  1. If the war is over, do you still need the old cause? Are they that vexed that they need to keep killing? It shows what extremists really stand for when they sacrifice their own people to kill others. So, it is true they don't even follow what they teach...
  2. The Colossus of Rhodes It would have been awesome to see.
  3. Necro Post. Hurrah! Gaius, I found the answer and remembered this old topic. While recently reading my wonderful book on the fourteenth legion, it said that the hand at the top of the standard was a symbol of power.
  4. The siege of Masada was merely wiping out the last group of religious zealots. The Jewish Revolt was well over by then, but in a Roman's eye, a revolt isn't over until every last man of opposition is gone. The siege of Masada really isn't a good example of the overall views between Jew and Roman.
  5. I'll try to rent it this weekend for a refresher, and then I'll write something up.
  6. If you have the oppertunity, go for it! To understand Rome you should understand what influence her beginnings. It's hard to understand U.S. history if you don't know anything about the English colonies or the immense Spanish and French presence there.
  7. There was nothing wrong with the Bellamy salute until Hitler used it. I hate it when evil people take perfectly good symbols and damn them so nobody can ever use them again. I think they are holding their hands out to grab something. Thats what it looks like in Maximus' Column pic.
  8. [drool]:afro: :punk: :pimp:  [/drool]
  9. To add to that Favonius, the central/southern Italy doesn't really experience snow (I think...), so 'seasons' there wouldn't be governed by weather. The early Latins would have been in a hellenistically influenced warband. I believe they were in semi-organised lines of phalanxes, but with significantly shorter spears. The triarii were a remnant of these warbands.
  10. Read my blog and share your memories.
  11. I was in 6th grade and I was sitting in english class. We were (ironically) working on current events. Someone came in and said the World Trade Center had been hit by a plane. We were not permitted to watch the news despite accumulating bits of news. I thought it was against our rights, no matter the age, to withhold us from watching the news. Only until after I got home I learned the rest; only until recently have I truly comprehended the magnitude of the outcome that day. Despite the times we live in, we should never live in constant fear of what may happen- we should always sieze the day and continue on strong. That would be the greatest gift we could give to all those who died. What were you doing that fateful day?
  12. I watched Pink Floyd's The Wall. Roger Waters has the same idea about the school system as you do- homogenization.
  13. What I mean by 'seperation' is more along the lines of moving a cohort or two to a different legion, not for duties. The former affects fighting dtermination and moral.
  14. I think the Mr. Centurion would notice they were shorter then the old ones some time or another. Cheating the army wouldn't be a healthy thing.
  15. Hehe if no-one wants to I will, I could use the writing experience, but I'll have to find time between school and work.
  16. I sure hope I get something that makes me travel...
  17. Unit cohesion is a big factor, and the romans understood it well. The men would learn to trust each other, and that takes time. Seperating them would cause many problems in the short run.
  18. Hopefully people follow the copywrite...
  19. Jean Revez studies old things, but that doesn't make him wedded to old ways. The professor of Egyptian history at the University of Montreal in Canada is developing one of several emerging techniques for electronically recording and interpreting ancient stone inscriptions. Read the article here.
  20. Heh. It was the full moon messing with ya.
