The special status that some women's cults had in Roman religion - Vesta's virgins, Bona Dea's cult, the Isiac cult (though it accepted men as well) - is indeed interesting. I'm not sure what more could be said about it that hasn't already been said. However, I could see someone taking all of what has been said and putting it in one book for convenience. Roman Women touched on some of these topics if you're interested.

Yes, I don't know if I will bother with a second season. Its only bright point so far has been a rather attractive alien princess.

I agree completely with that, but that's never going to happen in American public school education. The locals, whether Christian conservatives or liberal secularists, are always going to indoctrinate children into their world view. -

... and if I remember my American history correctly, plebians didn't have much say in American government until the time of Andrew Jackson. There were property qualifications and such that keep the early elections confined to a fairly narrow electorate. -
What did you think? I was expecting something grand, but it seemed rushed and thin in places.

The Romans had felt the Hellenistic Greeks had become debased, but admired certain aspects of classical Greeks, especially Spartan military valor. I believe the red cloak of the Roman soldier may have been modeled on the Spartan red cloak, but I don't have the time to confirm it with a source. I am sure the resident military buffs can be of more help.

While the Spartans had a peculiar system dedicated to perpetual military preparedness, warrior arete was nonetheless held in high esteem by all Greeks.

Don't get "Augustus" by Everitt. It's nothing special, and in fact the opening is an infamous prologue where Everitt imagines Livia giving Augustus poison figs with his silent consent.

Cute video. Great taste in music. Interesting to learn that Minerva Medica was assosicated with this spa complex - Minerva was also assimilated with the Celtic Sulis in the healing spa complex of Bath, england.

It's currently selling for $54 on Amazon.com: DVD pre-order That's a little steep for my blood. I might have to wait a few years and get it when it's in the bargain bin.
