  1. While they are on soil that belongs to a modern state they don't know that and consider themselves a political entity that maybe does not want to be taken care of. Given the record of some of this states in annihilating tribesmen neglect has a positive meaning.
  2. An amazing game Turkey - Cehia. The cehs were playing good and leading 2-0 but the turkish players jumped on them and scored 3 times in the last 15 minutes. In the end game Turkey played with a field player as goalkeeper. What a game!
  3. In Romanian a very strong accuse of bad behavior it's "you don't have those 7 years from home" hinting at the preschool education as decisive. The family and the environment are the most important factors and this are hard to control by public policies in a society where everybody lives in anonymity. The school can do little but to keep them disciplined inside.
  4. The coach made a mistake, Mutu was not a good option for the penalty kick because of low morale, days before the tournament his grandmother died and he was sentenced to pay 12 million euros to Chelsea. Before he was changed he could hardly play at all. Chivu and Tamas had already fired good dangerous shots and they would not have missed the penalty. Goian, the tall player, has to 2 yellow cards and he will not play against Holland. The guys that made the mid-air collision are still under treatment and unsure.
  5. We had a minute of joy tonight but our lead was short lived. It was a nice game with a fair result. We have a good chance to qualify, but we must beat amazing Holland (or make a draw and hope for a draw in France-Italy). The dutch have nothing to fight for in the last game as they already had won the Death Group, but still the team that just gave to the finalists of the World Cup 7 (seven) goals are a force to be reckoned. I think both game were good, maybe the best games until now. Perhaps I'm subjective now..
  6. Croatians played well but they also had a lot of luck especially at the second goal. I felt sorry about the german player that got the red card just before the end because he changed things when he got in. Why was the croatian faking like that when the game was seconds from ending I don't know. The english ref and his colleague on the line really messed the Austria/Poland game but the final result was fair. If Austria starts scoring instead of wasting chances like that they could beat Germany (if Germany plays like tonight). I hope Romania wins against Italy, but a draw will be good enough for me. And I hope that Holland beats France.
  7. Beating hosts it's a Turkish specialty. In Euro 2000 they beat out the belgian hosts, in 2002 World Cup they took the bronze medal, after playing largely against weak teams including beating both co-hosts Japan and South Korea. In their qualifying group for this Euro Cup Turkey produced surprises when they made draws with Malta and Moldova.
  8. I liked "The Byzantines" by Guglielmo Cavallo. It's a collection of essays concerning various categories of people from poor to emperors.
  9. The US Constitution created three separate branches of government: the legislative, the executive, and the judicial. This concept is the foundation of the country's governing system. It is not only the right, but the duty of it each branch of government to critique and rein in the excesses of the other two. A resolution calling for the impeachment of the President is well within the rights and duties of the legislative branch of the USA. Whether it will receive the support of the rest of Congress is another matter. The legislative should not hold responsible the executive for executive decisions but for abuse of power. Faustus, the Iraqi goverment does not have to be a democracy or a rogue state (good or bad) it can be a dictatorship like before etc.
  10. In 2002 they had a great team. Now they are not that good, on the middle like you say and my guess it's Cehia will beat them, but it will be a game to see.
  11. It was a very nice game. Portugal plays great, efficient and spectacular, and they are qualified already. Clearly, one of my favorite teams.
  12. "An Iraq that's peaceful, united, stable, and secure, well integrated into the international community, and a full partner in the global war on terrorism." I understand why the US wants Iraq "a full partner in the global war on terrorism" but I don't think that will change much. What I don't understand it's why a "peaceful, united, stable, and secure, well integrated into the international community" Iraq should interest someone else other then Iraqis? While I see the goal of the US I fail to see their national interest in it.
  13. The legislative should keep it's hands away from the executive.
  14. Spain played very nice.
  15. What is the evidence that the monasteries promoted education in the classics? I did not say they did. The Iconoclastic movement reduced the power of the church and her role in education. This and the traditions of learning in the Greek world were the clergy never got a monopoly over learning made it possible that Constantinople had after 1000 (but maybe even before) some layman teaching classic philosophy with a leader that received subsidies from the emperor as a high ranking official. That was very different from the West were learning was always connected with the church. Byzantine bishops, metropolitans and patriarchs were usually well versed in classics. They comment classic writers, sometimes even in religious books and make their sermons using rhetoric. All educated Byzantines received lessons of both classics and religious matters. As was pointed above monasteries played a major role in classical studies in the West as proved by the examples above and others like Bobbio or St. Gall.
