Sounds like there is a lot of Roman-era stuff if the guilty party had to learn how to read Latin. I wonder what this will unfold once scholars sift through it. -

Now that President O has extended a gracious but perhaps naive olive branch to the Islamic world, I doub't you'll see any prosecutions of Bush. If every little thing that Bush and Cheney did was brought by a trial to the world press it would probably cause world outrage and in particular be a recruiting tool for Al-Qaeda. And so, Bush has been left to retire to his Texas ranch while history writes his condemnation. Meanwhile, Cheney doesn't seem to understand that former vice presidents are supposed to fade away. His big mouth is burying what's left of the Republican party at this point.

Interesting. I guess if I am ever forced to move to Texas for some ungodly reason, I'll go to Austin. Do they have good museums, libraries, art galleries, etc?

Well, I just came from the theatres. It is fun and watchable, if you turn your brain off for 2 hours and look over the super massive black(plot)holes.

Well, if it's from the same author as Roman Empire at Bay, I am not so sure. His prose is not what I would call conducive to page turning in the manner of Tom Holland or Philip Matyszak.

I am reading several things at once. Just got done with Taschen's "Gothic Art" overview. Loved it. (No, it's not that type of Gothic. Sorry, Nephele ...) Will be reading "Celtic Mythology" next. Have been reading "Fires of Vesuvius" by Mary Beard off and on for the past two weeks. An interesting and informative book - just a little more involved of a read than I care to entertain right now.

Hmmm. What about cultural events? Does anyone want to make the case Cicero is the greatest Roman ... not because of his politics, but because he molded the Latin Language, and his letters give us profound insight into Roman history at a critical stage? Or what about Virgil and Ovid, whose poems and literature inspired a later Europe and delight even today? Or what about the eastern emperor Justinian, whose codex of Roman law inspired European jurisprudence?

I agree he is underrated. In some ways he is a kind of critical link between the early and later empires.
