  2. Even though the library was still around in Christian times...Damn, a crappy soldier, an even worse politician, and now an exceedingly mediocre arsonist! The library could be burned down and still be around later. Rebuilding?

    One Handed

That's a huge bandage for a finger infection! Since last summer I have always problems with the nails of my fingers and toes. My wife believes that they are turning in claws... Get better!
  4. If I remember well there were some archaeological studies that highlight more continuity then destruction in Gaul and contradict Caesar's claims.
  5. The truth is that the soldiers had a nice ride. Much better then the Audi. PBW, lol, interesting concept. It makes sense what you say. Now women can achieve their other goals without much help from man so the fit and healthy soldiers look more interesting then before.
  6. For me the funniest line in Spartacus BS was when Spartacus shouted the order "keep the formation!" while there was obviously no formation.
  7. Major roman cities like Antioch and Alexandria had suffered a lot from earthquakes. The losses were high in many cases.
  8. And all above can happen at the same time! The worst part it's when they speak, it's like some kids playing a RPG, especially the romans are pompous and precious, declaiming like in a Shakespeare play. For balance the leading actor speaks and acts like a robot. The second episode has fluffers...
  9. At least I learned a new word (the name of a job that I had no idea exists) from this review
  10. There were far more wild areas like forests, swamps etc. For example Romania was heavily forested and the wildlife comprised animals that became extinct by the time of the modern age like aurochs, bison, wild horses, saiga antelopes, beavers etc In such a marginal area the ecological impact of the empire was minimal.
  11. Medieval infantry was designed for fighting against cavalry or at least dismounted man-at-war while their antiquity counterparts were designed to fight against other heavy infantry. Hellenistic warfare was developed from the head-on collisions usual for war in Classical Greece and cavalry, light infantry, missile troops etc were often just auxiliaries supporting the heavy infantry. The Leuctra maneuver described above was a form of echelon.
  12. The title of this topic brought to my mind the book of Stephan Zweig The False Nero but looking on-line I found no mention of an English edition of this nice novel. Zweig is among the best historical novelists I had ever read.
  13. I fully agree. If we see how quickly Scipio's campaign in Africa dismantled the carthaginian alliances we can understand why it was easy for Hannibal to believe that the same would happen to Rome. But even if Hannibal realized that Rome will resist he had no alternative but to try to defeat it anyway. As long as no one points to a realistic different, winning strategy I have to say that Hannibal made no mistake. Sometime one loses even if he does everything perfectly because there is a large disparity of resources that he can not match by talent. And even worse with Scipio the romans had evened the field regarding talent and experienced army.
  14. http://www.cracked.com/article/18372_the-9...opular-foods_p1 The scariest for me is the Whole Chicken in a Can.
  15. I don't think that Hannibal had any alternatives to what he did. When the war started he could wait in Spain for the romans to come, and giving the roman superiority in numbers the result was not in much doubt, or take the fight to the romans trying to gain allies, take away roman allies and destroy roman resources. His choice can not be faulted here. If he did not invaded Italy then celts, macedonians, Syracuse and Tarentum would have never fought the romans and the romans could have concentrated much more power against Carthage. His decision not to attack the walls of Rome was probably sound as it is obvious that roman forces still outnumbered him and in a siege he would have supply problems while being denied the opportunity to outmaneuver the romans on a battlefield. I believe that he was a brilliant general and if other Carthaginians would have behaved better the end result could have been different. His only error was starting a war and provoking a determined enemy while his own country was undecided.

    Going to Athens

Very nice! Lots of things to see and to do there beside eating gyros, souvlaki and drinking Metaxa. They say retsina it's how the ancient wine tasted maybe as an excuse for it's terrible ouzo/toothpaste like aftertaste. Maybe adding seawater will make it better... Have lots of fun!
  17. Happy Birthday and welcome to winter!
  18. Wow! I'm glad there are no zombie dogs here those freak me out! I'm half an hour in the simulation and all civilians are gone but one police is still fighting and as the zombies are dispersed now he might survive. Actually I should say she because I believe that she is Alice. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qufYSO-0WF0...feature=related I know, wrong movie, but I love Milla's song
  19. I am watching the 2005 season of Doctor Who. I am surprised because I always thought of it like a campy looking old movie but this is pretty cool. Before that it was Band of Brothers. I don't use a DVD player as I don't have a TV, I watch movies on my PC
  20. The games had an obvious pagan connection at a time when sports competition were not usual. Also the attention to the body that sports represent was not acceptable to christians as proven by the changes in art in the same period.
  21. As I said also in my blog I will visit London twice next year and if it will be possible I would love to come to this meeting. So I will look at this thread to see what you decide.
  22. There is a high probability that at some point the Universe will start contracting in the Big Crunch resulting a pile up until even the atoms are crushed. If not the only other possibility is that the Universe will expand for ever and all stars will use up their fuel and freeze. Looking out the window I wish global warming will occur faster...
