I've found this image of a statue of Augustus someplace on the internet. It's a rather nice statue, but I don't know where it's from or what museum it's stored in. I'd like to know this because I'd like to find an image of the statue that wasn't in greyscale--I would like to see the statue in color to see its full glory. The range of depth in marble simply cannot be shown in grey. It's a wonderful statue--with the laurel wreath, the armor, and the eagle sceptre. I just wish I had a colored picture!

Penultimate release? Is there only going to be one more after this one?

Those scenes with Vorenus and Antonius were great. "That's how a Roman drinks!" Excellently done. I'm a bit surprised they didn't fast forward to 27 and see the Augustification of Octavian (ooh, neologism!) but it's okay. What killed the show for me, of course, was the lack of baby Julia. How dare they show a nobody like Antonia and not involve the great descendant of Venus and the daughter of the Emperor. Hmph! That said, I do feel really sad that the show is over. I maintain that the soapish elements of the show would have worked great for the I, Claudius era of the principate.

I liked this episode a lot better. There was almost zero reference to side plots and almost no soapishness. There was still some fanciful portrayal of characters, but it wasn't too bad at all. I actually enjoyed this one! Best of the season, in my opinion. We got to see several views of the City, including one dazzling shot of the entire thing. We saw Vorenus playing with C

I'm not going to give up watching the series, I've just reached the point where I'm disappointed in it. It still has its moments--even in the last episode--but it's losing the great focus it used to have. I used to tell people, quite happily, that it was more accurate than most historical dramas--but it might lose that accolade soon. At least the previews look interesting. The show shines when it sticks to politics, I think. Episode 8 was my favorite of last season, and so if we're going back to more of that then it could be fun. I did like the scene where Octavian threatened Antonius, after all.

Well, now Octavian gets himself married to Livia without any marriage to Scribonia. I'm very miffed, needless to say. Livia didn't look very nice either. She was very mousey and didn't have the sort of presence you might expect her to, even at that young age. And what were the writers on when they decided to have Octavian become a sado-masochist? WHAT?? The last two episodes had better be worth it, though it seems that things are going to suddenly wrap up very quickly (especially since there's not going to be a third season...)

Wasn't it his grandparents that were slaves? Perhaps I'm mistaken.

I was pleased to see Octavia marry Antonius. Thank goodness! I also like seeing M

I wouldn't mind that either, if only because it'd need at least another season to even get to Jesus's birth much less anything else about him. The dynamics of the Augustan imperial family is the sort of place where the show's soapiness would fit in perfectly. A sort of modern I, Claudius I guess.

Well, the episode wasn't entirely devoted to historical events but it didn't go too badly. The Jewish angle is still puzzling, since Judea isn't even a province yet--but it was interesting that they mentioned Herod. He'll be put in charge of Judea in a few years, after all. We did get to see a real battle this time, more or less. It's an improvement over Pharsalus.
-
Does this mean you'll be running off to play god in some uncivilized province?

I've never read anything that had direct evidence of any orgies occuring in the Republican period. There's some speculation about the doings of this mystery cult or that, but nothing solid. I think the idea that they may be over-inflated fantasies is probably the closest to the truth.

Heroes of the Republic (episode 17)
Julia C replied to Primus Pilus's topic in Rome Television Series
Actually, I was the one that missed the preview. I did manage to see the encore tonight and get the preview, and it looks very tantalizing. There was only one little bit about some war that Vorenus has to deal with, but the rest of the entire preview deals with the leadup to and the battle of Phillippi. This might be the best episode yet of the entire second season. I agree about Trebonius and Dollabella, but I can understand why they didn't include that story. It would have been a little difficult to show it without much summarizing. As for Atia--since she seems to have taken up Fulvia's role, we might see her putting the pin on Cicero's tongue after his death. -

The Augusta: Yeah, Antonius seems to be a bachelor since there's no Fulvia in site. Too bad. I guess the betrothal with Servilius Isaricus's daughter is out too. As for Julia--yeah, I know. I was speculating more as to a future season or two, if we get that far... It's my stated opinion that Julia was always a good girl! A friend of mine and I are collaborating on a bit of historical fiction that's intended to vindicate her. Of course, the historical record doesn't agree with us, but I'm sure it was all just a set up or cover for some political nonsense. I blame the Claudians. The point remains, though, that with this show's record, Julia will be positively angelic. PP: Oh, you meant Octavia. Okay, then, I understand what you mean. You had originally written Octavian/Agrippa, which perplexed me. -
Heroes of the Republic (episode 17)

