I don't think Caesar truly wanted a plot to kill Pompey. When he fled to Egypt after his defeat at Pharsalus, the Ptolomies chopped off his head. Caesar was said to be really angry and distressed.

Ancient Judaism

Technically, it's the first 'recorded' Monotheism. -
Ancient Judaism
Rameses the Great replied to Favonius Cornelius's topic in Templum Romae - Temple of Rome
They did that because they thought God had abandoned them. So when Moses went up they decided to worship a golden calf. The idea of an idol of an animal was usually used by Phillistines and people around the area Canaan. They may have done this to be like everyone else. Like when they wanted a king, God allowed it if they needed one to lead them rather than just have one to be like the other nations. However Judaism itself is Monotheistic. Polytheism seems to be a recurrent thing everywhere at that time. Not until later in Egypt, Mesopatamia, and Persia did they start having monotheistic views. Even the rest of Europe believed in more than one God. I have a question, did they even have Baal back then? I highly doubt the Phoenecians were a major power at that time. -
Legions Major Weakness - Cavalry?
Rameses the Great replied to Princeps's topic in Gloria Exercitus - 'Glory of the Army'
Well, it is fair to point out that the cavalry is a weakness against infantry. However, the legion has shown weakness to it. For example, the Battle of Carrhae. However the legions did have formations to counterbalance the cavalry charges by the enemy. The Roman's should have chosen rocky ground to engage enemies with superior cavalry. Vegetius gave ways to repel cavalry Vegetius' plans. Yet, the legions weakness was not the other cavalry yet it's own cavalry. In many battles against the Germans, their superior cavalry would overtake the Roman's thusly out flanking the Roman infantry. Since many of their opponent spent their whole life on horseback, or traveling so they had an advantage. How about the praetorian cavalry? -
Pantagathus
Rameses the Great commented on Gaius Octavius's blog entry in Diurnal Journal - On Occasion
Then Pantagathus comes, says something to Gaius. Gaius using his masterful English will say something to Pantagathus. Pertinax will come in here also using masterful English. Pantagathus will join in with his abundant languages at an attempt to counterbalance the high English usage. And as always we will be doing this in the midst of all of this. :frusty: -
I voted for the British victory over the Spanish armada. Spain was so rich and wealthy, it fostered a huge army along with the huge balky ships. Anyways, the British sailed around the ships and shot it from behind. I notice a shift in power that day from Spain to England and France. That's the day they became stronger. I can't imagine a Spanish influence of England. The cultures are so different. Or as my 5th grade history teacher said, 'that day the huge bully down the street Spain got punched in the mouth by some kid. Now when he did that everyone knew that there was a new bully on the block. The Most Significan Battle in Britain IMO.

On the history channel it says that the Greeks got the myth of Atlantis from the Egyptians. The Egyptians called this land Kapichu. The Atlanteans needed it's ally Egypt for financial support so it lived on as a story. The Greeks heard of this, and reported it all over. Plato was said to be hiding in some kind of baquet and told about the story in his rendition. Plato's Atlanits this gives you some in sight on the book mentioned above by Viggen.

I remember when Fidel Castro tripped over that chair. I feel rather sorry for him and his regime. Since he is no longer a pupped for the USSR he has been useless. Just staying there without any support being the only western nation that is Communist. I think that when and if he dies, his regime will die with him. That is if the new government does not intervene quickly. Like what happened in Iran.

At least you work in the store. Sometimes during the winter I am expected to bring in carts. When it is nice out they tell me to take inventory. -
Cannae Anniversary
Rameses the Great replied to P.Clodius's topic in Gloria Exercitus - 'Glory of the Army'
This will be the battle that showed Rome was not the only power. At the zenith of power they were stopped, not in the Middle East, not in Gaul, but in Italy. I think that if it had not been for Hannibal, Carthage would not even be a famous ancient power. Carthage was blessed by the great military mind of Hannibal. Then again when you go against Rome, I don't care who you are, the chances of winning are basically none. ROMA INVECTA! -

As Pertinax earlier stated, the metalworks of the Mediterranian were more advanced than the Celts. Also the Roman shield can easily intercept the oncoming slow motion sword. The dagger with one quick motion can already disable the Celt thus making it more effective. That is why the Romans did not really use long swords. If they saw it as effective they would have made the switch.

Still, you have to account for how long Tyre would hold out. If they just played their cards right they could have held out for weeks maybe months. Remember Alexander always had fortune on his side. Also Carthage and Macedonia have a history together even if it means attacking their homeland. If I've learned anything from Alexander he can't be stopped, but he can be delayed. However if Carthage and Alexander's army fought each other it would have been a great showdown. However, I think we all know who would have won.

Perhaps Yemen, because of the easy access to Somalia and Eithiopia. Also it is close to India, and since it is full of mountains it is not very hot like Saudi Arabia of Oman. Just my observation.

Just An Aside--summer Is Here!
Rameses the Great commented on docoflove1974's blog entry in The Language of Love
If you live in San Francisco it should not be like some other places in California. I presume the Bay cools the area and it should not get too warm. However I'm with Gaius East Coast Bias Baby! -
Are you kidding me, that's awesome Mr. Dalby. Hopefully this will spark some interesest in history... optimistic I know. I'll try to get the article on the net and then post it here if I can. Good Job. Rediscovering Homer by: Andrew Dalby I could have done more, but I don't know if he would like me to bring it up. By the way, I'll buy the book.

Is that from Roman times? It looks like Northwestern Mideival head armour to me. Something I found interesting and please tell me if I am generalizing here. Do you notice back then that nations that were undeveloped like: Gaul, Germania, and Britania are now the most advanced in the world? Also, areas diregarding the Euro: Italy, Greece, and the Middle East are not that developed but was considered the most developed in its day? Perphaps a changing of the guards.
