  1. Bribery?! In academia!? Perish the thought!
  2. No kidding, one step at a time. Grad school is not for everybody; it takes much discipline, dedication, and sacrifice. Yes, it's worth it (for some) in the end, but don't be so firm in your plans. Take your time, enjoy your college years, and should the Fates align things so that you are meant to go to grad school, then so be it. But do not close yourself off to other possibilities in college! That's the great thing about even a half-way decent university (and Binghamton is better than that, definitively): there are numerous avenues to take in order to enrich yourself. Enjoy!
  3. P: Jacuzzi and sauna , light sleep. GO: (Only needed once a year at most. Are you trying to kill her?) Me: Jacuzzi/sauna/sleep is best, methinks. Esp. after walking all day in heels! P: 1.butter glazed baby asparagus GO: (Lots of oysters) Me: Definitively P's answer; I'm allergic to shellfish, and asparagus is an all-time fave P: 2.soup of lamb's kidneys GO: (Past' 'e fazoul) Me: gotta go Pasta e faggiole...not a 'innards' fan, save for bacon-type products (are they still considered from innards?) P: 3.sauted veal with light nochhi verde GO: (Wot's this?) Me: he means gnocchi...and I could do this. Even if my nonna ruined veal for me (she made it mushy...don't ask)...this could hit the spot. P: 4.profiteroles GO: (And sfogliatelles and cannoli.) Me: Yes, please P: 5.a selection of cheeses, celery hearts and oat biscuits. GO: (And lots of port wine and cigars.) Me: Don't know if the port/cigars would go...but I like the cheese/celery idea! P: Dry Martini, Pertimaxus, GO: (Perfect Patented!) Me: Amen P: A smokey Claret . Monbazillac. GO: (Yeah, sure.) Me: hey, don't be picky...might even go a nice Pinot Noir or Chianti (I'm into lighter reds right now...just in the mood, I guess) P: Retire. GO: (Why bother? Party. You're already smashed. Put it off to another day. Tell them you were in jail.) Me: If in good company, then I shall be with them. If alone (and that would be sad), then I shall retire. Sorta. Either way...there will be celebration appropriate to the number of job offers received. Gotta go through this again on Wednesday with Campus #2. Heels and all!
  4. Today I have been at a 4-year public university, having a second interview for an Assistant Professor position. I'm not tired; I'm not fatigued. I'm...wilted. Why, you ask? Well, let me tell you the schedule for the day. Note that I got **location censured to protect my chances** yesterday afternoon, and rested up well last night. 7:30am--picked up by the department chair 8:00am--meeting with dean--all talk by her, whilst I sat and nodded and listened 9:00am--meeting with selection committee, which is 5 professors 10:00am--walking tour of campus with the department chair 11:00am--coffee with department chair 12:00pm--lunch with 2 members of the department, one of which teaches the class that I'll be guest teaching 2:00pm--guest teach a course 4:00pm--research talk 5:30pm--dinner I'm not drained...but I'm brain dead. I'm not drained, but I'm showered, in my jammies, and in bed, relaxing. I'm ready to sleep in tomorrow (well, to 8am, anyway), and ready to get going for the next interview next week. On the other hand, I know how to finish my dissertation, and to get it in on-time. I know what to do now...well, I always knew what to do, but I now am even more focused than before. Let's hope there's at least one job offer from all of this!
  5. Coors Light...Bud Light...Natty Light...
  6. Some pazzo from under the Brooklyn Bridge.
  7. What about it figuratively meaning 'my child/son'? By that I mean: it's my understanding that Julius somewhat took young Brutus under his wing, and being that he new the family well, could refer to Brutus as 'my son' in informal circumstances. 'My child/son' implies an intimacy, true, but not necessarily a direct bloodline.
  8. Amen, brother...until beans are made to make you 'toot' less, and still be as inexpensive as they are, then this lack-of-flatulence ain't gonna happen. On that note...mmmmmmmm...burrito...*drool*
  9. You've previously stated that you were born in the good ol' US of A. Also...I'm hopped up on Pinot Noir...
  10. That seems highly unlikely, given that you are not born in the United Kingdom...
  11. Oh Christ Almighty...hang onto your hats, folks...
  12. I think that you're partially answering your own question. The same is true here in the States, that as kids we're taught that the Roman Empire fell in the 5th c. AD...and then we get to college and into our Western Civ. courses and are taught differently. I don't think that there is a question that there is both oversimplification and Euro-centric prejudices. On the one hand, you have to simplify things for the youngsters...try to make it less confusing. On the other hand, there shouldn't be a total neglect of the Byzantine/Eastern Empire at the high school level. I recall in college taking a course on 'Dark Age history', and questioning if it was 'Dark' in all areas of the world. My teaching assistant had the weirdest look on his face, and blurted out, "well, of course not. We're just meant to think that St. Peter's is the center of all that is interesting." A good point...and possibly the source of all of this focus. As a Romance linguist, the fall of Rome is a central figure...but that's because of the areas affected. Western Europe was in a state of flux and a bit of chaos, one could argue, for 500-1000 years afterwards. Perhaps more. And the language evolution bears this out, along with many other aspects of life. But by no means does it require us to forget about the other areas of the Mediterranean, let alone the rest of the world!
  13. I mentioned that earlier on here...married to a good bloke with a big villa...that way I could have some power, but not much. Basically, comfortable and able to do as I please! An empress would be too time consuming, and too dangerous. Too many people gunning for my position!
  14. What wrongdoing did you perform...er...what valiant act has earned you that reward, BlackAdder? And don't try to swindle him out of the crown...I don't think it'll work.

