  1. In todays WSJ (Weekend Edition) there is an article about the Latin language. Dr. Andrew Dalby is cited. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB119103413731143589.html Vicipaedia (15,000 entries): http://la.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pagina_prima If you can't get into the WSJ, let me know and I will copy the article.
  2. It truly pleases me to have to inform both of you that you are both el rongo.
  3. Wilson's disease? Negatory! And it's not Jackson's disease either.
  4. It would have been an unlucky day for me if I ever used a teacher's or prof's first name. Try dating a better class of peoples!
  5. How did ordinary people enter into binding contracts? How did soldiers (and others) 'seal' their wills?
  6. Salve, GO! It's simply the morphological evolution of the Latin word into modern English, via French empereur.. In Latin, both the commander's and the Emperor's title were written the same, Imperator. If my memory serves, the title imperator, i.e., 'commander', was given to a victorious general by acclamation of his men and did not (originally) have a political connotation.
  7. The veteran legionaries were the triarii. There was a saying when things were going poorly that it was down to the triarii. Generally, the velites (skirmishers) commenced activities; retreated through the lines and then the principes took over. Sorry! That should have been Hastati instead of Principes.
  8. Are all y'all working on the above or am I being neglected?
  9. I thought that I was your friend!

  10. Could it possibly be that the word 'Imperator' has been melded into the word 'emperor' by the ignoratti? My 'spell checker' advises emperor for imperator.
  11. IRIS (Imperial Roman Intelligence Service) reports that The G-Man is on leave from the Elyria, Ohhiyo, insane asylum!
  12. Finger nail discoloration, liver and kidney failure, mental disorder, alopecia.
  13. There is absolutely nothing like a British sit-com! Once upon a time, the U.S. had such great comedians as Sid Ceasar, Sam Levenson and Jackie Gleason. Now we have the likes of Stienfeld. God I want to see Angelo's! I'd pay for the BBC putting them on here in the US.
  14. My gods! All along I thought that he was so staid and proper! British stiff upper lip and all that. I'm appalled! One simply can't believe anything until one reads the Brigantine Weekly World News!
