  1. Here, in America, we finally got some precipitation. A nanometer or so. Good for the flowers. How are you folks in the old world doing with all the snow and rain? Any of you smash your chariots?
  2. Had lunch with HRH and the Dutchess of Cornwall today. He chose Gorgonzola, she a light brie. The rules were suspended, considering my guests, so we had a couple of bottles of Trappiste. Of course, I did not bring up the enema business, but a knighthood, for me, was bandied about. We watched the harbour go by, but alas, we parted much too soon. We will meet again at my home in Corbridge.
  3. Yes, you make sense, but I still can't get 'oligarchy' out of my miserable head.
  4. What?, now I am a praetor! I know that I deserve the promotion, but does that mean that I can execute MPC, and :mummy: ? I'll throw 'em off the Tarpeian Rocks with my own hands. Watch out Ursus and Germanicus!
  5. All of the responses are helpful, but I am still wondering how Moslems were treated in the Empire and what their status was from 624AD to 1453AD.
  6. Yep, C 137, so let us all not befoul this one with polemics and ad hominem aspersions.
  7. I am not trying to demean you. I am learning too much to turn this into polemics. As you well know, I admire you. Please turn the underlined parts into questions. I may be misunderstanding, and I have, perhaps, misled others.
  8. I mentioned that earlier on here...married to a good bloke with a big villa...that way I could have some power, but not much. Basically, comfortable and able to do as I please! An empress would be too time consuming, and too dangerous. Too many people gunning for my position! Thank Iupiter! I was thinking in terms of Messalina.
  9. NN, doesn't mention anything about their religion, but is interesting. http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=...;action=history For me it now brings up the question of the Khazars. Were they Jewish? A Lost Tribe? As far as I am concerned, it is fair game to go as far afield as one would like in this thread.
  10. MPC, please don't forget Prof. Lintott (above). The underlined may be understood as questions.
  11. Disagreement and dialogue advance knowledge. Each one may then elect as he legitimately chooses.
  12. Doesn't this gainsay your point about elections?
  13. Where does your certainty come from GO? Elected magistrates (including tribunes since the lex Atinia, and quaestors since at least Sulla) were eligible to sit in the senate, and these were elected posts (the quaestorship, for example, since at least 443 BCE). Since Sulla, anyone elected to the quaestorship could serve in the senate (e.g., having been elected quaestor for 75, Cicero serves on the senate sub-committee examining the dispute between Oropos and the tax collectors in 73). EDIT: I'm assuming you don't have Andrew Lintott's "Constitution of the Roman Republic", so check out this interview with Lintott: he gives a better answer to your question than I did. Therefor, I may legitimately conclude that all senators were 'elected' and that upon exiting one of the magistracies they left the Senate?
  14. What were the qualifications for becoming a Senator? They certainly weren't elected. Aren't the Roman 'rules of order' part of the modern rules? MPC, I think that you have overstated the 'argument' bit. Because one supports another in an 'argument', it does not necessarily follow that another argument has been introduced.
  15. Such delusions of grandeur... Iupiter! How would likte to ask  who she would be!
  16. [quote name='Ursus' date='Jan 28 2007, 11:03 AM' post='54290' The interaction between Islamic and Byzantine worlds is a valid enough topic for the post-Roman/Byzantine forum, so let us move it there. Sorry. Please do. Take a pill; take a nap, and then try reading what has been posted.
  17. [quote name='votadini' date='Jan 28 2007, 10:23 AM' post='54282' Meaning in the Eastern Empire (after the 7th Century)? Yes. And from 624AD on.
  18. Hope that a 'commercial' egg will work as well. No barnyard available.
  19. Presuming that there were Moslems in the Empire, what is known about them and their status?

  21. Is that the Netherby of the poem 'Lochinvar'?
