  1. See A.D.'s reposte in the above. I don't know how much light the following sheds on the matter, but it speaks to the oral tradition of the Homeric poems and the possibilities of authorship: "The War at Troy (What Homer Didn't Tell)"; Quintus of Smyrna, Translated by Frederick M. Combellack 1968, Univ. of Oklahoma Press. "Quintus' epic, written probably in the third century A.D., is the only extant literary work from antiquity that gives a connected account of the events of the Trojan War, which took place between the death of Hector and the departure of the Greeks. It tells what happened to Achilles and to Troy, and many other things besides - among them the fatal enterprises of the Queen of the Amazons and the King of Ethopia, the funeral games held in Achilles honor, the victory of Odysseus in his contest with Ajax for Achilles splendid armor, the death of Paris, the strategy of the wooden horse, and the capture and sack of Troy." (From the fly leaf of the book.) I think that most believe that the above is in the Iliad and the Odyessy. What I am trying to get at is that there was an oral tradition in antiquity, and simply because Homer is accredited with the poems, does not prove that 'he' wrote them.
  2. John Ashcroft and the telereverendos wouldn't approve. Poor georgey would be aghast!
  3. 1. Check the Home page of this site and click around. 2. Your local library. 3. Perseus
  4. For the sake of argument, presume a mob of some 50,000 blood thirsty fans in the stands and a decent, non-fraudulent to-do. Does the victor stop to count the direction of thumbs for majority rule? Can he actually see the direction? If the louts are all screaming for different results, what then? Could it be that there was just one arbiter? Then it is back to A.D.'s query.
  5. You are aware, of course, of the ill begotten rich Brit investmant bankers shuffled off to texass to answer to the magistrates for their peccadillos in re the Enron affair. Well, well founded rumors have it that the red necks are practicing with their ropes preparatory to a neck stretching party. Beer, skittles and bar-b-que will be served at the party. All s are invited. This little bit popped up. It seems that the Department of Defense has been selling hi-tech military stuff to any and all comers. We're worried about Osama and sundry scoundrels? Sheeesh,
  6. Pertinax: In all seriousness, is that a circumcised penis? What is he holding in his left hand? Pantagathus: Would it be right to conclude that the acceptance of slaves into the mysteries carried over into Christianity and thus contributed to its spread?
  7. We elect these clods? Ever get the feeling that you should screw some heads into their shoulders? Those spin doctors should be CENSORED .
  8. My Lord: National Public Radio. Something like your BBC.
  9. I believe that the Romans used smoke and flags to transmit information along Hadrian's wall and elsewhere. Has anyone ever figured out the code used? And what did they use for signals on a dark night or rainy or foggy day? I also believe that Caesar encrypted his despatches. If the despatches are available, has any figured them out?
  10. Have always had nice things to say about you.
  11. Komrades: Seems that a certain party quoted from his bible over an open mike. Who knows, maybe God told him to do so in one of their recurrent chats. It is my present understanding that folks who talk to God usually become saints or are hauled off to the booby-hatch and not into the now Black House. And getting one of the heads of state attention by belching the Brookfordshiresexington formal "Yo!" It has also come about that the party of god and freedom and liberty wants to lift the press credentials of the NY Times reporters who let out some minor improprieties of the administration. How wrong I am! Always thought that it was the business of a free press to let the dis-educated masses in on these little tid bits. But then the certain party doesn't read newspapers - like his accolites. Someone's head (at the State Dep't) is going to get the chop. He complimented a L.A. Times reporter on, of all places, NPR! The same party vetoed the stem cell research bill. Could have helped him. All that is left is a brain transplant - with a fly - to get his mental faculties up a couple of notches. Alas, the republik in NYC is trying to sneak through a little bit limiting the the right of the lowly citizen to protest. We tax payers, on his account, now have to pay several hundred millions to the protesters at the republik convention whom he cuffed and threw into the slammer. As I am aware, all y'all are gravely concerned about the weather situation here in Brookfordshiresexington. It is foul, turgid, sticky and raining but otherwise quite CENSORED - Where does he get this stuff? . It sounds like WWII and as if Yamato and the Missouri were having at it. Just the facts; just the facts, maam, Gaius
  12. Petrified afterbirth containing intact, ancient DNA? :bag: Your Greekness may be onto something. They can compare it to mine.
  13. Pantagathus' referral is out. So I'll try a few answers. It was mostly the rich who did this. They could not be used in the infantry because they had to use their weapons in unison with the rest. The cavalry would be out perforce. Can't use reins and weapons at the same time. Without a thumb, one can't handle a bow, spear or gladius and a shield. The shield not only protects the holder, but also his mates.
  14. Clementina Panella has done a lot of good work. She was on one of those History Channel programs.
  15. I do believe so Bolivia Don Giovanni: If I err, you correct me. I am in your debt, for a change. Me,
  16. Or just look at Longbows avatar! Seen: I was referring to the fact that one could get to the British Museum's home page and being serious for once and you know it! His avatar is el microscopico
  17. Catawba - As in Catawba grapes? Lake Titicaca is in the Andes in Peru. My personal favorite is Mawah (Nu Joyzee).
  18. Thanks Longbow. Bookmarked the home page. For those who haven't, you might like to click on Sutton Hoo above.
  19. Very true - with one minor adjustment - they co-habitated with the local women.
