are atrium houses being constructed there until 25 AD)
  10. I have, as you may know, been running around at a great number of Italian sites during the last 6 weeks or so and I have noticed over and over again how the upper class houses change shape somewhere around 100-200 A.D from the classical atrium/peristyle houses into a less strictly planned and heavier decorated type. What makes me curious is what's behind this change, as I can think of a number of reasons (of which none might be correct). - The influenced by the emperors palaces on the Palatine where the classical plans are lost. - A decline in the need for public manifestation as political power were constantly growing more difficult to archive by such measurements. - Loss of classical conservative values (or perhaps classical imaginative values). Any other thoughts on the matter?
  11. I've had a brief look on your album and I enjoyed it a lot and I would love got get full size copies of the shots if possible If you look at my blog (http://ancientandold.blogspot.com/) I'm sure you'll find some pictures that might interest you. Neither the Cestius pyramid or Caesar is posted yet, but they are surely to come! Thanks for uploading the pictures!
  12. Nice, but the program they use is really archaic!
  13. When I was to Herculaneum only weeks ago, I saw some children pick up pieces of a mosaic and give it to his friends. He's lucky that he's still alive no doubt. Anyway, nobody else cares, not even the kids teacher, people just don't care very much unfortunately.
  14. I'm going to see it as soon as possible. I guess that'll be when I get back to Sweden.
  15. Ah the famous Monty Python scene Always appreciated!
  16. Shouldn't is be possible (at least in theory) to date plaster? Does anyone know what ancient Egyptian plaster is made out of?
  17. Believe me I do want to play but the only thing stopping me is that I'm totally crap at it!! A hint is to take a look at the building and the surroundings. Think a little about where the nature could be from and take a moment to recall what major towns you know in that area and google for those. Unless that works take a look at wikipedia for large Roman settlements.
  18. I'm going to give everyone a few days to take a look at it before I try, it would be nice if some other people wanted to play the game as well.
  19. I believe this topic was discussed some time ago here, but it may very well be continued
  20. It is indeed, nice spotting.

    The Real Me

I must agree. I would like that actually.
  22. Indeed, it doesn't feel like that long ago.
  23. Hey thanks for the comments! Yup I walked all the way from the Circus Maximus, went into the church (I totally missed the footprint, but I familiarized myself with the Domine Quo Vadis story) and up to the Villa dei Quintili (a new favourite!) Yep the view is from the outside as I wanted to take the picture in line with the light How long were you in Rome for?
