    The review is up, if you want to read it. I don't know how you define "detailed," but it did give a summary on the archaeological findings of town and country life, as well as military forts and defensive structures.

    I just read "Roman Gaul and Germany" which is 20 years old, but a very interesting look at two provinces!

    Europeans sometimes use the term "corn" as a generic for what Americans call grain. A lot of older European scholars use it in that sense. Corn specifically they tend to refer to as "maize."

    This is sad. Maybe they should get EU funding to help preserve some of those sites. After all, it's Europe's legacy, not just Italy's.

    We were just complaining elsewhere that English language scholarship doesn't focus on the provinces enough. Ha. And, oh, does it seem like there is a new book on Pompeii every month?

    I just got Roman Passions. Not what I expected at all. I thought it was going to be an easy read on Roman vices, but it's actually a scholarly thesis. Still looks interesting, nonetheless.

    I think that sort of broad, liberal arts education should be conducted at the secondary level, in fact allowing tertiary education to be more specialized. From what I understand this is what most industrialized countries outside the US do in practice, already. If American high schools were more focused on that sort of cultural and intellectual heritage -rather than sports and marching bands and "social awareness" training - we could make this entire argument irrelevant. My two cents.

    Abortion was totally legal in Rome until the later stages in history. There were a variety of plant based products a woman could take orally or vaginally to provoke an abortion.

    Aside from Roman Britain, I don't think English language scholarship really pays much attention to any province, does it?
