  1. This may be a tad bit off topic but I read in a book some where that Greek slaves were regarded as the best in Ancient Rome. Any truth to this?
  2. The Han dynasty lasted around 400 years while the Roman Empire lasted for 1,000 years. At the peak of the Han dynasty they conquered anything from North Korea to Vietname. The difference is their military and population allowed for them to easily conquer lands. In Germania alone there were more people living there than in Italy. In China and Rome, certainly they had different imports and exports which allowed for extreme cultural differences. The Han dynasty did not need to conquer but Rome needed to so it can keep its citizens happy. Also, the flexibility of the Roman empire needs to be taken into accountability. Through internal affairs they maintained to still be powerful. The Han dynasty did not have this kind of flexibility so they had to be more strict. Another thing I notice is that Rome was accepting to other cultures like those of the Greek, Egyptians, etc. The Chinese were said to be fairly conservative and rejected any other culture that would conflict with their own.
  3. My opinion on this statement. The word Alexander and overrated do not go together. Credit Genghis Khan for having the brains to stop the Mongols from fighting each other and uniting them. Credit Atilla and the Huns for conquering lands weakened. Alexander conquered the unconquerable at the zenith of their power. No less than 35,000 men facing down 600,000. The first one ever to link the east to the west. Facing Indians and conquering them something that was thought impossible. He did all that at the age of 21. Give him at least 10 more years, and we may not be talking about Carthage, Rome, or even the Arabs! I not only believe the hype of what he did, but what he could have done if he did not die early. That is why he bares the name Alexander the Great.
  4. In my opinion you just can't make such a comparison. The Roman Empire and the Mediterranian is associated with the West. China, Mongolia, India, etc are associated with the East. You just can't make that kind of comparison becuause there is no correlation. They had no contact to speak of. Most people who traveled to various places at the time did not have knowledge about both civilizations. Most people here are interested in Roman history not Chinese. I don't want to be mean, but it just won't work here. Perhaps the mods can be leniant and move it to the arena where you may get a few things.
  5. I think you and I are on the same page Mr. Dalby. Initially I do not think that Macedonians were Greeks. If there is an expert on genetics can someone help to shed some light on this. Rameses needs to know!
  6. Man, I hate Spiders! Anyways, just hire a professional. Then hire an exterminator to take out those stupid spiders.
  7. That's great. What was it used for? I want to get inside that thing and pop it.
  8. haha, I thought Pertinax was the calm type. When he sees this, I wonder how calm he will be.
  9. I don't know how to wear a quilt, I'm not Scotish. I'm guessing the second one on the right. By the way, those Vikings may come back to PEI so watch out in Canadia.
  10. By terms of culture maybe but not by genetics. I could always tell apart a Macedonian from a Greek in terms of appearance. Can any expert on this help us out?
  11. Here is the man who plans to take you from Europe to Asia, and can not even get from one side of the room to the other. --Alexander the Great
  12. Could that be why present day Turks look different than the Greeks?
  13. Ca na ma dit rien. This does not interest me.
  14. The unexamined life is not worth living. --Socrates
  15. My forefathers once lost a country to, and it's name is Egypt. Similarly to Lebanon we have lost to the Muslim invaders. Everyone who did not pay the heavy taxes to the Muslims were senteced to death. Thankfully my family was said to be a Greek Ptolomy of high economic status. The name Dimitry, Demitrios was said to be a station garrison left by Alexander. Anyways, war is a terrible thing. Groups planning an invasion on a nation is something that leaves you stunned and saddened. Like tflex the number of Christians in Egypt during the 70's were 30% now 10% and dropping. The Muslim Brotherhood gaining more power who knows what may happen. I have visited Egypt twice and each time I go it becomes worse and worse. One day I walked up through the streets of Alexandria and asked my dad, 'what's so great about it, it is just a normal city.' He replied, 'it used to be great, now it is a normal city. My mother lived along the Suez canal, now we can't go there because of the wars with Israel that transpired. I can honestly say I may not feel all the pain you do because you were born in Lebanon. However, I can't help but think 'what if' this did not all happen.
  16. Also, the Romans needed northern Egypt for the grain supplies to feed their citizens in Rome. Since most of the lands the Romans had was not farmable they needed a place that would supply enough food through the empire. If they annexed Nubia that would have added to their problems. Another point that can be made, was that Northern Egypt was consolidated into one nation that had ties to the Mediterranian. Nubia is more on the side of Africa.
  17. Moonlapse, it says in the bible, no one will know the end of the Earth not even the angels up in heaven. When John was exiled to Cyprus he saw everything in visions sent to him. So the interpretation is unclear. If you want the true correct answer I can't tell you, it's with God. No disrespect by any stretch of the imagination but I don't want to hear this, 'I was a good Christian who went to church everyday.' St. Athanasius was a pagan yet he stayed true to what he believed is right. If we just heed the word of God rather than love him, we do not sincerely love him.
  18. It would have been the same, but how different would the world have been? Chalons was important and psychologically effected Atilla and his army. However this could have been a catalyst to expedite Atilla's conquest of Gaul. Inevitably the outcome of the war was determined by a peace treaty after Atilla started destroying Northern Roman towns. Aquilea, Milan, etc. Pope Leo gave him his ransom of gold to leave for the summer campaigning and he died along with his army. Chalons could have marked how much of Gaul could have been desimated effecting the economic flow of the empire. The question of could Atilla have conquered the gates of Rome itself, no he was not even close.
  19. You know what is beautiful Moolapse, you live next to the place where the Colorado Rockies play baseball.
  20. All the terrorists will do is hit and run like chickens with their heads cut off. The European Union must be destroyed and soon before it is a Totalitarian government. The open door policy of Europe leaves it more than seceptible to attacks from Islam extremist. The U.S. rarely now has a case of severe subway bombings or airplane hijacking. Something has to be done to ensure the safety of their true citizens because that is who the terrorists seem to be targeting. Or as the old Chinese addage goes: "Prevention is better than cure." Here, Here to that!
  21. Gaius, we all know Tim Cowlishaw from Around the Horn is TOMCAT. If it's not a nickname what is it that you are searching for? The Egyptian is now enlisted as your searching assistant.
