  1. Who was in command of a Roman fort? If the fort was a small fortlet, say for an auxilia cohort or such, did the type of commander change? Would a Prefect be in charge?
  2. I have found numerous resources on the net about cuirbolli and it's worth, giving it a decent level of protection. But back to my original question - is there any evidence of Romans using it and if not, do you personally think they could have? Hollywood seems to think they did!
  3. Sorry, I mean if I was a provincial or tribesman, and not Roman - what other languages could I have spoken (and written)? Could u please note where the language comes from as well? Coptic - is that Egyptian?
  4. I'm pretty sure the legions did not use it, but I was wondering if perhaps tribunes or prefects perhaps used a muscled cuirass of hardened leather, rather than that of bronze. From my own research very few gladiators wore chest armor either.
  5. Hi, I've been trying to gather a list of possible languages available to people in the Roman world - other than Latin. This is the list so far: - Aramaic, Celtic, Dacian, Egyptian, Gallic, Germanic, Greek, Hispano-Celtic, Sarmatian, Scythian, Thracian. Are these correct? What others should be on the list? Thanks
  6. Hi - new to the forum and finding it a GREAT source of info. For research for a RPG, did Romans use hardened leather (cuirbolli) for breastplates, helemts or greaves etc, like in the Gladiator movie (Maximus' arena breastplate) or is it purely fictional? Would it be totally wrong to imagine that they could of - if they didn't of course? Frank
