  1. I like the narrative approach, like making a pile of facts a history book makes into a sort of "story" that allows me to make a picture in my head. I find those kinds of books very easy to read and very easy to remember from the constant imaging in my head.
  2. Pyrrhus won most of his battles because of his elephants and lost the war because of the awesome determination of the Roman people. Hannible holds him in high regard because he was said to be the first to utilize night camps/fortlets. He wrote a book on military strategy but it has been lost to the ages.
  3. This screenshot I took confirms WotWotius' post. Samnites with Swastikas.
  4. I don't think he would have made it much longer than he had- lack of money, supplies/equipment, and shortage or renewable men. He did very well for what he had though.
  5. The only thing I don't like about this style of game is that after you beat the thing 10 times, you find that the game progresses quite slowly, managing a gargantuous empire gets boring, once you wipe out a few factions the rest are not a serious threat. Even on 'very hard' I still can not lose; I make bad situations for myself just for a challenge. (Or maybe I've just played it too much...!) Still love it though! Edit: Cool little story... On the vanilla, I was playing the Julii and was being attacked by huge armies of Spanish, British, German, and Dacians all before the Marian Reforms. (After that event your units are pretty much invincible) Almost lost that campaign- I sent a small force to conquer Crete just in case I lost my cities. I still beat them all of course.
  6. Appendix "On Roman Names and Civil Rights" From- C, Cherryh Legions of Hell. New York: Baen Publishing Enterprise, 1987. Women had two names that never changed in their lives even through marriage. Also stated is that Romans didn't own a name, they carried it, aquiring the burdens that came with the name. Hope this helps.
  7. Ah! Wait until I get home and I can provide a whole explaination. It had to do with aristocrats and clan names, adoptions, ect. and the number in line you were for that name. Mark Antony was born a pleb, so he only has two names. I will have a super explaination when I can get to my book later, so nabody better beat me to this!
  8. Yay! UNRV is back! I see Germanicus is too! When I tried to get on yesterday all I got was a "not found" message, I had no idea that someone "hacked" the history forum... He will be flayed alive. Roman justice served.
  9. Well, if these guys incorporate 'historically accurate' naked fanatics like RTR did, then they are hardcore...
  10. Well, if our Lord of Brookenhausen is consigned to the Tartarus, I get his TV.
  11. Don't forget it's also the Canadian Thanksgiving.
  12. Great News! I just sent out a bunch of e-mails yesterday to various Dr./professors/experts on the Siege of Masada/Eastern-Roman History, and I already have many of them responding already saying they are willing to help! After I send my questions and recieve my answers I shall post them for everyone's benefit. I got a response from Walter Zanger- he sometimes is the tour guide for this place! OMG
  13. I didn't like the triumphal music as the legions were being surrounded... I thought it was pretty good though. I should show you guys some of my Rome: Total War videos.
  14. Wow. Scientists should have a full-scale research project of the effects of the full moon on people. This weekend was the craziest I've ever had. 1) Friday, while escorting several sophomores to a band party after a half-time performance, I went over to talk to some fellow clarinets in their car going to go get movies. A bunch of drunk hmongs decided our presence across the street was 'trespassing their property'- I recieved a punch to the jaw and somehow talked thirty approaching drunks to go back to their binge. I was more worried about the group I was escorting, comprising of five girls and one other guy, and the two fellow upper classmen in the car. This is a village of 5000 some people for god's sake, and I have these people living a block down the street from me... It was a great party though! So much caffeine and junkfood... mmm. 2) Yesterday was Music in Motion, the statewide band/marching festival. Bands from all over the state participate. We hosted the event, and only performed as exhibition. Turns out that right after we got off the field and got to the gate, one of our drummers warned us that some streakers were coming. They barely made it in the gate before they were booking it the other way. The driver of the getaway car was caught and the police got all the names, and it turns out they were all from the football team. HAH. Wow. With all the stuff in between, this has been the craziest weekend I've ever had. Highschool is weird. There are a lot of stupid people that go to my school. I would never imagine band being such an eventful institution... ------- On a less adrenaline-inducing note, I learned that I speak American, not English. In AP U.S. we were discussing the divergent evolution of American culture Vs. British culture after the revolutionary war. Language between America and Britain is much more different than most people think. In America, we say, "Give me a wake-up call in the morning before I take a smoke." In Britain, they say, "Knock me up in the morning before I blow a fag." Say that in America and the ignoratii will jeer until you leave. I also learned in spanish class of the respective title 'Don' as in 'Don Tomasso'. Gaius' lofty language still confuzzes the hell outa me. Speaking of which, where'd he go? The two P's :notworthy: lofty explainations don't help. Got the new empire wallmap. Stared at it for a while. I Love it.
  15. Caesar Salad. Tiberius wants to save all the little boys. LOL.
  16. Well, my new wallmap has just arrived in the mail today. The only word I have about it is 'exquisite.' Now I must go revel in its awesomeness for a few hours.
  17. The only problem I had was the other day when I tried to mark all posts as read, and it refused to do it.
  18. I've seen a full-circle rainbow before on a bus back from Indianapolis. It had just poured, and I couldn't believe what I saw. Later on that same trip I saw double rainbows too.
  19. Say what? My patron is ill?!? My deitic ethereal view of him is shattered!!! Gold does not tarnish, but the gold coins he issued to me seem to have done so!
  20. Veterans most certainly kept their weapons. After they retired, they usually stored their equipment away in case they had to be recalled for an emergency situation. A great example of this is during the Boudicca rebellion. [sarcasm]I think they hung their gladii over the fireplace as we do guns. [/sarcasm]
