  1. From what I have read the Egyptians were mainly concerned with navigating up and down the Nile. Being something of an insular race they seemed reluctant to travel too far from their homeland and its religious rites for the dead.
  2. The Greeks lathered themselves with Olive Oil, then scraped it off with some kind of instrument. I don't remember ever reading what the Romans did.
  3. They must have fought for the Republican forces against Octavian. It's well established in The Odyssey that Cyclops thumb their noses at too much authority.
  4. According to Michael Grant, the Etruscans were the recipients of Near Eastern style influences from Phoenician traders. Having no great artistic tradition of their own, the Etruscans went through an "Orientalizing" phase in art around the 7th century BCE.
  5. The Egyptians built pyramids using the crudest of methods, the Greeks made advances in science that were unparalleled till the end of the Enlightenment, and the Romans built aqueducts and roads that are still in use today. Stupid is not a word I'd use to describe them.
  6. Whenever you posted a link it would automatically enable the link. It doesn't seem to be doing that now. http://www.unrv.com
  7. It doesn't seem to be making automatic URLs out of http links.

  10. From Mary Beard's review of the book:
  11. Oh, if you convert to a more plant based, non-processed diet you not only spend far less on food, but you'll find its healthier and less fattening than the typical modern Western diet. I've been watching what I eat for a while now, although the above example is a bit too extreme (and unappetizing) for me. (Wheat Thins are OK, but not exactly something to live on).
  12. I think it's a nice idea, Viggen.
  13. I hate torrent anyway. Ok, I pre-ordered "Spartacus." There will be a review when in Autumn it finally ships.
  14. And on an encouraging note, on Amazon it went down from$50+ to just over $40. Excellent. Very tempting.

Ok, so I ordered "Why we are all Romans" along with "De Bello Lemures." Will try to review both before the summer is out.
  17. Thanks for that! I'm not sure I agree with this theory .... people would take the time to scratch marks in wood and stone just to give the illusion they could read?
  18. Yes ... but were they sensible shoes?
  19. And during the Bush years it was "Theocratic Oil Barren silver-spoon Warmonger Dictator." Just the usual discourse. Neither side is necessarilly wrong, of course.
  20. Hmmm .... a fiction book I might actually read.

Personally, I think it should be taught in high school, at least to the "smart" kids who are most likely to cherish its appeal to heritage. However, economically I can understand why any struggling institution of higher education would have it first on its chopping block.