I's mostly glad the minor plotlines are done. Though we'll undoubtedly see more of Vorenus and Pullo, it looks as if it'll be more relevant to current events rather than tying up loose ends from last season. Atia must surely be about to kick the bucket soon, and she needs to hurry, because Livia will be coming onto the scene in a few years. Octavian said he was thinking about marriage. I wonder if we'll see Scribonia. I hope so, though her presence is bound to be brief. My DVR failed to record the preview since the episode ran a little long. I'm hoping to catch tonight's encore to get a peek. More political mechanations would be excellent! I'm enticed. Oh, and which Agrippa/Octavian scene did you think was two modernistic? Nephele: Oh my goodness--yes, let's hope that we don't have to see Atia playing as Livilla. If it did happen, it's probable that it'd be at Octavian's instigation rather than Antonius--I can't see his character, as he's been portrayed, dropping Atia for Octavia. I really couldn't. I suppose Atia had one last role to play in this episode, and now the stage is set for her to finally die. I have been waiting for her to go for so long. Haha. Maybe that could be their reason why she never bore any of Augustus's children. She had enough dealing with T. Claudius Nero, but when it came to Augustus she decided that her secret lesbian urges must be satisfied! If they could turn Atia into a sex fiend and Octavia into a drug addict, who knows what they'll do to Livia? I'll be sure to let you know, though. On the bright side, this means that my Julia must obviously be portrayed as the paragon of morality. No scandals for her! -
Heroes of the Republic (episode 17)

The sexual content was at a minimum. Octavia was just lying down on a couch being a twit and seeing things. I particularly enjoyed Octavian dictating to the Senate and playing Cicero for a fool. That was rather nice--and it seemed that the focus of the episode was more on historical events (and the formation of triumvirate) than anything else. We saw a lot of Octavian, Agrippa, and M -
I have read his biography on Agrippina--mostly for its continual reference to Julia--and I have to say that it's excellently done. Agrippina is another figure that has been cast in a villanous shade by Robert Graves, and though she's a bit more deserving of that claim, Barrett does present a very fair and convincing portrait of her. I enjoyed reading his books on Livia and Agrippina. Since he likes controversial figures, I am really hoping he'll tackle Julia soon. The only biography on her that I know of--Julia Augusti--doesn't have anything in it of particular value. It's a great disappointment.

It is an example of the US removing European colonists from North America immediately after the Civil War. Actually, the top income brackets do if they don't have enough itemized deductions. This includes state income taxes as well. So uncommon behavior warrants the criticism of an entire group of individuals? Corporate CEOs number in the thousands, and they must be corrupt and guilty of hating the poor because some executives arrange for themselves to get ludicrous bonuses? I was unaware, Gaius Octavius, that the Great Depression was a socialist revolution. I did not know that it was caused by the workers rising up against the evil bougeoisie. All this time I thought it was a crisis of public credit following a market collapse that led to a run on the banks. Gee, was I mistaken. All those panics, too! Why, the bi-metallism crisis must have had nothing to do with the currency. The crisis of the late 1830s must've had nothing to do with the closing of the Bank of the United States, because it was really the socialists that did it. Do feel free to enlighten me. I would enjoy your demonstration that a soaring GDP is indicative of a superpower. Surely you'd mention how high China's productivity is, yes? It's really too bad that it's not sustainable, and that there's no solid consumer basis behind the growth. But that's quite all right for the armchair economists and media loudmouths, because there's a lot of money being made. Why does it matter that the majority of the country grows rice and the majority of the populace lives in poverty when they are making trillions in goods and services! I would like a better justification than a statistic, thank you. The yuan was undervalued, not overvalued. This created a balance of trade heavily favorable to the Chinese in a period where foreign investment was at its peak. Consequently, the tremendous flow of capital had sent the Chinese economy to skyrocketing--especially when it coincided with some relaxations on business by the communist r

Jackson was a scumbag on the edge of treason. He was foul-tempered and allowed personal grudges to enter into his presidential decisions. His entire ill-advised crusade against the Bank of the United States was based on a hatred he had conceived for Henry Clay. His racist dislike of the native Americans was what prompted him to ignore a ruling by the Supreme Court and perpetrate the genocidal deed known as the Indian Removal Act. He ignored John Marshall's order to cease the deportation of the Cherokee because he had conceived a dislike of the Federalists, and Marshall was the last remaining Federalist. Jackson is a thoroughly dispicable character.

Moonlapse is correct. The reason for the problem is because cookies are dated to expire at a certain date. Most sites that have features such as "log me in forever" automatically renew cookies, but apparently this site does not. So, if one has been logged in for a long enough time, the cookie will expire and the board refuses to write a new one because it thinks you're permanently logged in when you're not. This is why deleting cookies (which can be done manually, so you don't lose them all--this requires some computer skill) will solve the problem.

The EASIEST way to fix this, by far, is to simply press ctrl+F5 in your browser while on any page where you would see your avatar (just don't do it on the "upload an avatar" page!). F5 is the standard shortcut key to refresh a webpage. Ctrl+F5 tells your browser to not only refresh the page, but completely *reload* everything on that page. Your old avatar was cached in the temporary internet files folder, but ctrl+f5 will force it to check again for the change. This is much quicker and has less hassle than having to reset your entire cache. -
I can't believe I've actually read through this entire thread--I must be terrifically bored. I do, however, have a couple comments to make. It did not take Canada or Mexico or eject the European colonialists out of the Western Hemisphere.[/blockquote] I. Actually, when Napol

I am working on one, actually, as a companion piece to a friend's historical fiction on Julia. I haven't worked on it in a while, but I could dust it off and fix it up for wider dissemination.

Are people still interested in this idea? If so, I would love to contribute a biography of my namesake.
