  1. Honestly, the magical papyri was a product of a multi-cultural, philosophically motivated segment of religion in Late Antiquity. I'm not sure how Roman I would really call it. The only thing that native Roman religion really has to commend to itself in the way of evil spirits are the Lemures, nasty spirits of the dead that were propitiated with bizarre rituals. But they are just nasty spirits of the dead and nothing more. "Demons and Angels" in the sense that the original poster is using are Christian constructs that are simply not useful in terms of Roman paganism. Christian constructs like good and evil or virtue and sin are not useful either. This was made clear to the original poster in a prior thread. That is why some of us are taking this thread less than seriously.
  2. I have no desire to convert to Islam, so I guess I can't be a slave. Damn.
  3. If I were Barry Cunliffe or Peter Heather I'd be crawling under a rock for participating in this fiasco.
  4. I like the pickle spikes. German military uniforms always had character.
  5. An American flying a British spitfire crashed in Ireland. He spent the next several months having soccer matches and drinking games with British and German prisoners of war. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-13924720
  6. Homo Sapiens are the only surviving human race because their brains were more dedicated to language and planning than their rivals: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-13874671
  7. CE is more ... politically correct .... for people who aren't Christians. I tend to use this myself in conversations on this forum. However, as Kosmo said, if you're writing a historical novel, it doesn't make sense to use CE as the characters would not think in such terms.
  8. Both have been dark for a lot longer than a year. Pertinax hasn't been seen since the death of his mother some time ago. Augusta just disappeared.
  9. It's kind of an arbitrary concept and therefore has an arbitrary end point. Marcus Aurelius is remembered as the last of the Good Emperors, and so the "Golden Age" of Rome is often said to end with him. But now matter how you slice it, it was over by the Crisis of the Third Century.
  10. A long-studied archaeological site in a mountainous region between Europe and Asia was occupied by early humans as long as 1.85 million years ago, much earlier than the previous estimate of 1.7 million years ago, researchers report in Tuesday's edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Early human Homo erectus is known to have occupied the site at Dmanisi later. Discovering stone tools and materials from a much earlier date raises the possibility that Homo erectus evolved in Eurasia and might have migrated back to Africa, the researchers said
  11. I finally bought Branagh's 4 hour version of Hamlet. Oh my gods, it was horrible. Kenneth plays Hamlet like he is on crack. I couldn't make it through the 1st disk.
  12. I thought it was France that most hated the Germans ... ... Anyway, wasn't there an article a while back that a lot of the "Celtic" tribes that had settled pre-Roman Britain were really Germanic?
  13. here is the BBC version: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-13781202
  14. The early French were Celts, so I am not really surprised they had a fondness for beer.
  15. A dictionary 90 years in the making. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-13715296

    Yep, a very interesting read.
  17. I find it interesting it was most popular in heavily Celtic/Germanic territories. I wouldn't be surprised if it had some kind of religious or occult significance, given the 12 major gods of the pantheon or the 12 signs of the zodiac. Perhaps they were used in Romano-Celtic temples, and "the decorative knobs" had some kind of iconography function.
  18. This could be great! I just hope they get some actors that are a match for the material.
  19. Yes, but I am interested in reviewing a legal product that UNRV can link to. I can't really do a review and have Viggen link to Napster files or whatever, I've given up on Amazon. I'll just wait for it to hit retail stores.
