  1. There seems to be some debate, but I hold with those who say that Romanization was never extremely strong in Britain to begin with outside of the southeast coast. After all, it took 3 legions to keep the place pacified, and few if any Britons made it to the Senatorial order. So perhaps what we're dealing with is a thin coating of Romanization that quickly wore off with the arrival of the Saxons, while Romanization on the Continent was much more embedded.
  2. http://www.dl.ket.org/latin2/things/option...ys2.htm#aprilis If you scroll down halfway, someone put a song together in Latin.
  3. Is Latin still taught in UK secondary schools as a matter of course?
  4. I seem to be the opposite: I can't get into fiction books unless they are very well-written. I have several books on the way (Reading List). I just got through the first few chapters of "Learn Ancient Greek" by Peter Jones. But having now mastered the alphabet, I don't see myself as having the time or inclination to progress. I'll stick to English and my very basic Latin. :-)
  5. Bwahahaah. I can tell you that, having worked in a call center, most people are there simply because they can't get a better job, and they care no more about the call than you do aside from getting their pay check . But I worked in an inbound call center; I didn't have the heart to make outbound calls and try to sell crap to someone when they were trying to relax at home.
  6. Salvete Omnes! We have a rash of new members lately. Welcome and feel free to jump into fora discussion. From history to archaeology to the Legions to modern cinema, we have discussions to appeal to every type. UNRV has become a special place where members can contribute to an ever growing collection of book reviews and articles: http://www.unrv.com/roman-books/glossary.php The literate among you may wish to help us out by reviewing a book or contributing an article on an item of interest. Help us grow and expand our resources, and see your name in print. And of course, such contributions are taken into consideration for promotions up the social ladder. Equestrians get access to free blog and picture gallery features. Patricians meet in a secret Senate forum, and are eligible for occasional free book giveaways. It's a great time to be part of UNRV. Won't you be an active member of this thriving community? Valete!
  7. I'm glad to see enthusiasm and ambition. I think it is a great idea, but I can't speak for the Triumviri on whether or not it is feasible.

    Agora

The two are not mutually exclusive in this context.

Hypatia was a female intellectual from Roman Egypt in late antiquity. She was murdered by Christian monks. Not sure how historic the movie will be, but it looks good. The shots of Alexandria are breath taking.

    Fires of Vesuvius

Has anyone read this book? It received good reviews on Amazon, and I am thinking of buying it.
  11. GJC, I suggest you pm forum administrator Moonlapse, who takes care of that sort of thing. Cheers.
  12. Thanks, GPM. It was a thought provoking book, even if I am not sure I agree with it.
  13. Hello, again, Formosus. Glad you stopped by! Over here I am just known as Ursus. At UNRV we don't require a full tria nomina .. although we certainly don't have anything against them either. Feel free to jump into the conversations. Vale!
  14. Salve, Formose. Be welcome here. For you incomining members who live in Europe, be advised the UK members have a meet every summer. They generally invite other Europeans as well. http://www.unrv.com/forum/index.php?showto...15&start=15
  15. Salve, Welcome, and I hope you become active here. :-0
  16. I love most of those :-) Here are some of my favorites: Moonlight Sonata (on classical guitar) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dl_t3xjxrrA...re=channel_page A Night on Bald Mountain http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2wYOOA9SV8...feature=related Prince Igor

  18. As I was driving to work today, I heard National Public Reporting reporting on this. It seems most of the buildings damaged in the quake were modern homes constructed in the last 30 years. 2000 year old Roman ruins, by contrast, faired much better. They don't make them like they used to, I guess.
  19. Blesssed did a wonderful job with the script he had .... but there is little trace of the historical Augustus in Grave's work.
  20. Howdy, SPQR. You'll find that perhaps the majority of people on the site, myself included, love the Late Republic through the early empire. So you're in good company. Good luck on basic training.
  21. Tk421, Why aren't you at your post? Tk421, do you copy?? Oh, you're surfing UNRV? Never mind. Carry on, Stormtrooper!
