  1. I don't think I was the only non-German speaker who would sing along to the original thusly: 99 Luftbalons da da da da dadada da da da da da Captain Kirk...
  2. Gaius was speaking a certain dialect and I barely know what I'm doing in Italian but I try... We switched to something completely different to cause even more confusion... Oh good, so it's not just me
  3. You guys need to specify what you're speaking...I'm only getting bits and pieces...not much is looking like good ol' Fiorentino!
  4. Reno is supposedly the 'hub' of Basque culture in America, along with San Francisco. I will say that the Basque Cultural Center makes some mean grub.
  5. I read Mark Kurlansky's The Basque History of the World: The Story of a Nation, which I found interesting. Yes, it was highly pro-Basque, but it did help to explain why the Castilian/Spanish governments have never wished to relinquish control of them. Of course, the Basques claim to have discovered America well before even the Vikings, thanks to their cod and whaling expeditions. A quick and fun read, even if you have to work through the Euskara bias.
  6. We have an open field behind our house (technically it's part of the San Francisco Watershed, so it's protected land), and there are a ton of deer back there. Our older cat, Peanut, has chased off the deer a few times now...suddenly a 12 pound cat turns into a 250 pound tigress. It's funny to see. Now our younger cat, Bella, is trying to follow into Peanut's footsteps...but she's only chased off birds yet.
  7. The whole holiday thing is funny to me...but slightly annoying. It used to be that you had 'Christmas break' and 'Easter break' in school. Ok, 'Easter break' got changed to 'spring break' because it didn't hit at Easter...so that makes sense. Now 'Christmas break' is 'winter break'...and I guess it's ok...but it still sounds funny. 'Senior citizen' has been around as long as I have, so it doesn't bother me. Perhaps it's new to the rest of the English-speaking world?
  8. Funny, but I don't quite get the same 'aggressive' feeling with Minerva that I do Athena. Maybe it's the name; 'Minerva' sounds old fashioned and frumpy. (Oh crap...I hope I didn't piss her off too much...)
  9. As I've said a couple of times, my mom's family is from N.Italy, and polenta was definitely around...but late. The story goes that when my grandmother's parents came here 100 years ago (to the central coast of California), they couldn't afford to buy polenta, so my great-grandmother had to buy ma
  10. Here in California, land of Political Correctness, it makes me gag sometimes. And I grew up here...saw the tide change as a kid...and it still sucks. Some of the ones which come to my (still vacationing and very groggy) mind: People of color (um, I'm not exactly an albino, ya know...) Differently-abled Crap...I'll add more later. Need more rest first.
  11. I just got back last night from a week in Aruba. It's a great place...much like Hawaii in terms of atmosphere and activities, but because it's more of a desert-landscape than the lush tropical one that the Hawaiian Islands offer. Otherwise...wow. Just...wow. Anyway, the island of Aruba, like its sisters of Bonaire and Cura
  12. Grrrrrrrrrr, baby...very grrrrrrr!
  13. I've been in Aruba for the last week *sigh* And seriously...that was the most f'ed up yellow card ever...not even remotely a foul. Anyway, I was in a local/resort bar watching it, and the entire bar (which was 50/50 locals/tourists) was pissing and moaning about that call...and then we were all screaming for joy when T&T held off Sweden. There was a couple of rounds of rum drinks on the house...I think...I don't recall
  14. Was the owl the sign/bird of Minerva (as it was Athena)? So, would the temple 'requested' have to be for her?
  15. $14/gal is not expensive...even $14 for a 750ml is pretty good.
  16. If you like the Safety Dance...you'lll love The Burger Dance! Admit it...it's f'ing funny.
  17. And they were all California wines from the Napa Valley...Napa wines are notoriously pricey. Sonoma Valley wines, IMO, are just as good, but at half the cost. I've only had a glass of the Stags Leap one, and hot damn, that was mighty tasty. (I wasn't paying for it...so I was quite happy with one glass ) There was a big write-up in the San Francisco Chronicle's wine section this morning. Also...maybe it's just me, but I've never been big on French wines. Maybe growing up here in the shadows of the Valley, fed on Sonoma, Rioja, Barbero and wines from similar regions, I just never got into the French ones.
  18. I forgot we're born on the same date...I didn't know Elton John did that cover, either. Somehow, that's just not right.
  19. Oops...you'd think I'd pick up on that. Too much editing today, I guess
  20. Well, I'm honestly not 100% sure...but what is known is that the female counterpart to -tor is -trix, so any title of that variety would follow, I would imagine. Comes is marked with 'common' gender, so it would not change. As for vicarious, dux, consul, and praetorian prefect, they have me thrown. I'm assuming that if they all followed their declensions (hah!), it would be: vicarious~vicaria dux~ducta consul~consula (?--this is a IIIm, so I have no idea what that would be) prefect~prefecta? (also really unsure of this one)
