  1. I'm not denying that...just saying that when George Lucas doesn't have complete control over everything from script to cut, the product is better. Empire and the Indiana Jones series are testament to that.
  2. Well, you could always do what my brother did, when we were kids: build the stuff that's on the picture...and then create your own city! Imagination...it's what makes the (Lego) World go 'round!
  3. It's an epidemic, if the word could be used, here in the US, too. And with the employment situation being such that there are fewer jobs going to those who don't have at least a high school education, there is a high probability that the problem will grow. The community colleges are doing what we can; I know at my district, enrollment is up in general, and specifically those who wish to complete their GED and get education in the trades. I believe this is true for most community colleges in the San Francisco Bay Area, but I don't know for sure. But even here, while our enrollment is rising, there are so many more who are not interested in education, or who don't believe they can go to community colleges. Hopefully this trend in growth continues...a new charter school opened in East Palo Alto (one of the worst cities/ghettos in the country) which teaches students from pre-kindergarten through high school, and guides them to our college, and hopefully to transfer to a university. At the very least, it gives kids who otherwise would end up on the streets a chance at a better life. There are other similar programs around the country, too; indeed, the company which runs this charter school has others in California (and, I want to say, elsewhere in the US, but I'm not positive), and they seem to succeed. As my dean has said many times, it's not education that is the key to success, but the belief and confidence that you can obtain that education, and the instruction on how to obtain it.
  4. Hey, why not. Of course, giving these folk an education in general might just keep them off the streets. Oh, sorry, I was being practical...wait, so was Boris? Really???
  5. Egyptian archaeologists have uncovered the "missing pyramid" of a pharaoh and a ceremonial procession road where high priests carried mummified remains of sacred bulls, Egypt's antiquities chief said Thursday. Zahi Hawass said the pyramid
  6. I'd say so. Although sometimes one person's vision is too much...aka George Lucas and Star Wars. I still say that the best one is Empire, and the new ones don't even cut mustard.
  7. *ahem* Congrats to the Wings...that was a helluva series. And what a finish!
  8. 71.67%...and I just took the State Dept.'s Foreign Service Officer exam, where I had to study a bunch of this stuff...and, of course, subsequently forgot some of it lol.
  9. I agree, and the death of Gene Roddenberry really kicked the life out of the franchise. He was the guiding force on TNG and had some involvement in DS9...but you could see the void that his passing left in the franchise.

    Damp Squib

Wow...a couple of light bulbs. How kind and sweet of them! How thoughtful! My, it's just what you needed! Couldn't they have kicked in a months-worth of electricity instead? lol
  11. For me, DS9 was passable, but never held my interest. Voyager...I'm sorry, but the captain of a starship cannot look like she's always going to cry. Enterprise I never did watch, just never wanted to.
  12. So, it's a sociology experiment which no one really cares about?
  13. Still, bad form to talk about TNG and have Scotty beam you up. Tsk tsk! (This is also conceding that you're prolly a bigger Trekkie than I am...I liked TNG immensely, but none of the other series.)
  14. Any document from Dacia in the common vernacular from about 150 CE to, well, the 16th century. I can't even describe how wonderful that would be for many of us researchers! I'd also love to have access to tons of grammars...not just the Appendix Probi, which is a later document, but as many as possible from all over the Roman Era. As much documentation of common vernacular as possible.
  15. Uh, not to point out the obvious...but O'Brien was the engineer in the transport room in TNG...not Scotty. Sheesh, what kind of trekkie are you???
  16. I can't even remember the last time I religiously watched an American SitCom. The closest I get is _Boston Legal_, but that's not a SitCom. Now, I can't seem to get enough of _That Mitchell and Webb Look_, and now BBC America is showing _Not Going Out_. I have only watched the pilot (the second show was on this week, but I needed to work on final exam grading), and it has potential. And I used to watch _Coupling_ regularly, until 'Jeff' left. Then the show kinda sucked.
  17. So since this is quite unusual, would this suggest that the warrior was a member of the elite? Say, was the son of a chieftain?
  18. SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!!!
  19. But could it be that Julius Caesar, knowing the family myth and learning from the life of Alexander the Great, turned this myth into something much bigger? I can't recall off the top of my head whether Alexander made that big a deal of it, but certainly Julius did. And if the family had long since fallen out of the Roman inner sanctum, and the myth hadn't been used much publically for several generations, then perhaps Julius would have thought to use it again?
  20. To all the Europeans who frequent the board and who occasionally read this blog, I ask for an explanation. What the bloody hell is all the fuss about Eurovision? First, there are countries in the contest that are not even part of Europe (Armenia? Azerbaijan? Georgia?). Now, I realize that there are many out there who would consider Europe and Asia as one continent, but even if we accept the fact that the word 'Europe' has a geographical connotation to it, much like the words 'Central America' or 'the Middle East', then even still these countries would not be part of what is called 'Europe'. Second, and perhaps more importantly, who the )(*^&)(* cares????? Seriously, this is a contest known for is beyond-weird costumes, stupidity, and boring songs which no one would make into international hits. For chrissakes, this damn contest spawned ABBA...need I say more? There is now a so-called political backlash because Russia won...and it was supposed to have quite a boring song. There are talks of 'Slavic/Balkan collusion' just to make it more interesting. To be perfectly honest, I heard a couple of the songs this year--by accident, as I was watching BBC News--and they couldn't be interesting if the songwriter's life was dependent upon it. Crappy pop (not even good pop!) with clich
  21. I put this here because I think I know where this thread will ultimately lead...but if the higher-ups feel it should be placed in a more 'academic' forum, then go for it. There is quite a bit of talk about Julius Caesar and his claims (whatever you may make of them) that he is the 'darling of Venus' and perhaps descended from him. Take it as propaganda, for surely many of the time did, too. I believe I read that he thought quite highly of Alexander the Great, both for his tactical prowess and his handling of his empire. Caldrail said the following in the 'Was Jesus Caesar?' thread: This got me to thinking...Alexander the Great had been lead to believe (by his mother, mostly) that he was the son of Zeus...did Julius Caesar pick up on that, too, and use it to his benefit? Do we know when the myth of his being of godly-blood came into existence? Would he have thought that, hey, if it worked for good ol' Alex, why not me?
  22. There are times I wish the academic world worked in the same way. Like, oh, now.
  23. The creepy thing about twisters is the sky. It turns a greenish-grey, and it's this eery feeling that something's not right. More than a bad t-storm, you know in your bones that you need some sort of shelter, and you need it quick! When I drove/moved home to SF, on my way out of Texas there was one such storm. I probably was 2 hours east of El Paso, and the sky was that same trippy color. I pulled over to a truck stop, and waited it out...thankfully, there wasn't anything that dropped down from the clouds. But you learn quick that when the conditions are right, you take precautions.
  24. Just to update, 70% contained, 4000 acres burnt. Could be much worse. Way to go, boys!
  25. Bah, I forgot to allow JavaScript on that page...silly me. But now that I can see them...wow!
