  1. Sadly, I'm almost positive you're not talking about the citrus fruit *gag* Speaking of fruit, I know now that all over the Mediterranean (I'm mostly thinking of Spain) this still goes on, with either mulled wine or something like sangr
  2. It can cost about the same in college...it really depends on what your major is, where the books come from, etc. But there are always methods to get around the high cost of the bookstores. Most college bookstores list (in the store, and often online) the texts that are required for the course even a month or more before the start of the semester. All one has to do is get that list of what you need and do some comparative shopping. Half.com, Amazon, and local used bookstores are great sources. Just make sure that you get the same edition; oftentimes there are significant differences between editions, and one cannot substitute one for the other.
  3. The affinity for red hair surprises me. I was told by my maternal grandmother (and the rest of the Italian side of the family) that red hair was bad luck...it meant that the person was a witch! Oh how times have changed! Then again, if everyone you know has brown/black hair, and someone comes by with blonde or red...well, we all want to stand out!
  4. I'll second that motion...enjoy your day, Wot!
  5. So my love bacon, prosciutto, jamon serrano, and kosher dills is not only right and true, but it's keeping me healthy? YAY FOR BLT'S AND PROSCIUTTO WITH CANTALOUPE!!!
  6. I currently reside in a city with yellow street lights. Yes, yellow...the same color as the signal lights. It's beyond annoying. "In theory," yellow lights are meant for you to see the night sky better...however, I can't squat, either in the night sky nor the signal lights when I'm driving at night. *sigh* Another year missed!

    All done!

Out-friggin-standing! That sense of relieve is amazing, isn't it? It's even better when the final draft is done, and it's sent off to the publisher. I'm having a beer in your honor...after last night's "celebration" with Mom, I've had enough wine for now But congrats to you, Gayle!
  8. It really depends, but names are going to follow fads, powerful people, and family lines; Nephele can describe that. Remember that the history of Italy is full of not only Italic rulers, but various Gothic and French rulers, and this has an effect on the first names, to be sure. The Catholic church also has a hand in this; not just 'Cristina', but any saint names, pope names, cardinal names...they had the power!
  9. I wouldn't say that I *like* school...just that I have many, many questions, and wanted an avenue to learn how to answer them. Now that I have that, I can do what I want! (Or so I hope!) Thanks, Kosmo!
  10. No documentation, outside of words by yours truly. Otherwise, I wouldn't be able to utter the phrase "I can neither confirm nor deny the statement, Senator" :P
  11. I actually haven't had the nightmare about a course...but a 'feeling' that there was one piece of paper that I didn't sign. I guess that's what keeping me from having a blow-out celebration...but when I hear the 'all clear' signal, I'll be going along similar to what we've seen in the Imaginary Party!
  12. Hmmmmmmmm... I wonder if Ralla's has those new silk togas...my hunny would love one of those!
  13. Well, folks, the word of this week has been: culmination. I uploaded my finalized dissertation to UMI, which is the publisher that UT (and many, many other universities) uses, and it's currently under review. I mailed my final papers to the Grad School, and they were received today. All that's left is for them to finalize everything, bill me for my processing fee...and that's it. I woke up this morning, and i felt...calm. In my mind, when I pay that final fee, then I'll be really done, but essentially I'm done. Finished. Graduated. This fall is the first time since the age of 5 that I won't be a student at a school. For those that are counting, that's 27 years. In essence, this dissertation is the culmination of 8 years of PhD work at UT. In turn, the questions that I attempted to answer (and which, in reality, have only lead to a whole host of other questions) started in my 6 years of BA and MA work at UC Davis. So, really, the dissertation represents a culmination of 14 years of collegiate/post-secondary work. I feel...lighter...calmer...but not really any different. Am I supposed to? By the way...I'm not the only one who finished their PhD
  14. That is incredibly cool, Asclepiades! I have to send that (and the above-linked article) to a friend of mine, who studies Mexican literature and its connections with the Aztecs. Thanks!
  15. That sounds gypsies in London. That sounds like a Jughead convention! Monte Carlo? Vegas? Actually, I just found this site, which seems to be a true academic site and not a student project (I think). It might prove useful!
  16. If the book is like the shows, it'll be fine for high school kids...but I've been disappointed by the shows for some time now. I keep wanting there to be something more substantial! EDIT: After reading the review, it sounds like what I feared is true...or worse, as it sounds like the book doesn't even come up to the tv series!
  17. It is most often argued that it is indeed an 'alveolar tap/flap'...and since this continues in the Romance languages, it's probably true. If you touch your tongue against the back of your teeth, and then continue back, there's a 'bump' right behind your teeth; that's your alveolar ridge. It's a common articulation point in human languages. So the 'r' sound of the Romance languages is a 'tap', a quick hit, on that ridge. In American English, this sound is associated with the [t/d] sounds in 'butter, ladder', as used in fast speech.
  18. You mean of Brutus the Barbarian Baby Eater!
  19. Not just Italian, Maty, but most of the Romance languages have the same cognates for the days of the week. Portuguese is the only current language which doesn't follow the same pattern (segunda-feira 'second day' = Monday), but did at one point use the same pattern.
  20. As mentioned earlier, there are linguistic similarities, because they are both Indo-European languages. There are similarities of the same varieties across the older Indo-European sister languages. Certainly there are similarities across the cultures in some respects. But a *close* relationship? That's a bit of a stretch, by any imagination.
  21. Not only that, but some linguists have proposed 'migrations' in Indo-Europeans. According to one book (Matasović, Ranko. 2004. Gender in Indo-European. Heidelberg: Universit
  22. Summer Ale is fine...if you see it on sale, it's worth it. It was light and crisp, a wheat beer which went well with the empanadas that I made. Right now their Brown Ale (which rivals Newcastle) and the regular Boston Lager are my all-time favs. 1554 Black Ale? If I see it, I'll try it out...probably BevMo is a place to start. Thanks for the suggestion, Moon!
  23. My brother and I are now trying Fat Tire's summer selection: Skinny Dip. It's similar to regular Fat Tire, but I taste a lot of it on the front (not tip) of my tongue...definitely a light, crisp ale. The label says that "Cascade hops frolic with a splash of kaffir lime leaf creating a bright, citrusy palate that's as crisp as chilling in a mountain pond." I don't know about that, but as a 'light' beer goes, it's not bad. I prefer Sam Adams Light for light beer, personally...specifically because it doesn't taste 'light' or watered down. But this is a close second. Next up: Sam Adams Summer Ale (and, yes, I'm a Sam Adams fan!)
  24. A 'bridging' year is not normal, no. But GPA is not everything; it is coursework, letters of recommendation, GRE scores, and the specific program itself which can all be factors. If your non-Greek Classics GPA is as you say, you might be admitted into a Masters' program; this is particularly true if your letters are strong. So you need to focus on the relationships with your professors. Another piece of advice: most grad schools require a personal statement. There are usually places on campus which specialize in getting undergrads prepared for grad school, by setting up portfolios and dossiers. Open one up, and then get their advice on personal statements. Use your resources!
  25. I finally found one of myself as a wee lass! This was taken when my dad was in the middle of a photography class. I was 6ish. It's in the Gallery: click here