    Roman Bread

http://www.amb-cotedazur.com/Recipes%20aioli.htm le voila! This is the modern version , but its origin is classical. You forgot the best part...IT'S YUMMY!!!
  16. A little strong, but understandable, given the circumstances. All that talent at WR, and no one to throw the damn ball to them. Just a damn shame. No wonder Barry Sanders retired early.
  17. Dude, my Niners aren't gonna see the playoffs for a while yet...there's still a love of football that keeps me going. That was a helluva game on Sunday in Indy...and the one in Miami is gonna rock, too. So quit yer bitchin, boy!
  18. He still made his victories in the way of a lot of Roman blood. :mummy: Can't hear what you said. Is this the UNRV version of sticking your fingers in your ears and yelling out "NAH NAH NAH NAH NAH NAH NAH NAH"? Sheesh...grow up...Daaaaaa Bearssssss will sit Peyton on his loverly arse, will stuff whatever hope of an offense that the Colts can contrive...and then will run the ball down the Horsies' crappy line. JT and Cedric (Hook 'Em, baby!) will have a field day. End of story. See? If you're gonna taunt, do it like an adult. Trash talk!
  19. Daaaaaaaaaaaa Bearsssssssss (2 good RBs + Monster Defense = XLI Champs)

    Roman Bread

I used to make bread more often--more Italian 'peasant' style, but I will make a sourdough starter again in the next few months, once I get settled again. I love the activity, and the taste is unreal. Never have used a bread maker; always did it in the oven with a pizza stone. The day I make it, I always have a snack/meal of fresh bread, olive oil with balsamico and some sea salt and cracked pepper, all mixed together. That, and a good chianti or pinot noir, and I'm a very happy camper!
  21. Which is, perhaps, the single greatest public rant in sports history. I wish I had a copy of the whole thing! Gotta go check YouTube. EDIT: Two partials of that series of rants: one and
  22. That, dearie, is just truly painful. Viggen, that sucks that you've had a run of bad luck. But, things will look up, and life will be better. Silver lining, and all that. And, I'm sure, that GO will come over and help you redecorate...after all, he's already pledged grant/wine money to AD!
