  1. You must have A/C on the brain...you need to have that looked at. Else you're turn into Mr. Freeze.
  2. I decided that, due to my relative endpoint in my dissertation process, I could afford time to work a part-time job in the department stores around here during the Holiday Rush...meaning I'd make meager wages, but quite a few hours, and would get the nice employee discount. Now, just as a background: I'm the daughter of a very successful salesman, and I can schmooze with the best. I know how to work a crowd, juggle stuff, and take care of business. I've done 'hotel front desk' types of jobs before, and I know how to play the customer service game. It's pretty fun, and quite easy. As a result, I've turned my academic life into one full of customer service techniques. Meaning: I have a commodity (knowledge), and customers (students), and my job is to give them as much of the commodity as I can in a manner that they want. Ok, so there are plenty of rules and regulations that go along with this, so it's not like I'm trying to get Madame to shell out $100 for a stupid sweater, but you get the drift. So in the past 2 weeks, I applied to the 4 main department stores in the local mall, and have gotten interviews with all 4. As soon as I get a 'better' job--'better' would be at a higher-end store--I cancel my positions at the other ones. Fun, no? Oh, and I get paid for training. So, for example, I have training starting for my #2 pick tomorrow, and I don't have an interview for the #1 pick until Thursday...so I'll get to go through a day of training, perhaps two, and potentially quit if I get a better job at the #1 pick. Hah! I love this!
  3. Quail is ok...not much meat, tho. I prefer Cornish Game Hens for the small poultry category. The Barley Poridge sounds fine, tho!
  4. Ugh...I hate turnips, period, and somehow this concept doesn't make it any better.
  5. Oops...didn't realize that it was the same article. Forgive me! And, from what many of you said in that thread, we're all in agreement...somewhat fanciful! My dad came up with another theory...that this archeologist is riding the Dan Brown/"Da Vinci Code" wave, and perhaps this is more of a work of historical fiction that many are trying to turn into reality. I tell ya, I could go with that easier than I can that somehow there is treasure still around, and that it's hidden in the desert of Judea!
  6. So, I'm reading the good ol' San Francisco Chronicle this morning, and I see this article: Ancient Jewish treasures in monastery, book says. Gold, silver vessels reportedly in West Bank cave Essentially, Mark Kingsley, a British archeologist, claims to have found part of, if not most, of the treasure from the Temple of Jerusalem which was taken back to Rome after Vespasian sacked the holy city. His premise is that the treasure was brought back to Rome; when Gaiseric, the Vandal king, came down to sack Rome, he took said treasure and hauled it off to the Temple of Carthage, and did not liquidate the gold and silver; somehow this treasure ended up back in (Byzantine) Roman hands, specifically Justinian. Justinian felt that those civilizations who held onto the treasure 'crumbled into disarray', and decided to bring it back to Judea. There are some questions as to how it got from Constantinople to some small desert monastery called Mar Theodosius, but it is there that, supposedly in 614 CE a monk hides the treasure in caves below or outside the monastery...and while the monastery was in disrepair and disuse for 1300 years, no one found it. Um. yeah. So many questions about this...not to mention that the article notes that the Israeli officials are of the opinion that the treasure never left Rome, and has been in the Papal coffers until now, where it was planted in the caves as a rouse. I found the notion that Gaiseric "wouldn't liquidate" the loot was balderdash...it's gold and silver, it's meltable...it would be gone, I'm sure of it. Not to mention that time gap of 1300 years where no one was at the monastery...actually, scratch that, it all sounds fishy. So...ye experts of history of that dark time...what say ye? EDIT: I can't seem to get the link to hyperlink right...ack...help?
  7. I'm not in your head, nor do I have the time or inclination to look up every convoluted word that you lot create. I have better things to do...like chase butterflies
  8. Eh, they make up half of the words...I'm sure of it.
  9. No, the Jankees suck in their own right...they need no help in the voodoo department.
  10. But this was rare, correct? I can somewhat recall that only the upper of the upper crust let the girls be educated with the boys...versus the boys were educated according to their family's means. I could be wrong in this.
  11. Glad to know all is safe...but a Fargo-style retribution seems to be in order.
  12. I intend... ...to make sure my committee toes the line ...to go to Austin in a couple of weeks to make sure the above gets done ...to apply for whatever full-time, tenure-track position comes my way that I can even remotely satisfy (and that is on the Left Coast) ...to get a job for the fall ...to get a part-time job for the holidays sot ath I can actually afford to live on my own again ...to win the lottery, and then WSOP Main Event ...to make sure that every building I go into has A/C ...to rule the world. Ok, maybe not all of those...but some of those will be accomplished.
  13. My Niners looked like crap...again. Yeah, San Diego's a good team and all, but we could have put up a fight after the first quarter. Or at least look like we tried. OTOH...LaDanian Tomlinson's on my fantasy football team
  14. Well, to temper Ramses' comment...I'm very happy for the Tigers. I'm glad they're out of the dregs of MLB. I'm a Giants fan, not an A's fan, but my family and I were happy that the A's got into the ALCS...but yikes, the Tigers were rolling. Congrats...I predict they'll be the the World Series champs!
  15. I wonder if modern culture isn't still a (partial) reflection of that time table. For example, the typical Mediterranean 'main meal' is in the middle of the day, and there is a lighter fare at twilight. I don't think one could argue against the immeasureable influence that electric light has had on the daily routine, but I think the nutritional habits, particularly away from the huge cities, have changed less. At least, that's my guess.
  16. I think it's Anno Domini Oops...it is. Bad typo on my part!
  17. Growing up here in the San Francisco area, Anchor Steam is a constant...but I didn't know they were into the history of brewing as well! All the more reason to continue purchasing their product!
  18. Before Christian Era (what was BC, or Before Christ) Christian Era (what was AD, or Anno Domani)
  19. First they built Strawhenge but realized the building material needed to be improved after a wolf walked by, sneezed and blew it over. LOL
  20. I agree. I'm not sure why we're celebrating the guy who "discovered" america (when he didn't discover it at all because there were already people living here) by getting LOST. Lol. He thought he was in india Quite simple: We all celebrate and become Irish on a day that "celebrates" a missionary who came to Ireland and whose deeds are more legend than fact. We all celebrate and become Mexican on a day that was a very minor battle, and isn't even Mexican Independence Day (that's Sept. 16th). So why not celebrate and become Italian on a day that "celebrates" when a Genovese, with Catalan ships and Spanish money, stumbled across the wrong islands?
  21. Hey now. On St. Patrick's Day, the world is Irish for the day. On Cinco de Mayo, the world is Mexican for the day. And on Columbus Day, the world is Italian for the day.