  16. I agree with you. France played nothing and this helped a lot our defensive. Holland vs. Italy was a different sport. Romania will still have to lock herself in the defensive in the next game against desperate Italians. It will be very difficult as the Italians will spare nothing to win. An even game with Italy and a dutch victory over France will give us a chance to qualify.
  17. I'm orthodox Christian by birth and agnostic by choice. Icons are still highly present in orthodox churches and they are still attributed supernatural powers and miracles. Iconoclasts bore a resemblance with the much later protestants especially Henri the VIII because emperors wanted the riches of the church and to curb it's power. They took some of her lands and gold and disbanded many monasteries especially because they thought monks were useless and many entered monasteries to escape drafting in the army. Miraculous icons and relics were made up to increase the stature of churches and monasteries and in the process new local saints were created. This I've seen how it's still done some years ago. Imperial power used a religious reason to curb the power of church and in that they succeeded. Until the end of Byzantium the church remained obedient to the emperors that could change the patriarch and other clergymen at will. This movement also led to an increase in classical study and non-clerical teaching.
  18. Not even the determined measures that I've seen as a kid taken to ensure school attendance worked. And when this kids came they created mayhem and were a danger for the other kids. Maybe special schools for them are an option. I believe this has less to do with the economy, but with their connections with others: parents, extended family, friends, neighbors etc.
  19. To do that they had to leave the safety of the Golden Horn and face a much larger fleet. Greek fire was not enough to win the day against such odds.
  20. I followed your advice and switched from Internet Explorer to Mozilla Firefox. The first thing I liked it's that the adware that got my IE does not bother me anymore. Automatically importing favorites and cookies from IE was nice as I did not have to do it manually and now I can see in the bookmarks folder the logos of sites instead of that of IE. Even better it's checking my spelling as I'm writing here (it says the word "adware" it's wrong, but I don't think it's "ad ware" like they suggest). This should be good news to everybody that has to read my posts Thank you for the tip Viggen! PS - for your name MF suggested wigged
  21. Could these areas be where people with dog breath were noted? Maybe they've seen how often people look like their dogs? Then you don't depict the humans but the dogs that they look like If various monstrous creatures were on the maps this is less strange then depicting nonexisting lands. Searching for an island in mid-Atlantic could easily kill a crew low on food and water. Maybe this maps had a hidden key, for the unknowing looker the map not only showed the way to wealth (this knowledge was highly prised) but also scaring creatures and unreal lands. Use the famous map of Piri Reis and you will be in a lot of trouble...
  22. For me the descriptions of this battle don't make much sense, be they ancient or modern. This flanking move of carthagian infantry can happen only if the roman frontline was shorter and if the romans had superior numbers it cannot be shorter. If the 2 frontlines bended they bended togheter. Regardless on what happened in the center the wings should have still face each it other. How could roman wings be outflanked by an enemy that was in front of them? Only if they moved behind the center but this could not happen because they have orders to fight the opposing wing and because once engaged at the front they could not slide towards the center.
  23. Odoacer confiscated 1/3 of the lands of romans to give to his mercenaries, killed and disbanded roman armed forces, abolished the right of romans to carry weapons, put to an end the western empire, named himself with the hated title of king, aroused the anger of the eastern emperor by the rebellion of his brothers and by the assasination of the legitimate (at least from an eastern view) Julius Nepos and of his eastern troops in Dalmatia and was the first arian to rule Italy, the seat of the catholic pope and the home of a catholic italian population in a land where only germans mercenaries were arians. Yes, I'm sure the italians loved him. Even wikipedia says so...
  24. The english go over the top with their team that usually it's not worth the excesive hype. The last time that they played something nice Maradona's hand-of-god interfered (oh, how I hated him for that! But his fall from grace made me realise what a brilliant player he was). Gary Lineker was a different breed from the likes of Beckham and Owen. He played the ball not the media. Liverpool and Everton of the early 80's..."Come on reds" still gives me a thrill. My feelings towards the italians (french and dutch also) are at a low point now. Anyway, I still like more Italy over France as I can not forget the World Cup that the french hosted ... Italians trashed the romanians some years ago in a very unpolite manner but I hope our team will show now some tactical brains for the first time in history instead of relying on natural gifts that seem to be absent today. Romania does better with the best South American teams while against europeans, even boring teams like Sweden in 1994 , they don't seem to know what to do with the ball.
