  1. So maybe it's worth half-off at the Saturday morning matinee? Hmmm. I'll consider it.
  2. Maybe general Roman history has been so well mined over the years there is now an emphasis on researching the more arcane topics. I've seen a lot of strange specialty books in the last 2 years or so - and most of them are expensive.
  3. .... this isn't exactly a stunning revelation, though? Maybe I am missing something but why is this news?
  4. Romans certainly revered their gods and saw their gods in every facet of creation. But if you're looking for deep personal faith, that seems largely alien to native Roman religion, and was reserved for the Graeco-Oriental cults that swept the empire (the Isiac cult described by Apuleius as being the best example).
  5. Lot's of books on religion in this batch.
  6. I would gladly have sold my classmates into slavery. I would only have gotten a nickel for them, though.
  7. The Romanization book looks interesting. Too bad I don't have the time.
  8. You know ... I'm a little worried, though. A god-like being let loose in a virtual world ... if they start echoing The Matrix I'll be disappointed.
  9. If nothing else, I like the soundtrack.
  10. I watched the first two episodes of the last season on a promotion CD. It's going down hill. Every season, minor characters from previous seasons disappear without in-story explanation, making their contributions meaningless. Meanwhile, new minor characters are introduced. The new minor characters of this season don't do anything for me. Some of the acting even seems a bit wooden. The major characters are also losing their luster. King Henry, the Duke of Suffolk, the Ambassador from the Holy Roman Empire - as they age I just don't feel like I care anymore. The King's youthful queen brings a certain playful sexuality to the series, but of course it won't be long before she is executed. I think the star of the show so far is the Princess Mary and how she is maturing. But in the sum of things ... meh.
  11. The Roman literati certainly followed the Greek tradition.
  12. Is anyone watching Caprica? It's a prequel to the modern Battlestar Galactica. However, more importantly it seems to be a bold social commentary on our times. A technologically advanced but morally ambiguous culture grappling with terrorists and zealots who assert an exclusive moral code .... great stuff.
  13. Yup. I've changed my mind. I might watch this on the half price Saturday morning matinee when it comes out. Perhaps it will be entertaining at the least.
  14. I guess they are only showing the first two episodes for free on the web. I might get the Season DVD when it comes out. It was entertaining if nothing else.
  15. You're missing an apostrophe and a period in the above sentence.
  16. No offense but I just can't get worked up over sledding and skiing and all that. Now if they had a Snowman Building event, that would be cool.
  17. Bwahahaha!! Sounds excellent. Too bad I'm too busy right now.
  18. Which is interesting, considering Pagan Rome was the Evil Empire of an earlier generation of Hollywood. Anyway, does anyone know when this movie will actually be released in North America?
  19. As Facebook wasn't exactly meant for prolonged, meaningful dialogue among strangers, I wouldn't hold your breath.
  20. Saw the 2nd episode as well. It's deliciously bad.
  21. I actually thought the style/effects were better here than in 300. But maybe it was just because there wasn't an armored battle rhinocerous charging at a phalanx.
  22. I thought this was neat. http://www.vocame.de/en/musik/
  23. http://www.fancast.com/tv/Spartacus%3A-Blo...-Serpent/videos It's a male fantasy, nothing more. Impossible action sequences, mindless gore, beautiful women having sex left and right. But at least it didn't bore me. Much better than the USA channel's godawful remake of Spartacus a few years ago. As long as I can see it for free on Fancast, I'll watch it.
