  1. "You may not appreciate the precepts of Stoicism, Ursus, but it was the dominant world-view in Rome, espoused by everyone from slaves like Epictetus to emperors like Aurelius." "...is just dumb." Agreed? Nonetheless I shall take up the matter of 'everyone' with Dr. Johnsom. ----------------------------- "More generally, though, I agree with you that Christianity--with its celebration of humility, for example--has made it difficult to see Caesar as his contemporaries might have." Rather, a historical certainty! ----------------------------- "I understand that some of you are fans of that darling of Venus,...." Et tu MPC? ----------------------------- FYI, insanity is both a legal and medical concept. The wind bag.
  2. In my opinion: Caesar's claims to godly descent and deity were for the consumption of the polloi. No one of consequence 'believed' the 'god' quackery extant then. To glorify one's self was the Roman way in those times. Cicero! The man at Alesia a psycho? The man who wrote the Gallic Wars a blooming psycho? Then Augustus must have been a nut case also - a god in the provinces. Psycho analysing a man from two millenia away! Call for telequack, senator frist! Retro-telecyber analysis! Slaves in the fields and mines were Stoics?
  3. MPC, aren't those symbols in the 'Numbers' link above?
  4. I don't know, but you might try a Google search.

  7. I am afraid to ask how the Greeks notated fractions?
  8. With regard to: http://www.unrv.com/forum/index.php?act=ST...st=0#entry45761 I think that I must adjust my statement that Cicero might have been the ultimate cause of the Fall. Perhaps the penultimate.
  9. ??I didn't quite understand why and how the Lex Gabina was improperly passed.?
  10. And the ancient Green Monster gnawed away at their innards as they gnashed their teeth. The venom of the Snake exuded from every ventricle of their jealousy ridden beings. Fetid vapors sprang forth from their cake holes. And the gods abandoned them. &
  11. So, now you are a cyber doctor! QUACK!
  12. Perhaps, the question that should be asked is: What is the earliest civilization presently known. Hasn't P.P. just posted about Uruk?
  13. Let us know how cold crow tastes as you eat your hearts out! &
  14. ??Some Roman cities carried on the Olympic games into the 6th century even after their being banned by Theodosius?
  15. Wasn't it St. Cyril who adapted and introduced the 'Cyrilic' alphabet to the Slavs? For a 'cruel' imponderable, why didn't the Slavs and 'Greeks' adopt Arabic notation? Seems easier to use. *Bump* Fractions?
  16. N.N., can you post a good link to that Google site?
  17. Sorry to say that I haven't heard a peep about the proposed NYC Meeting. Gave it a 'bump'.
