  1. Thank you WotWotius! I couldn't find the blasted book so I had to use the memory from a year ago. That's exactly how it went. (Now I'm embarrased ) Hey, I was close!
  2. Well school's finally started (third day) and I'm starting to get adjusted to the boatloads of work I'm getting. By all means I'm not complaining, I did it to myself after all. I took two science courses (chem and physics) and a college U.S. history course. On the side I have band and it's after-school activities. Spanish is really fun this year, the teacher won't speak english unless she really has to. She even has her dirt-clodden pants that she wore running with the bulls in Spain hanging on the wall. I took a world literature class, and our first unit is on the play Antigone by Sophocles. I was one of the few who could pronounce that. Besides starting at 6:50 in the morning, school's alright. Math could go though. ('''\(';,,;')/"') Now to something you care about. Maybe... Suprisingly my school library has a decent, (but by all means lacking) selection of books regarding Rome. I picked up one today that I may review, it is a little treat. Unfortunately it is out of print, but you can still get them through websites like Barnes and Noble. There is also a really nice book on Roman cooking called Around the Roman Table. I think Pertinax would be interested in that one. It has a backround on all sorts of ingredients, and many different recipes. I may have to try making lentil soup. It probably is too basic for him :notworthy: though. I should go start my outline for my european exploration historical essay... I need to get some new pics for meh album... well here's a little trifle. Lost_Warrior's fractals! I update the gallery everytime I make something new.
  3. Necro post. Hurrah! Edit: Correct song placed in. The ditty I mentioned above goes something like this: (Thanks to WotWotius!) 'Home we bring our bald whoremonger; Romans, lock your wives away! All the bags of gold you lent him Went his Gallic tarts to pay.'
  4. No problem Pertinax, I just mis-interpreted a bit. I get it now. Carry on.
  5. I thought you could always have more than one gallery... Lost_Warrior and Gaius have more than two... Edit: My mistake- I meant album!
  6. Scoring system bad. Some people that were declared enemy of the state were actually the good guys. Too many flaws with your scheme.
  7. Thought of by Lost_Warrior, started by me. This thread will cover living conditions/daily life in the legions. According to ("Legions." Life and Death in Rome. History Channel. Mar.-Apr.) each contubernium lived in there own small room, rather cramped. They lived together for the duration of their service unless promoted out of the infantry. Each week the men would get a duty roster. Certain soldiers skilled in writing and math could get easy jobs and more pay. Sometimes the contubernium could bribe their centurion to get out of latrine cleaning.
  8. In the Republican army you would first have your velites harass the enemy while sceening the approaching main force. The hastati would first engage to wear down the enemy. Once the hastati tire, they fall back through the openings in the maniples and the principes would finish the job. The triarii would hold ground in case all failed. They had the interesting job- if you were a triarii you would rarely have to fight, but when you did, it meant you had to protect the routing army, and not fall back yourself. The cavalry alae were mainly to protect the flanks and ham a fleeing army. Besides ambushing, the legions really didn't do too much fancy meneuvering like today's armies. (I think) As for post-marian legions, you may find the different formations at the bottom interesting.
  9. I actually took a really informative semester of economics a couple years ago. We certainly got the basics down. I don't know how much there really is to know about economics though. I learned a lot though! If I get totally stumped I may just have to ask you. Greenspan was a good guy.
  10. Hehe I read the Hardy Boys back in elementary school... (long time ago!) I really don't get too much extra time to read, so I can't say I've read too many other mystery books. I did like the movie Vertigo though. That was a good mystery and ancient movie.
  11. OMFG NO! That guy was awesome! He made animals interesting... aww... .
  12. I'll ditto that. I don't understand why all these people opposed it as they did. It's a ficticious book. Who cares if someone pokes at religion? He wrote it to make money, not to bring the church down. Jeez, I watched DOGMA, with Jay and Silent Bob. Now that was entertainment, how many people do you s'pose took that movie seriously? Anywho, I could barely put the book down. I haven't read anything that exciting in a while. The last good mystery I've read was an old Hardy Boys book. I loved the puzzles and historical interminglings too. Every detail in the book had a purpose. One of my favs.
  13. I have already taken spanish for four years. The problem is that I haven't used it at all this summer, but it all comes back quickly each year. As for credits, I pack in the classes each year, so next year- my last year, I will only have 4-6 credits left allowing me to take classes at the local 'college' as well as my high school classes.
  14. Sadly enough school starts in two more days. This year I am traditionally tasked with searching for a college. The only problem is I really don't know what I want to do for a living. Despite that, I will be looking closely at the University of Madison. Hopefully my future job/career will be something different than the 8-hours-a-day-monotony that most people have. Perhaps the Italian and Russian I will learn in college will help achieve that. Maybe I'll name my future house 'HQ'. For the time being I must await the arrival of my book I won- That made my day. I only won one other contest in my life... Long time ago I drew a picture for some lego contest and won a bunch of free legos and t-shirts. My newest goal is to figure out a way to make some money through my photoshop work. ^_^ My newest trifle:
  15. O.o I saw the whole season at the movie rental store. May have to indulge myself.
  16. Wow. That is very different from the rest. Nice find.
  17. It made my day! I shall write a review. Thanks UNRV and E-Consultancy!
  18. Basically the christian emperor destroyed it to build a basilica/church.
  19. Well, what else do you expect from a fiction or hollywood writer? As for the legions making an image of themselves as 'steamroller action,' it's a little thing called prevention. I'd rather have peace through intimidation than constantly be attacked because my army looks weak. The first image usually sticks though. Native Armericans were always regarded as savages because Colombus said so, and everyone had to believe him. Through time we get the full picture.
  20. I think I'm going to get that book too. Paine was mentioned ONCE in school. I'm interested now.
  21. If it prevents us from getting nuked. So it's our fault Africa is poor? That's the stupidest attempt at slander I've ever heard! It's people like Robert Mugabe that make Africa the charity case. How much does your country donate?! I would also love to see where you get your information from.
