  1. I agree it would be the Carthaginians but I am a bit skeptical of this. Remember that Carthage mainly traded around the Mediterranian a calm sea. The Atlantic is harsh, rugged, and nearly impossible to traverse. The Vikings had to build some of the toughest ships just to be able to stop at Iceland and move onto the new world.
  2. Whether the Middle East served a cross roads even then between India and China to the West is a good question. If they did this is almost to have effected the Roman Empire in some way.
  3. Wild guess... Hungary? Think RSVN Europe or Asia? There are currently no 3rd world countries in Europe, they are all industrialized nations. (Even Greece.) Edit: I figured out from South Vietnam. Your father was probably promised a democratic country but the Americans failed while you father served in the navy. Am I right, or crazy?
  4. Easter Sunday was yesterday for me as I go Saturday night. Now I enjoyed a nice sleep in and finally eating meat, dairy, and seafood after 40 days without being able to.
  5. Don't forget the Basques...they've laid claim that their whaling and cod-fish expeditions took them to the New World! And not forgetting the Chinese. One of the most famous examples of pseudo-history in recent years was the claim by a British sailor that a Chinese navy sailed to the Americas, New Zealand, Australia, Africa and Europe in 1421. That was because of Zheng He's fleet. He explored Australia, South Asia, and the coast of Eastern Africa although saying they reached the new world is a bit hard to believe. As record stands the Vikings were the first to North America. They called Newfoundland Vinyland growing grapes and gathering wood. There is now evidence of earthen houses and Viking metallurgy in these areas. Not to mention they scared the heck out of the natives. This should probably go the the Universum folder.
  6. I agree, you're 26 with 20 years experience! Happy Birthday Virgil!
  7. Well, I went to see 300 today and here's my two cents on the movie: 1. It doesn't snow in Sparta. Quite funny when you have an 8 year old Leonidas fighting a wolf with bitter winters on the fringes of the Mediterranean. 2. Leonidas wife was very ugly. 3. I don't understand why half the Persians were black. 4. If 300 Spartans withstood the Persian army then being outnumbered 3 to 1 should be easy. (After Thermopylae.) 5. As I said before and was stated in the movie, the Persian army was ill prepared and weak relying on sheer numbers. I liked the movie. It is of course fictionalized but nonetheless gets the point across. I guess it comes down to personal preference.
  8. Why did the Dark Ages happen after the fall of Rome? Mere coincidence or is there more to the situation.
  9. I'm going to go see the movie Saturday afternoon before Easter Sunday mass. I can't wait.
  10. Clearly after the fall of Rome, can be pointed out when Europe plummeted into the Dark Ages. The thing I don't understand is why is Rome directly linked and a benefactor of the Dark Ages? It seems that Western Europe, in particular, seemed not to have been able to keep order.
  11. My apologies, I was excluding the Byzantines, I thought is was only about them. I was talking about the Dark Ages and Renaissance in particular you may lock this.
  12. I saw the Man U vs. Roma match it was exciting. Manchester went down early a man after [insert name] made a malicious tackle on Totti. AS Roma was already up 1 slowed down the attack and Rooney, so calm, received a beautiful ball and he planted it in the back of the net. AS Roma subbed in Vucinic came in and kept sliding and scored to put them up top. Man U is more then capable of winning back home so they're not in too much trouble. BTW, why do people hit each other up on the stands a bit silly no?
  13. I came up with the idea of make a post Roman Empire Forum. Of course this is just an idea but I would like to take everyone's opinion. I know this forum is dedicated to ancient Roman history but wonder if anyone else would be interested.
  14. Cold and snow. Green Christmas; White Easter.
  15. The Romans, to my understanding, wanted to make the pilum weak and easily breakable so that the enemy would not have the oppurtunity to throw them back or use it in battle.
  16. That wink looks a lot less intimidating.
  17. Moonlapse, Antiochus of Seleuecia, Pubilius Nonius Severus, and Pantagathus my office! One of you guys gave me a two in terms of rating. LOL
  18. I used to have those crisises until I got tired, then slept. Really though don't worry about it scientists are developing new ways to save the environment while researching alternate fuel sources. Hey we messed this place up the least we can do is tidy up for our grandchildren.
  19. This is also important as Rameses the Great has been noted to have red hair, hena was not used proved throught DNA testing. Also he is the most important pharaoh of Egypt for without him Egypt would have never revived after centuries of foreign rule. I'm just curious as to how they got these strands of hair and why they want to buy hair over three thousand years old.
  20. I thought this way about this forum, and I still do.
  21. Happy Birthday Zeke! Who can ever forget that masterful essay on the Dacians? I certainly won't!
  22. LOL, heard about it. Sports analysts had a hard time saying it clearly without getting fired. I'll just show my picks here: (1) Florida vs. (2) UCLA (I think it will come down to free throw shooting and UCLA's guards are way overrated IMO. They've been playing bad teams, including Pittsburgh, and are from the PAC 10.) (1) Ohio State vs. (2) Georgetown (Hibbert and Oden will be non factors considering they'll be in foul trouble. Green is overrated but Ron Lewis still needs to play big and knock down 3's.) Post your's.
