  1. I just started reading an old book I found deep in a recess of my school library's bookshelf. It is called Roman Military Law by C.E. Brand. It was published in 1968 (give or take a year), and is my first serious study of the Romans. This book is very unlike many of the other books I have read. This one is a serious scholarly work, and I am already engrossed after the first chapter because of the knowledge contained within. I can't wait to finish and provide a review! I am very fortunate I found this book- I looked all over the net for a place to buy it (because I can constantly refer to it), but I could only find it in the "out of print" section at the Barnes and Noble site for $100+. I don't know why it costs so much- the inside cover of the dust jacket says $6.50! Perhaps I can cut a sweet deal with the librarians... (I'm sure they don't know how much this book goes for...!) Interesting excerpt I want to share: One of the Censor's duties was to uphold public morality, but perhaps they overdid it... ***Important Question*** Has anybody heard of Theodor Mommsen, R
  2. I'm learning a lot in this thread! But that's just it- it was the same situation that the Russians were in during WWI! I was mostly talking about early war, but I know the Reds were formidable after the war. Still, in a ground war I think Americans would win- but not by much. We didn't have the "Win at all costs, no matter how many die" policy, therefore I believe the Red Army was a giant Pyrrhus case. Order 227 isn't the greatest way to win. Where is this thread going? I'm mostly in RE to Ramses' post.
  3. No, but even if you were to go down the side of a formation, if one wheel of the chariot is continually hitting mass and the other not, wouldn't that turn the chariot inward or rip the wheel off?
  4. "Julius Caesar was the only man who ever decided to overthrow the state while he was sober." M. Cato
  5. It would be safe to say that if the Soviets were to use the same strategy in a war against us as they did in WWII, they wouldn't stand all that great of a chance. If it weren't for 'the second front' we don't know what would have happened to the Red Army. In comparison to the Nazis, the Reds were poorly equipped and had terrible logistics. They had the "Not one step back" policy, disasterous considering most men had barely a clip of ammo for each battle. Sure, the Reds reached Berlin first, but they lost thousands in their sprint to get to Berlin first. Their tactics were disasterous. THe soviets could not afford another war of that magnitude.
  6. My favorite evil peoples are the Alien Combine Regime. I watched some silly Area 51 show on the history channel yesterday, so, to be original; I'll overthrow the Camo Dudes. (In conjunction with the obvious evils of the world.)
  7. That was the first thing I noticed. No explaination.
  8. Archaeologists will find a pair of 46in waist jeans and call us barbarians.
  9. I'm sure that's not why Rome fell, but the American aspect is disgusting.
  10. I think that's what the problem would be with scythed chariots- once you hit the mass of men, you are litterally stopped. It would be like biking head-on into corn stalks. (Don't do that btw, it hurts.) The Brits moreover used chariots as mobile archers, and carried the important leaders. Quick question: what constitutes a 'chariot'? The Romans used 'ox-led chariots' against Pyrrhus' elephants. I could only imagine them being little more than carts carrying velites and spike collars on the oxen.
  11. I am loving the razor-sharp wit! :king: :giljotiini: Nothing gets past me!
  12. Haha. Turns out that right now I'm writing an essay for tomorrow on Andrew Jackson.
  13. That one? Yup! Very well then, but remember- only my hand is to grace her exquisite countenance!
  14. I need to take a trip to this "Brookenhausen" myself someday soon...
  15. Our personal books are called "United States History, Preparing for the Advanced Placement Examination" by John J. Newman and John M. Schmalbach. As for the textbook we use, The textbooks are called, "The American Nation" by Mark C. Carnes and John H. Garraty.
  16. I saw the last two shows yesterday. I thought they were pretty good, and really make me want to obtain some primary sourcebooks now to confirm that whole mess leading to Alaric sacking Rome. Poor Honorius.
  17. He speaks to me and the robotic manner in which I pledge my soul to the flag in the corner of the room.
  18. I don't want to breathe anymore. O! The oxidation! I know several people like the above described...
  19. If you don't want to say "under god", then leave it out. One should say his pledge, otherwise he is not a very good citizen. Our school does the pledge everyday, hand on heart. I think that is a little excessive, every Monday would be perfect.
